So, they had X new customers and .5X existing customers leave. That doesn't prove much unless we know how many new customers they normally get and how many existing customers usually leave. If they normally get X and lose .25X, it's significant. If they normally get 2X, and lose .5X then it's significant.

Basically, if they normally get more and/or lose less, then it's significant.

2011-12-31 10:34:34 AM
People were going to do that anyway. The boycott didn't get any press, so it was only the Internet that knew about it. They lost their value domains like Wikipedia, and it accomplished the goal of getting them to change their mind officially about SOPA.

Yeah, GD did a shameless about face, and pulled out all the PR stops about it because things were going great for them. What BS.

After they totally and completely gave into the demands of those moving their domains away from Go Daddy, they stopped losing domains?

This is shocking.

How about you look at the numbers before they totally and completely gave in? You know, back when they were still personally calling all their customers and begging them to stay.

2011-12-31 03:56:29 PM
Weren't there reports that GoDaddy was intentionally slowing down domain transfers? Would those losses have been included in their stats if they weren't transitioned over yet?

Who knows how many tried. Transferring domains from godaddy is a pain in the ass. I don't know anything about a boycott. I've just been moving my domains as they expire, because I'm tired of the constant upselling every time I log on and the fact that they jump on a clients domain days after it expired and now want a thousand dollars for it. Also, I'm tired of explaining to clients why the add-on they bought while registering a domain is worthless and will just cost them more money if I utilize it.

Wouldn't be surprised if they just said they stopped supporting it.

How can big internet corporations support this shiat?

noit: Who knows how many tried. Transferring domains from godaddy is a pain in the ass.

I'm still waiting for confirmation from GoDaddy for transferring my domain (started it last night, I'm guessing the holiday weekend had something to do with the delay).

I wonder how many of the transfers are 'pending' still.

2011-12-31 09:11:09 PM
so FTFA, the boycott stopped working only when they stopped boycotting it, because GoDaddy wisely relented. What the fark is the issue exactly?

2011-12-31 09:11:17 PM
I believe they are only counting domains pointed at the godaddy nameservers. Many more domains are pointed at their own servers.

I personally know a few large domain holders that transferred their entire portfolio of 1k-5k domains. Just like 20 or 30 people like that would be more than the numbers they are reporting. And they wouldnt be counted because their nameservers would be pointed at their own servers.

I could be wrong. But i think its a lot higher

2011-12-31 09:25:39 PM
Looks guys, no matter how many domains you buy from GoDaddy, you're no closer to having sex with any of their GoDaddy girls. It just doesn't work that way.

Your welcome

SOPA was the final straw for me. There are plenty of other reasons (see also, seclists.org) to go, but this was what I needed to finally get off my ass and switch. SOPA and PIPA are still the equivalent of hunting mosquitoes with Tsar Bomba.

I was already disengaging from GoDaddy anyway (I didn't renew hosting with them, and moved that hosted site to my own VPS elsewhere), but it's nice to have everything moved.

I transferred my domains to hover.com with only one minor snag: I have one .cc domain, and Hover's process for transferring .cc domains is not automated. For a .cc domain, you'll need to open a ticket and give them your authorization code - then they'll initiate the transfer.

My other domains went without a hitch. Make sure to log into your old GoDaddy account, go to your Transfers tab, and manually accept the transfers.

I'm definitely liking Hover's lack of sneaky bullshiat. Their control panel is straightforward with no nonsense, and they don't charge extra for private registrations.

Silly Subby, GoDaddy already reversed its stance on SOPA. I think the boycott worked before it happened (despite it being an utter "failure"). While the organization may have been lacking, it became very obvious to GoDaddy that they can't just go around spewing off at the mouth.

MightyPez: Weren't there reports that GoDaddy was intentionally slowing down domain transfers? Would those losses have been included in their stats if they weren't transitioned over yet?

They are. On mine they unilaterally reversed the removal of the lock so when the transfer hit it couldn't be completed.

Then there was getting their friends at Domains by Proxy to recognize when I cancelled their service.

So far I only have 1/3 of my domains transferred, but they all have requests in process.

2012-01-01 03:48:55 PM
Of course they did. That is why they were so quick to change their stance on SOPA.

/facepalm

GAT_00: and it accomplished the goal of getting them to change their mind officially about SOPA.

No, it didn't. It got them to say "Oh, yeah, we'll think about taking another look at that". They never officially changed their stance with Congress. It was all lip service for damage control. In fact, their lead council is still on record in her official capacity as being 100% for SOPA. She's still writing blog posts for the company extolling the virtues of that rancid piece of legislation.

Ah, but they wouldn't have even said they're reversing it if the boycott didn't have some impact.

As for the figures, the "transfer your domain day" was a cool idea, but it was kinda late; it was nearly a week after the news of GoDaddy's stance broke. I, for one, was moving my domain the next day.

Pelvic Splanchnic Ganglion: They never officially changed their stance with Congress. It was all lip service for damage control.

Actually, Congress released an updated list of supporters, and they're not on it. Neither are Nintendo or SCEA, oddly enough.

HeartBurnKid: Ah, but they wouldn't have even said they're reversing it if the boycott didn't have some impact.

lolololololololololololololol

They'll say anything they damn well please to make you believe whatever the hell they want. They're sociopaths. Wanting to shut people up is not the same as losing business. They know the internet has an attention span of 5 minutes.

Besides Godaddies bread and butter is hosting and up selling. That has nothing to do with domain names at all.

This is not hurting their bottom line. They want SOPA to pass so they get to steal domains from people and make money off them by putting up advertising instead. They would rape their own children if they think it would help their cause. Of course they'll say they "caved to reddit". That will make reddit instantly say "WE WON!" and promptly forget about it completely.
