Kenya #2

I would think that the birth place of our president would be number 1.

With France increasingly seen by former French colonies as an imperial power and a country full of racial tensions, American society provides a model of success on the Ivory Coast.

FTFA: Still, an America-loving country could be a nation that has absorbed American values into its cultural fabric -- kind of like friendly old Canada (but don't tell them that, it ticks them off).

It doesn't tick us off. We're well aware of the influence of US culture in Canada. It's not like we don't know that when we're watching American Idol. But riddle me this, Americans: When you watch that James Cameron blockbuster or Lorne Michaels' Saturday Night Live or any of the other innumerable influential Canadians littered throughout the entertainment industry, does it ever occur to you that you're actually being dosed regularly with Canadian culture?

Nah, we care about as much as the English language does about adding a foreign word.

You forgot Shatner, for which we are grateful. James Cameron is Canadian? So is Celine Dion and she sang that farking Titanic song. The world makes a little more sense now, thank you.

Oh and you can take back Mike Myers now, we're full.

Meh, I'm vaguely aware of it when I watch Firefly or Kids in the Hall reruns or True Blood or anything with Ryan Reynolds in it. But there's little difference between Canadian & American culture outside of Quebec.

Exactly. But my point is that its a shared culture, not a borrowed one.

Most Canadians think Americans are arrogant aresholes but smile and act polite for their tourist dollars. Keep 'em comin' dudes, there's another Newfoundland Screetchin' in starting in about 10 minutes.

unyon: Exactly. But my point is that its a shared culture, not a borrowed one.

Furthering this, I don't think it's as practical to differentiate these cultures based upon nationality as it would be to differ based upon region/business and climate. The culture in Calgary is comparable to Denver; Toronto isn't as dissimilar to New York as some would boast, and Montreal is not entirely foreign from Chicago, just with better food and a more permissive attitude towards good wine and tits.

In each instance, these cities have less in common with cities in their own nations than they do cross-border.

I thought the Albanians really liked the U.S.

I remember back when Bush made a trip there or something, and there was a ton of people that came out in support of Bush and the U.S. in general, as opposed to the places that were all burny-smashy.

If I've learned anything from Fark -- and I haven't -- it's that both North and South America are filled to bursting with Americans. It's sad that the Old World hates an entire hemisphere filled with fun people.

I only notice Canadianness if they suck. Alan Thicke, canadian. Tom Green, canadian. Lorne Michaels ... that guy who produced SNL for all these years.

Wouldn't want to live there (Hawaii excluded), but I enjoy visiting...

I've been to a lot more places in the US than I have been in Canada.

1. 51% approval is hardly "America loving."

2. How is Ireland not on that list? They love us there.

3. Of course Kenyans love us. Our President is Kenyan.

4. Americans couldn't find most of those places on a map.

People in developing countries think that the US is a magical utopia where nothing goes wrong and everyone lives on rainbows. I got this a lot when I visited India. People constantly wanted to talk about where I was from or what it was like.

Although everyone has misconceptions. Biggest shock in india: Dumb people. In engineering you only work with people that have PhDs or MS so after a while you just start to assume everyone is smart. I met one guy that argued India was larger in land mass than the US. Then got completely confused about his local geography. (Akin to someone in Michigan not being able to place Ohio on a map).

As someone who travels abroad for his job, I can assure you the vast majority of people you come across will not be hostile towards you just because you are American. This is a fabrication a lot of people have led us to believe. Most of them realize the difference between government policies and people. You also have to keep in mind many cultures are naturally xenophobic as well.

I am also surprised South Korea is not on this list. The South Koreans have a very good view of America from my experiences in that country.

2011-12-31 11:56:13 AM
I also notice that my Cana-Dar goes off the minute someone starts trying to call my attention to anything Canadian. What? That giant robot arm on our space shuttle was built in Canada? Get out! I didn't even notice the LARGE CANADIAN FLAG on it all those years either. Figured that was just the USA letting Canada buy promotional ad space, like a NASCAR sponsor would.

2011-12-31 11:57:00 AM
We should count The South as a separate country. it would be #1 on the list.

the south really loves MERICUH

(even though we kicked the crap out of them and burned all their shiat down when they tried to leave.)

SNL sucks so your point is moot. the biggest message SNL sends is 'sure are a lot of jewish comedians in NYC'.

talent that fled canada in search of entertainment career in america, has successful hollywood thing going on and becomes usa citizen, yes they deliver the canada culture in buckets.(?) actors read other peoples writing in the manner dictated to them, regardless of their place of origin.

- seriously, DaVinci's Inquest from canada damn fine TV program. loved 'corner gas' when that was broadcast here too, v funny show.

That's ok... because the shows like Due South and Red Green balance it out.

/ never did understand the love affair between Red Green and Iowa
// but a total lack of culture in both does explain a lot

So I was visiting Calgary recently and the hotel TV had 6 or 7 Canadian channels, I know right, who knew. Anyway, after about 5 or 10 minutes of those I concluded that all your talented actors must be working down in Hollywood because they sure as heck weren't on Canadian TV.

List did not include the Philippines therfore the list is bullhockey.

Also, Guyana (the Jim Jones one), where politicians have been known to campaign on the basis that they'd seek US statehood for their country.

Lazily written article is lazy.

Having actually studied Canadian History at a US College (um, what Canadians call a "university"), I was always taken by how much Canadians were upset at US Cultural influence when so much of that "US Culture" was being actively fostered and promoted by Canadians

I watch the national news and its Peter Jennings

Bonanza, Battlestar Gallactica (original) and there's Lorne Greene (the Voice of Canada during WW II)

Two consecutive NBA MVPs for Steve Nash

TJ Hooker, Captain Kirk, some guy named Shatner from Montreal.

Tim Hortons, Couche-Tard (Circle K), mmmm Canadian Bacon

Oh, and Ellen Page....

Question is not whether the US takes over Canada, when does Canada take over the US?
