Sad, but stupid. How could the person driving the car that girls was in let a 12 year old run out onto the freeway? If it was her parent or guardian, that person should be in jail.

I remember an incident with some drug-addled Vietnamese kid who tried to jump from the car he was riding in into a friend's car on the Garden Grove freeway. He missed, of course. It wasn't pretty. They let us through the one open lane car by car, and I remember seeing a bloody shoe in the middle of the road, and numerous yellow tarps spread over the bits and pieces of the guy that they had not collected yet. Awful.
What kind of adult lets a child run out into a busy freeway...for ANY reason? It's hard to imagine the driver who hit her ever getting over that. What a horrible feeling it must of been, knowing there was no way to stop.

in group therapy was a lady who was directly behind a NYC yellow cab w/ passenger hi as a kite. guy in cab just got up and out like they were at a red light but they were doing 70.
the lady was freaked from seeing the guy bounce off her car. he was dead in seconds, run over by several cars before anyone had a clue.

Regarding letting a child run onto the freeway, it is possible the adult(s) who were in the car had gotten out to retrieve the clothing and told the kid(s) to stay in the car. Kid decided she wanted to help and jumped out.

John Sullivan was driving about 70 mph when he saw the girl, but it was too late to avoid the collision. The 74-year-old wasn't injured or arrested.
Yeah, the fact that he's 74 and has the reflexes of a grapefruit has no bearing on this. None.
CSB: My father-in-law is 78, and still drives. The man's an absolute menace on the road, blind in one eye, and is averaging 2 minor accidents a year. His last two were backing into other vehicles parked in his driveway. He gets in his truck and backs up without looking behind him. It's f*cking insane, and his family refuses to acknowledge that there's a problem. It's only a matter of time before someone dies at his hands.

Nope, it doesn't. I'm as critical of elderly drivers as they come, but in this situation, I don't think it matters who the driver was. That girl was not coming out of this alive. I truly feel sorry for the poor old guy. Whatever time he has left, he's going to be thinking that he killed a little girl.

I'm not sure. I don't Fark enough to track this. I guess I find the new Fark tagline mostly at fault. This story is worthy for submission in order to mock the parents; as shame does a society good.
So let me express a more cogent argument: Whoever greenlit the Fark tagline, 'Real news. Real funny', is an effin' retard.

Considering this happened at 11pm at night (from TFA), and a 12 year old girl isn't something you are usually expecting to see on the freeway at night, I don't think it would have mattered who the driver was. With low beams on, 70mph is probably over driving the visual distance of the headlights (can't react and stop in time when something enters illuminated range) With the hi-beams on, someone
might
have been able to see her and react in time, but she never should have been on the road in the first place. Depending on traffic conditions, trying to dodge her might have caused a worse accident; TFA doesn't say if there were other vehicles on the road or not.

It was the 60 fwy near the 15 fwy.
That means there were definitely other cars on the road and the roadway was well lit with overhead lighting.
There is no way 90% of people can judge oncoming vehicle speed at night even on a well lit freeway - much less a 12 year old being able to make that judgement.
The vast majority of people have no idea how dangerous the freeway is when you're on foot and the lanes are open to traffic.
The driver of the Suburban should have been arrested on the spot.
