Facebook has become as big and powerful as a country, so it's natural that it would need a constitution

Here's what constitutes Facebook: douchebaggery, dimwitterry,, and rabid ghey farkery.. So as far as countries go, it's kind of like Greece.

As hard as I try, I can't seem to quit Facebook. It seems almost universally accepted and no more or less evil than Google+; and as Tom even admits, FB is protected from a lot of user generated garbage like Myspace. Google+ seems to be cold and soulless to me. If I quit Facebook, I am committing myself to ignoring the lives of people I am loosely affiliated with and for some reason that seems wrong.

If its users had any say in what happened to them, then yes i suspect it would.

I really only use it to keep in touch with old friends via the instant messaging. Other than that I dont give a crap about who got knocked up at 22 and ruined their lives or how much you love your "cat, boyfriend, girlfriend"

Yeah, the users would have to buy-out the company before any real 'constitution' could be made.
Now, if Facebook was run by a non-profit, then maybe.

lol, this! A billion people have signed up and never returned. It will be an uphill battle dethroning FB. They're best hope is somehow coupling with FB like Twitter and hoping that FB makes some really bad mistakes (again).

You have to click the 'Continue Reading' link. I don't suggest it, so here is where the author was going with this:
"Within a year, Zuckerberg had a seat at the table with government leaders. In May 2011, he attended the G-8 Summit, the annual meeting of key heads of state (named after the eight advanced economies-France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, and Russia). The media reported that world leaders from German Chancellor Angela Merkel to French President Nicolas Sarkozy were more in awe of Zuckerberg than he was of them."
You're welcome.

I know we'll never see this in our lifetimes, but why can't successful organizations be owned by a large number of individuals?
Example: One or more douchebags dreams up an idea like Facebook, then after some basic framework they sell shares to people/users. Only one share allowed per person. Then everyone can vote on how that organization grows or fails. There could be some basic rules on how to introduce ideas, and so many people have to approve of an idea before it is voted on.
Hell, they won't even let our vote count towards the election of a president.

There are a lot of tiny countries that have virtually no political power or military strength. A lot of small island nations come to mind in the South Pacific that have no military (and rely on the US or Australia for protection), very little economy, and a tiny population.
Facebook has so much money flowing through it (through ad revenues and micropurchases in apps/games) that it has a higher GDP than these countries, by a good stretch.
Facebook played a major role in the Arab Spring uprisings as it was used to coordinate protests. That's more ability to influence foreign affairs than these island microstates.
If Facebook lobbies in the Congress, it will have more pull than a diplomat from one of these tiny islands.
Facebook is nowhere near as powerful as 1st world nation-state, but it's easily got greater economic, social, and political pull than a good number of weak nations.

the usa presidential electoral process is a sham perpetuating the myth and spectacle which keeps the poor and tired risking life to come skateboard on our streets of gold.
on youtube is a vid showing who is the largest customers of FB data, and where their leaders each used to work. scary stuff indeed, with major creep factor.

Facebook Commandment: Thou shalt not tag me in photos I am not in.
2nd: Thou shalt not friend request unless you actually know me.
3rd: Reposting something will not cure cancer, feed the homeless, make Palin president, or make thou rich. Stop it.
4th: Thou is not going to win an Ipad. Stop it.
5th: Anything link labeled "Thou must see this (spider-bite/fathercatchingdughteronwebcam/obamaadmitssecretmuslim") is virusey spam. Stop it.
6th: Just because thou loveth Jesus does not mean you need to tell it 10 times a day.
7th: Thou favorite sports team sucks, so shutup about it. (I break this one.. let he who is without sin cast the first pitch)
8th: Thou should not brag about illegal activities, especially your pot use and underage drinking, idiots.
9th: Just because thou got a ticket, all cops are not "worthless, power-hungry-pigs." Pay thou fine and quit breaking the law asshole.
10th: Thou shalt not send game requests unless it's to the people who actually play the damn games.

If Google+ would have allowed a simple chronological order based on the posts rather than the comments, I would have stopped using Facebook and gone with them. That is really the -only- thing stopping me from using it.

Facebook is dumb, and since signing up is purely voluntary and unnecessary, They can make their terms whatever they want.

It's the almost universal adoption that makes FB so influential. So it's not really FB that is the big deal here... it's large numbers of people voluntarily agreeing on a particular medium to communicate.
So the question is, what's next in social media evolution?
As noted up-thread, FB has become a political and social mover & shaker including fomenting revolution. (No small thing) What new innovation will inherit this role and how much more influential will that role become?
More importantly, what will be the consequences of this next step in global community?

There's only one company that can withhold the urge to develop craptastic features after they hit bigtime. And that's Google.
Every other company starts piling on features, most of which are useless, throwing in random tidbits of code, and changing the UI every 2 months.
There's a 15 minute learning curve when I log into Facebook once a month because they've revamped the UI.

Facebook could never be a government for two reasons; 1) Facebook actually caters to it's members rather than actively oppress them (ok, debatable), 2) Facebook actually makes money, no government could conceivably do that.
