Careful, that is what got Penn State into trouble.

At 6'1"/186cm and 180 pounds/81.6 kilos, I'm not fat at all, but I still would prefer seats wider than just 18 inches. I don't like feeling like I'm squeezed in where there's not much room to move around.

That will also help with the embarrassing shots of the track during the race where a lot of the seats are empty.

Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports, says the widening comes in response to fans' suggestions
now if NASCAR would take a clue from the boys at Dover Speedway and dump the stupid chase, they might get most of their traditional fans back.
Oh and apply the same stringent technical rules to jizzy Johnson as they did when they drove Carl Long out for being a minuscule bit over engine size rules at the end of a race.

Good to see a company actually listening to their customers

I've had several instances while sitting at MIS with a bunch of fatties. Their excuse was that someone was in the wrong seat and that's why it was so packed in that row.

I remember one online journalist calling out Las Vegas Motor Speedway (I think) when they tried, many years ago, to reduce their seat size "from 18 inches to an 'industry-standard' 16 inches wide."
He did bring up a good point, though; in addition to NASCAR fans not always being the leanest of people, a lot of us will have a scanner or something similar clipped to our belt, usually on the side. Add to that that most men will lean forward with their legs spread instead of close together, and all of a sudden, 22 inches seems a bit more practical for comfort over a five-hour period.
Of course, this summer, my friends and I pretty much had a row to ourselves at NHMS. But when every seat was packed, I remember my family of four trying to fit into three and a half seats because the owner of Seat 17 in South N was about 300 pounds and needed about half of our Seat 18, too.

NASCAR fans aren't fat, they are just big boned.

If it wasn't for NASCARs declining attendance...DIS would have never made this move

At least at Dover you get an individual seat. The seats at Indy are just long metal benches with numbers painted on the front. There's nothing holding some fat ass, or some inconsiderate jerk with a cooler from taking up more room than he's allotted. Fortunately Tony George helped fix this problem by alienating thousands of fans. Now you usually have room to stretch out and have a picnic.
