The White House believes GOP lawmakers boxed themselves in during the pre-Christmas debate on the tax break and will be hard-pressed to back off their own assertions that it should continue through the end of 2012.

Yep. It was amusing to see them hoist by their own petard.

Why not? The GOPers shoot down everything that he supports, not because they necessarily disagree with it, but solely because Obama supports it. F*ck 'em.

I don't know how many of you remember this, but back just before the 2010 elections, Obama stood before the GOP House members on live TV and chided them for painting themselves into a corner.

He told them that it was a foolish thing to paint him as some sort of cartoon villain sort, because eventually they were going to 'have' to work with him on national issues.

They didn't listen, naturally. Now, two years later, he's stopped trying to work with them and is simply leapfrogging over them to get at the American people directly. Which, I think, he should have done in the first place, but he's a Constitutional traditionalist and tried to work within the system first.

Now, they're caught by their own words and actions. The Establishment GOP has to get the Teaderper GOP to work with Obama or go full-tilt crazy and try and oppose things like TAX CUTS.

Personally, I think 2012 will be the lulz-filled year yet. Thank you, Mr. President.

I think it all went according to plan.

He gave that speech knowing full well the republicans were tethered by the Tea Party and could never be seen to work with him. The speech was given so he could have an I Told You So moment going into the election year.

Or to put it another way:

Everything that has transpired on the Hill has done so according to my design. Your friends, out there in conservative talk radio, are walking into a trap, as is your Tea Party Caucus.

It was I who allowed Donald Trump to claim he knows the location of my real birth certificate. It is quite safe from your pitiful little band. An entire legion of my best troops awaits him in Kenya!

Oh, I'm afraid my false presidency will be quite operational when your friends arrive in 2012...

Infernalist: I don't know how many of you remember this, but back just before the 2010 elections, Obama stood before the GOP House members on live TV and chided them for painting themselves into a corner.

The Republicans didn't control the House in 2010. If he was on TV chiding the few who were left after 2006 and 2008, he was wasting his breath.

Ultimately, the problem with getting things through the Congress lies in the Democratically-controlled Senate. There, Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell continue to treat him like a back-bench Senator from a blue state. When the Senate returns next month, they'll pass the House's year-long extension of the payroll tax cuts (which they passed as the Senate recessed for the year). It'll then be up to the President whether he signs it before the two-month fix expires. IOW, expect things to get interesting around Valentine's Day. The media focus, once again, will be on the House, seeing if the orange guy can get enough Democrats to cross the aisle, and override the veto. If that happens, lame duck commences, regardless of the election's outcome in November. The Senate will pass the year-long extension probably 85-15.

If Obama is re-elected in November, he faces another big choice -- whether to figure out what to do with all the tax cuts since 2001 expiring. But it's not an issue of his re-election, anymore. If he loses, income tax rates revert to 2000 levels, and the payroll tax cuts expire one year from today. No ifs, ands, or buts. Lots of Democrats hoping to be re-elected in 2014 start packing up their officies.

did you forget what happened right after his inauguration? Hint: "I won"

Or how, shortly after, the "Constitutional traditionalist" (LOL!) slammed the GOP, blaming them for the problems (despite the fact that the Dems controlled the House for the previous two years?

He didn't have Congress during the first 3 years so nothing's really changed.

/even when the Dems were the majority, there was enough pushback from the blue dogs and the politically craven members of the party to allow him to count on them for any kind of real support. Now that he's veered right he's getting pushback from the progressive members of his party (in addition to the default GOP intransigence)

"While Americans want Washington to focus on creating jobs and cutting spending, the President will have to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation." - John Boehner's spokesman referring to the White House's refusal to defend DOMA (links to Fox News, so it's extra truthy)
