"You used too much vibrato. Pay up."

This is sooo stupid on so many levels. I hope you Hoosiers remember shiat like this come election time.

Because nothing says freedom like criminal penalties for not revering the state properly.

Isn't that an infringement on some first amendment rights?

I'm all for the first ammendment, but holy shiat some of those people can really screw up the anthem. It's like singers that try to make Christmas carols "their own". Oh well, I guess something has to happen to get the jets to fly over so we can get on with things.

Not necessarily, depending on how the bill is worded, but it's a blatant assault on common sense. If we're going to start fining singers for performances that we don't like, the national anthem is way, way far down on my list.

This law, like many others, has been introduced by the Tories that pledge allegiance to the king, not the U.S. Constitution. As Nixon used to argue, "Le loi, c'est moi."

We will. Sadly.

I dunno. Did you ever gear Beyonce sing the national anthem? It sounded like an assault on the senses.

Yes yes. We know. You have a wide octave range. You don't need to use the anthem to show it off.

2011-12-30 01:44:12 PM
If I'm a sports venue, I refuse to perform the National Anthem. If I'm a singer, I refuse to sing it. Problem solved.

2011-12-30 01:44:15 PM
This is a prime example of what is wrong with government. Over stepping it's bounds, fixing things that aren't broken with either unenforceable policies or needless paperwork that means a new paper pushing job for an in-law. And of course wasting time and taxpayer money just considering the ridiculous bill. We need to get a Patriotic Entertainment Inspector to that football game before kick-off!!

Sin_City_Superhero: Isn't that an infringement on some first amendment rights?

You are giving this guy WAAAAY to much credit. It's clear he's never even heard of the Constitution, let alone the 1st Amendment.

And what is the "right" way to sing the "Star Spangled Banner"?

do you have the sing the secret extra verses?

I mean the second isn't bad:

On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mist of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep.
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream
'Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

But the third is bit bloodthirsty

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

and the fourth just a bit bombastic and Jingoistic dontcha think?

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n - rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, for our cause is just,
And this be our motto--"In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I am all in favour of this, and insist on a return to the original wording forthwith.

To Anacreon in heaven where he sat in full glee,
A few sons of harmony sent a petition,
That he their inspirer and patron would be,
When this answer arrived from the jolly old Grecian:
Voice, fiddle aud flute, no longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name and inspire you to boot!
And besides I'll instruct you like me to entwine
The myrtle of Venus and Bacchus's vine.

The news through Olympus immediately flew,
When old Thunder pretended to give himself airs,
If these mortals are suffered their scheme to pursue,
The devil a goddess will stay above stairs,
Hark! already they cry, in transports of joy,
A fig for Parnassus, to Rowley's we'll fly,
And there my good fellows, we'll learn to entwine
The myrtle of Venus and Bacchus's vine.

The yellow-haired god, and his nine fusty maids,
To the hill of old Lud will incontinent flee,
Idalia will boast but of tenantless shades,
And the biforked hill a mere desert will be,
My thunder, no fear on't, will soon do its errand,
And, damn me I'll swinge the ringleaders, I warrant
I'll trim the young dogs, for thus daring to twine
The myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's vine.

Apparently, everything's perfect in Indiana and its legislature doesn't have any real public policy to consider.

I hope this moron gets his stupid bill passed. I'd come down to Indy and sing it on a loudspeaker, Aguilera-style with offensive alternative lyrics.

The other day, someone said,

"There is not a face nor palm large enough for this."

Pretty much sums up everything about this story.

I'm torn on this one. Obviously the law and the fining and so forth are idiotic, but the song is indeed easily messed up, as we can hear from all the B-list and C-list "entertainers" who are hired to sing it.
C'mon, people, it's the National Anthem. It's not about you. Do the standard rendition, sit down, collect your check, go home.

/anthem really should be something else, and NOT "God Bless America."

Jose can you see?

Meh, I don't mind this. Our local Choral department though it would be cool to add in a couple extra verses. That is stupid. Sing the lyrics the way they are written.

As far as singing it with a crazy melody to jazz it up, I really don't care as long as all the words are there without any addition.

CSB: I sang in one of the country's oldest college a cappella groups. We would often get invited to sing the Anthem at sporting events if we were in town. We were supposed to sing for the Red Sox season opener one year. But this was shortly after the Roseanne debacle. They made us pre-record it and lip synch on the field.

It was the only time we sang it with perfect timing (no echo/delay to compensate for).

It's a good thing we have Republicans like Dame Becker fighting for small government by sending Anthem Enforcement Squads to monitor our high school sporting events.

Thank you, Sen. Vaneta Becker, R-Evansville, for keeping Government out of our lives.

I agree, Rep. Becker, but brother Marvin can never be replicated (new window)

Given how much a bunch of pansies the right is, I vote we remove the line "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?" because honestly, it doesn't describe the nation anymore, not in a post 9/10 world.

I've got a better idea. How about we just stop singing the national anthem at sporting events. It is an inherently stupid and pointless tradition.

/and no more farking God Bless America during baseball games. Take Me Out to the Ballpark is the correct and only song required during a game...

2011-12-30 02:00:18 PM
Ah, yes. Small government conservativism at its best. The hypocrisy emanating from The Country's Worst Legislature every year never fails to stun those with more than two brain cells to rub together.

This law would make me want to sing it in the African clicking language.

I've started to think that Canada's anthem should be "The Maple Leaf Forever" instead of "O Canada".

The Star Spangled Banner is a terrible piece of music and one of the worst national anthems I've ever heard. There. I said it. It's so damn hard to sing because it's an amelodic piece of shiat. America the Beautiful is superior in every conceivable way.

Thank you for this comon sense. I enjoyed the 2 blue jackets games I went to because the performer of the anthem was spot on. Nothing fancy, just a straight performance.
/only thing about a Jackets game worth enjoying.

I am a small government Republican and have performed our anthem as well as Canada's at Cubs/Expos games decades ago. As such, this clearly rubs me the wrong way.

HOWEVER, nothing will stop me from kicking Roseanne in the throat for her intentional mauling of the song should I ever see her in person.

As an american, I will confess I find myself singing O Canada during hockey games because it's so damn enjoyable.

How stupid, and also what would appear to be a violation of expression to have such a law on the books.

If a venue is really that concerend about how a performer will do the Anthem, it can certianly be handled via contract with said performer.

Then again, the bill is obviously just a grab for attention, which seems to have worked for Becker.
