I can't help but think, maybe for a few years, we should try to reduce or eliminate the fishing we do in the oceans... you know, let nature balance itself out. Sure, we'll have a shortage on seafood for a couple of years, but I'm thinking it would be better than running out at some point in the (possibly near) future.

There is a real question here; Fishing is a capital-intensive business / industry/ livelihood. The boat work is the most dangerous profession in the world. Like Farming though, there are a relatively small number of hard-working salt-of-the-earth types that we think of and a much larger percent of the industry is dominated by large companies for the simple reason that they can afford both the financing and the losses that might wipe out a smaller player.

The issue is that we want small individuals to have some kind of social privilege over any group of persons who are using more sophisticated techniques. We want small, independent direct producers to have the ability to pursue a trade - and thereby support their villages and hometowns. But we don't want 'strangers' to be able to swoop in to the carefully managed fisheries and take all the 'surplus' fish needed. But the market dictates that EXACTLY THIS THING WILL HAPPEN.

It feels like a situations where the farmers in an area are at maximum production, but after their harvest, some noob comes along and STEALS their seed for next year. Next year comes and they have less to plant - they still have to pay their property taxes, they still have to weed and sew and reap but they will never be able to produce as well because they had less to start with.

Interestingly there are no skrimps in Maine waters, the skrimps are all located in Southern waters.

Also interesting how the fishermen's organizations are both pooh poohing the catch limits and calling for restrictions on entry (getting a license) based on history as a shrimper.

Would they be so keen on restricting entry if it were done at random which is really the only fair way to do it?

Nope, didn't think so.

"I'm just astounded that with the economic conditions we have in this state and this country that we're giving up those jobs and giving up those paychecks,'' Norton said. "It doesn't make any sense to me.''

Well Norton, I'm just astounded that you are so stupid.

If you don't put limits on the amounts, then you wont have a job AT ALL because you will have over-fished and depleted the supply.

This needs to occur everywhere..we are over-fishing the oceans. Time to chill out and eat some veggies once in a while.

Some people did a study or something, and said we'd be out of ocean-based seafood sources by 2048.

FWIW.

You can also do farm-raised fish, but I'm sure that brings up a whole different crop of environmental concerns.

Whatever.

So how does one get some of these shrimp if you don't live in the north east? Our grocery stores here don't stock such things.

I won't eat gulf shrimp until they figure out exactly what corexit and all the oil is doing to the seafood. I won't eat anything out of the Pacific until they start testing all of it for radiation. Kinda miss eating seafood.

/Yes there is a radiation problem in the Pacific even if the FDA & USDA declared it a non issue in March. Skipjack tuna out of the Pacific are showing up contaminated and there have been patches of water found to be significantly contaminated. That crap didn't dilute.

Maybe you should stop eating and breathing entirely as they are simply too risky for you? Just an idea...
