That's not too much of a problem at the Eugene Public library, mainly because they have separate sections on different floors for the computers. There a computers in the children's section, some in the teen/young adult section & both of those are on the first floor, None of them can access porn. Those computers that can are on the second floor and can only be used by adults. Even then there is a possibilty of a child seeing porn if they're on the second floor with an adult.

Having said that, I don't mind if someone is looking at porn on a library computer, but if you have to masturbate, use one of the restrooms.

If I can't surf porn in their cardboard box then they can't surf porn in my library. Unless it's human centipede/tentacle porn. Then you Poindexters better clear the floor.

Negatives:
- upsetting people who don't want to see porn accidently
- exposing kids to things they don't/can't understand (can't explain German scat porn to a 10-year-old)
- having to deal with folks with no impulse control jerking off

Positives:
- some nebulous pie-in-the-sky concept of freedom of speech

Fark them, go get porn somewhere else, not on my tax dollars.

Watch porn at the library: yes.
Stroke off to the porn at the library: no.

Can't the libraries copy the first video stores that rented porn tapes, and have a separate roomed off section where those computers can be used to view porn?

2011-12-30 08:23:46 PM
They're at the library, they can look up educational porn via anatomy books, the romance section, and national geographic. They're jerking it AND learning. Actually, if they're jerking it in plain sight then they should be thrown out and never allowed back in. I would say arrested, but three meals and a cell has to be better than being homeless.

Pff they should just look at it on their smart phones or tablets like everyone else.

THIS! I was just in the library today and had to pass 3 smelly bums parked in the New Books section. Why should hardworking citizens have to have everything we value ruined by the dregs of society?

As a librarian, this isn't a new issue. And really it's not just the porn on computers, either, it's how the library facilities are to be used. A lot of homeless also use library bathrooms as showers...so plenty of patrons walk in on, well, everything. As for the computers, the American Library Association (ALA) is really big about free speech - so they're reluctant to put any kind of filters or any type of censorship on terminals. [This is the same root cause of rage-moms freaking out when their 12 year old checks out Twilight or whatever other crap they don't approve of and expect librarians to be the censor and parent] But, most libraries, especially small branches, are quite small and have the children's sections adjacent and on the same floor as the adult section, so the likelihood of children coming up on these sorts of things becomes higher. Libraries provide tons of services beyond just lending books to all citizens, including the homeless, but I think a certain line needs to be drawn. It's not appropriate to provide porn viewing stations. Also, there are many other resources provided to the homeless, both through out government and private sources, that provide showers, food, etc.

Advocates complained in April that Sweden's national library, acting on a standing order to archive copies of all domestic publications, has been gathering books and magazines of child pornography from the years 1971-1980 when it was legal, and, as libraries do, lending them out.

At my office we have a semi-open concept with computers on our desk in full-view of customers and passerby through our big windows.

You wouldn't believe how many homeless come in to ask if they can use our internet. Or phone.

"Most recently, it was the November arrest of a homeless man in the Laguna Beach library for allegedly fonding himself while viewing porn, with a crowd of seven other men around him."

Lol I bet they were cheering on him to ejaculate as high as possible!

I don't think it would be right to censor even porn at libraries. Porn is still part of humanity, and there is a reason why porn was created by humans in the first place. Whether your intention is the jack off or to actually study all sorts of porn is part of anyone's right to freedom of information. Yes, you can use information to jack off.

Still, I do understand the effects of a person masturbating in front of a public computer in the library. Sticky keyboards, monitors, tables, chairs, and floors are terrible, as well as possible health risks. Forget about morality because that is a subjective matter. What I think should be done is to have a section in every library where you can view porn. In that area, only people who want to find porn will be around and people who don't want porn can stay in the other area.

There should also be guidelines in this porn section, like not ejaculating on furniture and equipment. They can either BUY cups, sanitizers, and tissue from a dispenser in the library if they intend to jack off. The rule should be "Clean up your mess or pay a fine.". The moment someone is caught jacking off without cleaning his DNA or not using cups/sanitizers, he/she should be banned from that library forever.

I think that in this way, both porn and non-porn researchers can use the public library peacefully without causing trouble towards each other while promoting good health and safety.

Used to work at a university library:

We were not allowed to tell anyone to stop watching porn on the computers unless a patron complained. One guy used to like to pull up gay bondage porn, full-screen it, and then walk away. We just kinda had to let it go until some co-ed started screaming.

Best had to be the homeless guy who used the VCR carousels on the top floor. He came in every day and asked for headphones. Was so nice and polite that we gave him a courtesy card so he could go entertain himself. After 3 years (!), someone finally walked by and happened to glance at the screen. Porn. His response was to say he always used the headphones, so he didn't see the problem. To his credit, I saw him sitting at the carousels just about every day and never saw him spanking it. Not long after, all VCR- and DVD-enabled TVs got moved to a single, monitored location, and you had to let a library employee put the cassette/disc in a central player rack. No specific prohibition against porn, but the idea you had to let some wee granny load your naughty films for you served just as well.

The homeless should not be allowed to live, period.

Either put them in forced-labor camps or put them in gas chambers.

TravisBickle62: They should not be allowed in the library at all, they are dirty and smell bad

I was once at a town meeting where the issue of the homeless came up during the library budget. People were getting tired of them and the solutions to discourage them were getting expensive. So several people just suggested that they close the library altogether. One idea was to work a deal so that residents could use a neighboring town's library. Another was to switch to a warehouse system where you could reserve your books online or by phone and then either pick them up at will-call or have them mailed to you. Some people just wanted to nix the library altogether.

I understand that censorship is a slippery slope that should be avoided, but the alternative could be that there is nothing left to censor once public sentiment turns against you and forces you to close. A lot of people get really upset when they see something paid for using their property taxes being sullied by people who are not contributing to the system. The think-of-the-children folks are just an additional force working against you.

I thought my library dealt with this pretty well by locating all computers in middle of the entire library on the ground floor near the entrance where everyone had to check in or out books.

/granted they had the luxury of designing it that way since it was a new building

If you are really, I've got a question. I've always wondered, is this an exhibitionist / fetish type behavior? Or maybe an uncontrolled addiction? I have to believe that viewing porn at home is infinitely more comfortable than viewing it in public in the awful library chairs. There must be something people get out of the act that makes people do this.

2011-12-30 09:10:40 PM
It's an easy fix, if you smell like a walking dung heap you can't come into the library and contaminate the air or the computers. It's not a constitutional problem, it's a pollution problem. I always sniff test any chair before sitting down so I don't spend the rest of the day walking around with the dead cat in a dumpster smell. Somebody who didn't understand the principle gave me an odd look while I was doing it once and I just pointed at one of the perambulating shiat bags and a glimmer of understanding passed through her eyes.

Agreed, so long as that's not discriminatory and it isn't just the homeless that get kicked out / stopped from viewing porn.
