Oh good. Now all we need is the San Andreas Fault to give way and we'll have the most miserable opening to a new year ever.

We'll at least I'm not in the process of going over there for this one. That was interesting the first few days.

Nothing too bad seems to have happened this time?

Came for this:
The epicenter is the point onthe earth's surface directly above the focus of the quake. It can't be miles beneath the seabed.

FTA "and its epicenter was about 370 kilometers (230 miles) below the sea, the Meterological Agency said."

Really. I didn't know the sea was 1,214.440 ft deep in that area. the more you know.

I've often wondered what the units are supposed to be for the Richter scale. It's logarithmic, of course, so maybe they measure the number of pants crapped?

6.8 quake.
Or as they call it in Japan, "Saturday morning children's programming".

WxGuy1: Haven't 7.0 earthquakes in and near Japan been pretty commonplace in the past year?

After the Big One, most of them were in the 5 to 6 range and they tapered off and basically stopped around July. Not many after that (Chiba/Tokyo area)

This will be my third year in a row going out there for work....I remember seeing the Mr. Donut, I just recall exactly where.. is it on blue street?
Our command has gotten better about providing lodging for us poor DoD civilians, so I don't think anyone has to stay on base this year..(which is nice since you don't lose any of your per diem..)

Below the sea, so a couple hundred miles into the earth's crust. Epicenters usually aren't really at surface level. The more you know. (new window)

Now a friend in NZ has checked in. They've started shaking as well.

The Earth's crust is nowhere near 230 miles thick anywhere. It's 3 to 5 miles thick for ocean crust and, at most, 20 to 30 miles thick for the continental crust. Subducting crust can reach great depths, but 230 miles down would be in the mantle.

For those of you in Japan, two things:

1.) I'm glad nothing bad happened this quake.

2.) I saw the Downtown: Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende! batsu special, and it was wonderful.

/Now to wait 4 months for subtitles
