Missing break pads? Nice.

Really, it seems brake pads should be on the farking final assembly checklist.

MISSING front brake pads? How do they get out the door with missing front brake pads? GM stands for Gone MIssing?

The Sonic is a neat car but a little smaller than I want. If the Cruze hatchback would come to the states, I'd probably buy it. Since that doesn't look like it's going to happen, I'm probably going to get a Focus.

2011-12-31 02:54:39 AM
That could make your Sonic go boom.

If there's no pad than the piston would contact the rotor. That would result in a god awful metal on metal noise and should be obvious to anyone with more than 2 functioning brain cells something is seriously wrong. How the fark did these cars make it off the dealer lot with this problem unnoticed?

Keep that great GM feeling!!

Done in one

"One time, I hired a monkey to take notes for me in class. I would just sit back with my mind completely blank while the monkey scribbled on little pieces of paper. At the end of the week, the teacher said, 'Class, I want you to write a paper using your notes.' So I wrote a paper that said, 'Hello! My name is Bingo! I like to climb on things! Can I have a banana? Eek, eek!' I got an F. When I told my mom about it, she said, 'I told you, never trust a monkey!'"

Callous: If there's no pad than the piston would contact the rotor.

Only if its the pad on the side of the piston that's missing. In that case, "women" is the answer you're looking for.

the problem was found in a rental car.....rental car agencies buy their cars in bulk

Maybe they parked them on the street in Detroit for a few minutes before shipping them off and they got stolen.

Sonic doesn't need no stinking brakes. He just runs around the planet until he gets back to the place he missed. I love that hedgehog.

DrGunsforHands: What about the Fiesta?

The Fiesta is like a miniature Focus and about the same size as the Sonic. I like small but not that small. I'm trying to hold off for a while to see if the 1.6 eco boost comes to the US version but I need to do something soon, gas is killing me.

One of the clerical staff in my dept has a retena-burn green Fiesta. The color is perfect. There's no way to walk up to that car w/o smiling. She took me for a ride in it, and I was surprised at the room, comfort and level of trim.

You're obviously not a mechanic. I had a customer who came in with his rotors worn down less than paper thin. When I asked him if he had noticed any screeching, he said "oh sure, but that stopped months ago." If the Check Engine light goes out on a car, people assume it's because the car magically fixed itself, not because the light burnt out because it was on constantly. People are far bigger idiots than you might be wanting to believe.

Also: not all brake calipers have pistons on both sides. Floating calipers have the piston(s) on one side, so if the brake pad that's missing is on the other side, I could see how the noise *might* be missed. (Forgive me, I'm not familiar enough with manufacturers to know if GM uses floating or fixed front calipers)

Yeah, I love the look of it and getting almost 40mpg on a car that still has a little pep to it doesn't hurt. The only negative I've found is the MyTouch system which I'll avoid when I buy.

We had a Fiesta back in the day, but then a car made a right-hand turn from the center lane across 2 lanes of traffic in front of us. No more Fiesta.

Save yourself a lot of agony and buy a Toyota. Or at least read Consumer Reports first.

Why would I buy a Toyota when the Focus ranks better than the Matrix in every poll I've seen?

Because when someone gives you advice on how to avoid agony you might want to listen. When it's "DrPainMD" giving the advice? Yeah, you do the opposite.

I'm not a mechanic but I've done brake jobs on 4 or 5 GM cars and they were all the single piston type. Actually, I have never seen a car with pistons on one side. What make cars have "fixed" pistons?

Even if the missing pad was the outside pad I have to wonder what that sounds like. And how does that happen? Someones last day or are the cars being built by someone that has absolutely no clue?

This should come as no surprise.

A few years ago, GM managed to make the wiper fluid reservoir a fire hazard.

The Sonic is made at GM's plant in Orion Township, Michigan. GM and the United Auto Workers union agreed to allow up to 40 percent of the production workers at the plant to be paid less than veteran UAW workers. The agreement was necessary to keep the Sonic from being produced outside the United States, the UAW and GM have said.

Who wants to bet the UAW will blame this on the workers getting paid less?

It's a Daewoo, it's that great defective import feeling. Ask the Toyota folks about that, if you can find a survivor.

RTFA before you start your preprogrammed import rant...it's built by the UAW, in Michigan.

Seriously, I don't even go to many threads here, and you are in every car thread, bashing Toyota. At least try to mix it up a little. Or, you know, read.

I am listening but I have no idea what you are trying to say. Do you only speak in negatives? Oh, I'm sorry, let me put that in a way that will be more clear, I mean not more unclear, do you never not phrase things without using a negative?

Anyway, my comment was a joke.

Because they kill people, I found this out because I read. Sadly, you apparently have trouble with that ability.
If people would remember, I wouldn't have to remind them.

And yet you ignore the picture repeatedly, I guess their deaths have just sloughed right off of your conscience.
At least no one has died in these Sonics, good thing I don't buy GM. I guess GM doesn't even know if it's domestic or not these days. That's what they get for copying imports.
Oh, and if my nature is "preprogrammed" to defend against death thru defect and threats to my country, it's citizens and it's economy, why thank you for pointing that out!

MISSING FRONT BRAKE PADS?!?!?

Dude. That's not a glove compartment light that might short out, or something that vibrates and rubs against something and needs to be retrofitted with some kind of guard.

That's third world bullshiat.

Contemplate your assholes, America!
