"Damn right. The holster too.
"You see that's tax deductible, you can write that off."

Is Shawshank the most referenced movie on Fark?
Hell, is it the most referenced anything on Fark?
Not complaining. Just pissed because I never get to the thread in time to make the first Shawshank reference.

Part of the problem is that you aren't a TFer. We have access to and can comment on threads before they become active.

I renewed my PTIN online a couple of months ago. I wondered what kinds of controls were in place to screen out those who shouldn't get one. This article answers my question.
I must give them credit, though, for checking on this after the fact. A lot of government agencies wouldn't even bother to do that.

That's how it works. When you apply for or renew a PTIN, you are signing up to have your background and credentials checked. Since the vast majority of PTIN applicants are fine, the number gets issued as soon as a processable application is submitted. If you turn out to be shady, your number gets revoked and returns you prepare are treated accordingly.
All in all, it's a non-story, or at least a cyclical one. A certain subset of the prison population never actually stops trying to commit tax fraud from behind bars, just like the 861 crowd, the '40 acres and a mule' crowd, or the families that believe that Puerto Rico was stolen from them never stop trying.

Prisoner registration as tax preparers is a new twist in a long history of tax scams involving inmates.
I'm shocked.

IRS, Taxes, Ass-Rape, Prison. It's a natural collaboration as they have so many mutual areas of interest and experience.

Because giving a convicted felon all of the information needed to steal all your money AND your identity is a great idea?
