But doesn't the government know more about supply and demand than the silly pharmaceutical companies?

In this case it's the DEA. I doubt anyone here will argue if you want to defund them.

I've tried that. It's OK for short periods of time, but is way, way more unpredictable and thus unreliable. While working at Starbucks, I tried just drinking the coffee. I'd either be so wired that I wouldn't sleep at night 12 hours later, or I'd run out of focus halfway through my shift.

A specialist in ADD meds told me that coffee has a million factors, like the kind of beans, how long they were roasted, and the exact amount that was in that particular cup of coffee.

The good news is that the shortage seems to vary from state to state. No problems getting it here in NC, at least when I last had insurance in September.

I have ADD, I use the same concept to describe what it is like to try and focus on a task. I can push myself towards it, but the slightest distraction and my focus slips off the topic like your magnets.

It's so freaking weird especially when its something I WANT to do but can't keep the focus.

So, while in general I like to say fark you DEA, in this case I really mean it because they are keeping me from something that has really helped me.

Might I also add a "Fark you US healthcare system." As posted above, my insurance ran out in September, and I haven't been able to afford the stupid-high price of Adderall without it.

I have ADD, I can't tell you how thankful i am I didnt get druged. Im of the opinion that ADD isn't a disorder, its an alternative way of thinking. I can't focus on 1 thing at a time, but i can multi-task a "normal person" in circles. I have also noticed I tend to be a better critical thinker than "normal people." You know what's wrong with kids today? Nothing. They are naturally fine. No, wait. That can't be right. Oh! Yeah! I almost forgot. Drugs. Drugs are the problem with kids today. They aren't taking enough of them. They need to take more hard drugs. Psychoactive drugs. And the sooner the better. Billy needs that speed by age two. Just ask a doctor. And maybe some LSD just for fun. Look at him stare into the puppy's eyes like that. I think he thinks he's found God. We got any more of those free pens around here?

1 in 10 are ADHA according to the article.

That is over diagnosis, which the article seems to admit given the concerns about college students being prescribed the drug. If people at a college student age are being misdiagnosed than it reasons that younger people are also being misdiagnosed.

Thanks for not blaming us pharmacists.

Where we run into problems is with insurance companies. Some are still only paying us $87 when the drug cost us $200, which is not a good way to stay in business. I didn't stock generic Ritalin for the last 4 months because the only generic I could get cost me $60/100 for 10mg and insurance companies only were paying $15/100. I was finally able to get our old manufacture's back in on Friday @ $7/100.

Not really. College students are intentionally lying about their symptoms in order to get drugs they don't truly need so that they can study better/stay up later. I've had college-age people ask to buy Adderall from me on many occasions. Kids and their parents don't have that much motivation.

Also, a certain percentage of ADD kids tend to "grow out" of it as their brains develop. But definitely not all of them.

Me too, and I'm really good in chaotic situations. Anyway I figure we are the way we are for a reason and instead of looking at it as a disorder(unless it's really debilitating and prevents a person from functioning at all) maybe we could try to benefit from the talents of ADD folks instead of drugging them into submission.

Seriously, I've never understood the point of drugging people with all these alleged "Disorders" to make them think the same way as everyone else. I've been diagnosed with a couple myself and ignored it. I know how my mind works, the fact that it's different from how most people think (most likely) isn't a big deal to me. In any case it sounds like all that most of these drugs do for anyone is turn them into a zombie, although I'm sure there's plenty of legitimate applications for more extreme cases.

My pharmacist is absolutely great. He called me when the price jump came over the wire, to see if I had a script I needed to fill.

When I got there, he pulled up the prices on his terminal, and showed me what Sams pays now, what they paid last month, as well as the markup. He showed me quite clearly that they raised the price less than the jump percentage, and were now making 30% less per pill.

I didn't give them any grief at all, and he also said that he thought that something "fishy" was going on.

I used Adderal from '98-'00. The first day I took it, I remember driving home and saying, "....OF COURSE! OF COURSE!" It was amazing. After a couple of years, I decided to stop when (a) I took an easier career and didn't need the extreme focus and (b) I was a little freaked out by side effects.

Let me tell you as a Disc Golfer...When I was on that stuff, I could REALLY FEEL the plastic of the Golf Disc on my fingertips as I released it. Footwork felt crisp and under control. Now and before? Not nearly so. I usually lose focus between the pullback of the Disc and release, and on every third or fourth drive, I release early and it careens off course to the left by a large margin with too little spin. Footwork is sometimes clumsy. I usually end up on my tippy-toes without realizing it, robbing my drives of power.

As a kid and now I was never athletic, but had a great arm (for baseball in those days). That tippy-toe problem drove my coach nuts when I was at bat. He swore he was going to put a board at my height in the batting cage that required me to stay down...

/the Gerald Laird of my high school conference...threw out 15/29 base stealers my senior year, batted .190

Artificial shortage caused by the DEA and pharm companies being in bed together. Results in skyrocketing prices and obscene profits for the pharms.

And I'm on the "Don't drug kids into zombies" side despite being ADHD myself. I hated every moment I was on that damn stuff even more than being scatterbrained. I lost my creativity. I lost what little social grace I had. I lost my appetite. And my scalp crawled.

2012-01-01 11:14:17 AM
There are truly kids with ADHD. But it is likely that there is a bit of over-diagnosis going on nation wide. Consider: if a kid acts up in school and it's a minor behavioral problem that can be fixed with a change in parenting or other habits, nobody is making any money. If we can get that kid to a doctor and diagnose him with something that requires drugs, the doctors get regular visits, the drug companies get a regular flow of prescriptions, insurance companies stay employed keeping tabs on the visits, the prescriptions, doling out payments, tracking deductibles, etc. Those kids are gold mines!
