They aren't big on book learnin'.

Its probably a gay bookstore, too. LOL

So let's all read about it on the internet..

They only sell bartenders guides.

Isn't most of the population seasonal, anyway?

I looked around Key West on google maps street view, kind of looks like shiat, too many trees. Houses are too close together.

Though it does look like I can get rich selling chain link fencing down there.

Key West used to be a place where people could live cheaply and get away from society. Now it's a tourist trap and you have to be filthy rich to own property there. I like it, it's a fun town, but it's nothing like the place it was when those literary types chose to live there. Good place to drink though.

2011-12-31 02:08:40 PM
The question is, do they stock the important books, like Atlas Shrugged?

Winning: Houses are too close together.

I'm guessing you don't live in Queens.

If only there was some way those poor islanders could order books from a fairly well known website and have them delivered right to their door....

But how are they on Buggy Whip stores? Is 8-Track World still open?!?

2011-12-31 03:03:53 PM
The immediate area around Harvard University? Only three bookstores remain that I know of, and one of them just sells the textbooks to students. No one's forcing people to read their stuff on their Kindles.

May be too far from anyplace but Havana. ba dum bum
But that is entirely too bad, parts if not all of a city need bookstores to live.

2011-12-31 03:05:14 PM
Jim Henson lived there?

2011-12-31 03:05:42 PM
Judy Blume?

Are you there God, it's me Margaret....and I'm FABULOUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Its THE Spring Break destination for white midwesterners.... Had the time of my life there as a college senior, though the luster sorta wore off when i revisited as a working adult. Its sort of a pit.

There's a gym in the rear so it's practically a slap palace.

Used to go there years ago. Visited a bar that had a resident Sharpei ... can't remember the name of the joint or the dog.

Good times ...

I learned about nocturnal emissions before I was old enough to have them. Adult sexuality sounded very weird.

I know, how sad that people have adopted new technologies and cheaper ways of buying books. It's not like it is happening all over the country or anything. But of course to some idiots, no bookstores automatically means dumb and uneducated.

I was down in Key West for my brother's wedding a few weeks ago. Protip: Don't drive there. The Florida Turnpike is a single lane the whole way down. Really frustrating to say the least.

Anyhow, the population is either people that were born during WW1,prostitutes, or tourists. It's pretty obvious why bookstores aren't very popular: The people love their fishing, but books reading on a beautiful day is dumb to them.

Also, great night life. I'm not even old enough to drink and they still let me in.

2011-12-31 03:25:53 PM
People go to Key West to drink and get laid. Reading? Pfft.

My brother lives in KW. Been to visit a couple of times. It's a different place, no worse than most, better than some, quirkier than San Francisco in some ways, nice weather and the bugs are not too bad for Florida. I've always flown in so have no idea what it's like getting their by road.

I have a good time there, and I don't drink. If you DO drink, there's plenty of fun places to indulge..on every block it seem like.

Truth, when I was there two years ago there was an 1,800 sq ft house with zero yard that was completely falling apart that they were asking $5.4M for, basically you were paying $80M an acre for the land and you would have to rehab the house to whatever it looked like 60 years ago because it was a historic district.

"Bargain Books is open daily 7 a.m. until 8 a.m. until its planned closure next week, and is offering deep discounts on remaining inventory. "

Hmmm...

And that's by no means mutually exclusive either.

Really, mentioning Ernest Hemingway (not even in the top 50 of his generation) but not mentioning the greatest Key West writer, Carl Hiaasen?

Yes, because '$100 gadget you need to buy before you can start buying e-books at price points that are now comparable to the paper product' is so much cheaper.

And let's just ignore all the people who can afford a $7 used book but can't afford a $100 Kindle. They don't count, right? They can just look over some Kindle user's shoulder.

You can write, illustrate, edit and publish an e-book in a studio apartment in some podunk small city anywhere in the farking world. And offer it for sale to billions without hardly any overhead or initial investment.

Fark maintaining a life-style. Knock the stuff out and pile the money in the bank.

The whole island is only about 6 square miles. How many book stores do you need in such a small area?

Now I regret getting my nook! I wasn't aware that you could buy and sell used e-books. (The licensed ones.)

//I never thought of Lolita as a travelogue. Interesting.

And let's just ignore all the people who can afford a $7 used book but can't afford a $100 Kindle.

...and after you buy 14 of those $7 used books, you've spent enough to buy a Kindle, which gives you access to thousands of free books from places like Gutenberg.org - not to mention a whole lot of $3 books from Amazon.

Key West has a lot of the same party vibe as New Orelans.

Well, it's like New Orleans if they were to replace the crack town that surrounds the French Quarter tourist areas with beaches.

I keep my books in the library. I keep the book I'm reading in my bedroom, car, or wherever.

Electronic books I can download online?

America doesn't need more bookstore jobs anyway.

Convenience > jobs....unless its my job being lost.
