How about them cookies?

One of the cruxes of my philosophy of teaching that had to be actually written down for that pesky Secondary Ed degree was the importance of teaching young folks to decrypt communication, and its purpose. While skills in English and writing are vital, part of that skill set is to understand how the language can be used to manipulate and to understand the purpose of such communications. Understanding meaning and motive, especially in areas of mass media is a necessary part to the skill set for folks in this age.

That folks don't like it when you parse their messages, or examine their motives, that is sort of telling. Be that on either side of the aisle. We need to educate our young folks to be savvy about how language is used, not just by themselves, but how others use language as well. It isn't a liberal or conservative sort of issue, but one that is vital to our democracy and for our republic.

If you keep getting caught in lies, and more damned lies, it might behoove you to simply stop lying and spinning, and let facts vindicate your position. Or you can attack the messenger that deconstructs the lies and paint them as an enemy. The latter is usually a lot easier though...

When I taught HS English, I did a lesson on journalism. Just the basics--headline, byline, 5 W's, etc. I also included a section on muckraking & yellow journalism. Beck has had a hard on for the Girl Scouts ever since he picked up that nasty case of syphilis back in 1990. You would have thought murdering her would be enough but, Cheese Whiz, nobody's ever satisfied.

So I read about half that page and skimmed the rest. It was hard, but when it was mentioned that there are other fact checking sites they could have referenced, I was really curious to see what would be suggested. Turns out, it was nothing. There was absolutely no suggestion for a place to check facts, just that you shouldn't check facts at Media Matters. It's almost like fox news doesn't want people checking facts. How very odd.

Now Media Matters, is in fact, a rather liberal site. I'm looking around in there, and they do seem to be mostly attacking fox, or the "right-win" which doesn't win them a whole lot of points in my book. It however, fits into the really uncomfortable spot I find myself in often with politics.

I don't like either party. I think they're all corrupt jack-holes up at the top. The republicans, however, I find to be generally more offensive jack-holes. The Dems at least claim to be for some of the things I'm for and slightly less crazypants. I don't really like them, but it's hard to not say I prefer them of the two.

2011-12-31 11:17:33 AM
I could have fun playing this one of two ways. I could call the Foxbot that they're just as guilty for having bought the thin mints for years, supporting a leftist agenda, or that they're picking on kids, who are our sacred future.

Sometimes they make it so easy to fark with them.

Recently I've been trolling an old conservative by calling him a commie every time he goes into a rant about how China has the right idea for executing people outright without trial. It's fairly easy to reply, "You old commie! That might be how things work in red China, but it's not how we do things in America. If you like the way they do things so much, why don't you move there to be with your pinko friends?"

The Girl Scouts teaches everything conservative women hold dear. Home economics, obedience to established norms, cooking skills, and strong moral virtue. Sorry that we're offended when a program we thought was teaching the right things to our daughters turns around and tries to inject venemous partisan lies from Soros in its teachings. Note that this isn't a problem with the local chapters; ours is run by the wife of the local preacher and she makes sure that they spend plenty of time learning the ways of the lord with him. No, this is a problem with the national chapter with the east coast liberals trying to ram their offensive and antiamerican screeds down our throat.

Just because you don't like facts doesn't mean the facts are biased.

2011-12-31 11:32:38 AM
Let's step back a moment and as a thought experiment accept the premise that the girl scouts are secretly a hyperliberal cabal. (We're accepting this premise to analyze the response.)

Now lets look at the odds that screaming "The girl scouts are a tool of the far left! RUN TO THE HILLS!" is going to improve the situation.......

Let's see odds that you come off as a raving loon are very high, odds that you come off as sensible and reasonable are very low.

So that being said, even if they were a super secret hyperliberal cabal, foaming at the mouth about it would provide the exact opposite reaction you were looking for.

Thanks Far Right, for once again catering to your insanity wing. (Who already 'know' the girl scouts are out to destroy their way off life, so you didn't need to tell them anyway)

The Girl Scouts are my drug dealers. Every year, I horde money so I can buy boxes and boxes of samoas to feed my boyfriend and I's habit. It's awful. We hide them, we tell people we don't have any, it's shameful.

*sob*

FTFY: Perhaps the Girl Scouts staffers were too busy to respond to us, but considering the fact that the Media Matters reference is, in itself, a form of misinformation, bias -- potentially even indoctrination -- we assumed that the book would no longer be on the market. But we were wrong.

Oh, hate to self reply, but had to add this gem:

CHRIS WALLACE (GUEST HOST): The Girl Scouts say they will no longer recommend the liberal website Media Matters as a good source for fact checking suspected media bias. The Scouts book "MEdia" includes a section called "Consider the Source" devoted to news and urban legends. Quote, "Media Matters for America gets the world out about media misinformation." But industry blog Mediaite says Media Matters has a, quote, "far left bent that is both transparent and indisputable." [Fox News, Special Report, 12/29/11]

So conservative blogs are reliable, but a left-leaning news site isn't?

I was a Girl Scout counselor for a summer (and a member til the Silver Award, meaning I quit in middle school but got the second-highest award you can) so I'm getting a kick out of this thread.

And I'm getting a kick out of this comment, because our camp was run by two lesbians who were married in England and who met at the camp.
