The sad fact is most corporations, even the tech savy ones, are for this bill.

The wild west days of the internet is over, folks.

This never was a free market. But we still have free speech. It's going to take a lot to get rid of that.

The problem is, I have no farking faith in the Supreme Court anymore.

While it's true that the whole SOPA/ProtectIP mess makes my asshole clench, I don't fear it as much as I ought to for this very reason. Legislature is slow, and government is inefficient. Technology and the people who know how to use it to its fullest potential are neither of these things. Any roadblocks they try to put up will be circumvented and rendered irrelevant before they're even put into place.

If it passes, I foresee the same thing happening with this as what happened with the piracy that inspired it in the first place: They'll make an example out of a few high-profile scofflaws, but it won't actually make a dent. It'll be one of those cases where the law is on the books, but it would require more than their total resources to actually enforce it.

No, they aren't. Hell the only tech company that supported the bill was GoDaddy, and they backed off after people left them because of their support

Sure, there'll be free speech, except it will be in the form it took before the internet, ie, transmitted through your mouth rather than your fingers.

So, that's it huh? Just roll over and die? At least try to think of a way to fight back. The people who punished Godaddy had more nads than you.

Uh, being able to control the Internet is most governments' wet dream. Considering how corporate control over our government is rampant, though, this will be decided by our fellow citizens, the corporations, not us.

I was watching CSPAN when this was being discussed and every time someone mentioned SOPA, all the Congresscritters started clapping and lighting cheese on fire.

I just don't understand Politics sometimes.

That's because, for the most part, the RIAA has learned their lesson. They're sitting back, looking at others (specifically the MPAA) and laughing!

"You dumb farks! Didn't you see the cluster we were caught in for a decade that accomplished nothing but ruin the lives of a few kids/grandparents and make us look farking terrible? Once we just embraced the new technology, everything got better!"

Only for connections originating in America. You really think the root DNS will be allowed to stay in the states once it passes? Think again. You really think people aren't pricing up a house in Sweden to use as their VPN out point? Think again. You really think an American organisation in charge of anything to do with the Internet will be listened to and more importantly obeyed? Think again.

America is and it is important to add WILLFULLY taking itself back to the digital stone age.

I though the point of representative government was that those representatives were better suited to govern because they were, you know, more educated that the unwashed masses. Maybe that was true in the 1700's, but it isn't anymore. We need to amend the how the legislative branch works, but i'll admit I don't have a better idea at hand.

2011-12-30 05:03:04 PM
Congress doesn't have to be informed about SOPA, they're just there to vote for what those nice lobbyists tell them will be good for the country. Shoot, they'll even let the lobbyists draft the legislation themselves, so the poor uninformed elected official doesn't accidentally screw it up due to their lack of knowledge on the issue.

Gotta love how Geeks will fight kicking and screaming against the government taking away their "free movies" but basically didn't do much more than whimper when the new indefinite detention of US citizens without trial provisions of NDAA were passed. Apparently having your website taken down for hosting episodes of TV shows is a more heinous an injustice than being detained indefinitely at the pleasure of the government.

In related news, so are most Congress-shiatheads' moronic constituents. They're not only going to destroy freedom and fair competition on the internet so a few multi-billion dollars companies can use entirely unfair legal powers to destroy anybody they want to consolidate and protect their buggy whip businesses, they're going to get away with it and make a boatload of money doing it.

If crime really didn't pay, nobody would ever run for public office.

Very interesting!

It would take years to wade through all this though. The lawmakers don't have the time to do that, they have to go spend all the money being thrown at them by the supporters of the bill.

When netflix tried to break into the Canadian market all the dinosaur broadcasters tried to get a law passed to put ridiculous bandwidth caps on the consumer thus squashing any chance netflix had of being successful and Harper was right behind them all the way. Not sure how it all turned out but apparently netflix Canada sucks balls because of this type of sh*t.

Now how in the f*ck is that fair?

The people b*tching about losing money to the internet would be far better off just cataloging and streaming the shows themselves. It would squish the illegal sites and they'd get their ad revenues. But NOooOOoooo... they gotta be f*ckstains about it and treat their customers like criminals.

Boycott them all.
