Yeah, head injuries tend to scramble a person's thinking. In his mind, getting to the hospital in an ambulance might have made perfect sense.

Exactly! Reading the article drunk also makes you think taking the ambulance was a good idea. Seriously.

Yeah, this will be a fine waste of taxpayers' money... nice long drawn out court procedure, made longer by continuances since the DA will know it's a crock of shiat that cannot be won with any defense claiming diminished capacity due to the injuries and, most importantly, head wound.... but, hey, the economy is in such great shape, why not waste a hundred grand on this!?

no, this is where police discretion in the application of summary offences is called for, that's why they have it
the cops should never have written a ticket in the first place, but since they have, then yeah, dumb bunnies

I was at the ER last week and got a scolding because I left the keys in the ambulance when I unloaded the pt. Not a high crime area plus it was midnight, but still I should be wary. I do personally know a guy that stole an ambulance from another local hospital, plus I'd rather not have to explain how we lost our LP15 and all our meds :(

And yet, 99.9% of the people who agree that this is a waste of money think that government jobs that produce nothing are STIMULUS!!! and scream that the economy will collapse if we don't have millions of worthless bureaucrats twiddling their thumbs for 40 hours per week in overpriced government offices.

Private non profit ALS. Our "old" truck is 2 years old. We have 15's and a spare 12 on the trucks, plus Lucas thumpers. Also we have a 45% out of hospital cardiac arrest survival rate, not 5% :) (also, we're hiring medics! EIP)

Precisely. They should not charge anyone with any crime whatsoever because there's a chance they might not get convicted. And if they do get convicted then we have to house and feed them too! What a waste of money, enforcing laws.

DA's are on salary, so they get paid the same no matter what, and it would likely be a one day trial. So yeah, not $100K. Will likely plea it down to a joyride anyway.
If you knew how many drunken aholes come into ER's causing shiat with "head injuries" after fights where they of course were in the right, "attacked," you might be a little more jaded.
OBTW, "head wound"
does not equal
"not guilty by reason of insanity."

No, it's like breaking into someone's house, then killing them.
Burglary
, roughly, = entering a building or vehicle with the intent to commit a theft or felony. So, burglary, whether or not he ultimately stole the amberlamps.

FTFA:
"I got beat up by four guys," Credit said, according to Tampa Police. "I saw the ambulance and I was going to drive myself to the hospital."
Yes, because when you're in need of medical attention and you see an ambulance, your first instinct is to steal it and drive yourself to the hospital.
Apparently, stealing any other kind of vehicle wouldn't have worked. If you need to get to the hospital, you can only get there by stealing an ambulance. Stealing any other kind of vehicle would have caused you to drive somewhere else.

I'm not sure I like the idea of charging him with auto burglary and grand theft auto both. This is clearly one crime, and I'm not a fan of trying to making things look worse than they are.
But I was mostly surprised at people complaining that he got arrested. He stole an ambulance. That's illegal, everyone knows it. Saying "Oh, but he had been injured, so it's OK" simply makes no sense at all. And while it apparently didn't, it *could* have had a major impact on someone else. Death, for instance. They had gone out on a call, so someone thought they needed an ambulance. The ambulance arrives, and instead of taking them to the hospital, it get stolen by this idiot.
I've no sympathy for thieves, and I can't see any reason to just say "Hey, don't do that again" and let him go.

I say charge him with two crimes. Charge him for breaking into the vehicle and charge him with stealing. We are already way too lenient on criminals. Time to get strict. Besides, what if the person being treated by the EMTs had had a life-threatening injury/condition?

Which may be why you're the only person in this thread who has said any such thing.
The point being made is that the confusion and disorientation caused by the head injury could be a reason why taking the ambulance to the hospital made sense to him. Or that a defense attorney could successfully argue such a thing.

Finding evidence that says otherwise is trivial. You're lying about stuff that anyone can see.

No, not lying. There are no posts here that I can find that say that an injury should negate the charges. Each one is saying that the
head
injury should be taken into account as a mitigating factor. Including the example you just used.
Having an injury is not relevant. Having side effects from a significant head trauma, indicated by the statement "... there was a noticeable puncture wound to his head.", is.
JuggleGeek

You were lying. We all know it. I'll just mark you as a troll and move on.
And no matter how much assholes like you want to pretend, having a head injury doesn't make it legal for people to do this kind of stuff.
