That's not too much of a problem at the Eugene Public library, mainly because they have separate sections on different floors for the computers. There a computers in the children's section, some in the teen/young adult section & both of those are on the first floor, None of them can access porn. Those computers that can are on the second floor and can only be used by adults. Even then there is a possibilty of a child seeing porn if they're on the second floor with an adult.

Having said that, I don't mind if someone is looking at porn on a library computer, but if you have to masturbate, use one of the restrooms.

This whole premise is misleading because 1: the homeless have to walk on pins and needles making sure not to fall asleep and for fark sake don't get cought smoking out front. And,, B: Most of the people watching the porn are the poor farks renting rooms near the said library who go there because they can't afford internet, so that's where they go to get their porn. Mugato: Most decent hotels have rooms with computers with internet access. You don't even need a room key. Or go to any college.

I've been to many, many universities in the last few years to recruit for my department. I can only think of maybe one that didn't require MAC authentication based on an existing user account for the wireless. Come to think of it, it was a community college campus being used for a central regional recruitment effort.

They don't have laptops you can check out at the Eugene Public Library, but you're free to bring your own laptop with you and use the library wi-fi. You can also use the the wi-fi from the Novella Cafe in the library's lobby, but they ask you to buy something if you're using one of their tables.

He seemed like the kind of guy I could drink a beer with. I was there in the Summer of 2007 and used the computers to check e-mail. Phone had no internet and I had no laptop then. They have a very nice library and transit system too. I would live there if I had to choose another town to be in.

They do indeed. However, the employment scene could use some improving. That was the main branch of the library you visited, but they have two smaller locations as well.

As I recall there was quite a bit of discussion about the lagging economy due to problems with the timber industry...or something like that. I know they make some damn fine travel trailers up there :P

But in all seriousness I found it delightful, if not a bit odd, they had no sales tax. It was so cool to pay exactly what an item is marked at. Around here they tax everything.

I'm legitimately conflicted on this issue. On the one hand, these guys have pretty much ruined the magic of the library system, on the other hand, it reeeaaalllyy sucks to be them, and I would probably end up doing the same crap with similar limited options. I don't just mean surfing porn, but the whole dirty, smelly people camping out at the library in general. Hell, they might not even all be homeless. Either way, libraries have lost their charm.

Threads like these remind me of how blessed I am to be a librarian at a private university that restricts access.

I don't think it would be right to censor even porn at libraries. Porn is still part of humanity, and there is a reason why porn was created by humans in the first place. Whether your intention is the jack off or to actually study all sorts of porn is part of anyone's right to freedom of information. Yes, you can use information to jack off.

Still, I do understand the effects of a person masturbating in front of a public computer in the library. Sticky keyboards, monitors, tables, chairs, and floors are terrible, as well as possible health risks. Forget about morality because that is a subjective matter. What I think should be done is to have a section in every library where you can view porn. In that area, only people who want to find porn will be around and people who don't want porn can stay in the other area.

There should also be guidelines in this porn section, like not ejaculating on furniture and equipment. They can either BUY cups, sanitizers, and tissue from a dispenser in the library if they intend to jack off. The rule should be "Clean up your mess or pay a fine.". The moment someone is caught jacking off without cleaning his DNA or not using cups/sanitizers, he/she should be banned from that library forever.

I think that in this way, both porn and non-porn researchers can use the public library peacefully without causing trouble towards each other while promoting good health and safety.

Porn isn't a right, it's a privilege. If people want to look at porn, they should find their own means to do so. Since most men don't have impulse control when it comes to things of a sexual nature, I don't trust them to not masturbate while viewing it in the library. Also homeless people probably have low standards for hygiene so unless people want to risk touching their spunk on a regular basis and the librarians want to spend their time cleaning it up, I would say it's probably a bad idea.
