Jesus...Lore Sjöberg writes for Wired now? MAN, that guy gets around. I'll never forget that Brunching Shuttlecocks was the first thing on the internet that ever made me laugh out loud.

Spotify would be a lot more appealing if (except for some early invitees) it didn't require you to give it access to your facebook account, post loads of shiat about what you're listening to your wall, etc.

Fark you spotify.

I was wondering why Fark.com was not on the list, then I remembered it was only for things that people actually had big expectations for.

Interesting: not sure I get the Tintin hate. I'm a fan of the series myself, and own every one of Herge's books. I thought the movie was pretty decent, and about as good as could be achieved, to be honest. Yes, it changed the plots a bit, but they hardly could've been ported straight to movie form intact. Yes, it changed the visual style, but short of making it a cartoon, they had little choice but to do so. It kept a lot of what made the series great, though -- the humor, the sense of adventure, and the insane level of detail in background elements.

In all, this Tintin fan would happily watch the movie again -- and as a bonus, the 3D version largely avoids the usual gimmicks and feels quite natural as a 3D movie.

I remember when Groupon actually would do things for places I visit... now it's the "half-price tix" kiosk from the Vegas strip, or otherwise peddling some skin treatment that day. It thinks I need to go see the cat magician while having my hair did. Forever. And ever. Maybe I just want some damn burgers already!

Yeah, my wife was surprised when I told her I saw everything she was listening to on Facebook. I showed her my news feed with all her Spotify songs showing up. She was a little creeped out.

I tried Spotify once and could only find about half of what I was looking for. I listen to a lot of metal but even so, none of it was terribly obscure. Grooveshark has everything though. I can't believe it hasn't been shut down yet.

2011-12-30 02:10:37 PM
btw, for those claiming Grooveshark > Spotify, you obviously don't use Grooveshark. I can't tell you how often I've found songs that the uploader intentionally uploaded something completely different with the wrong title, or with intentional corruption. I've reported many of these myself (and they're big-name, popular tracks that filter to the top of searches for a given song, so I don't believe I'm the only one finding and reporting them.) Months later, Grooveshark hasn't removed a one of them.

Spotify sucks compared to its European sibling too, but that's because the music selection here is comparitively awful. With Spotify UK, I seldom found tracks I wanted to listen to that weren't on there, regardless of which continent they came from. With Spotify US, if it's not American, there's a good chance it's not on there (and even if it is, there's a fair chance it's missing).

That, and their increasingly obtrusive ads, such as the popups in their client that prevent me clicking anything in the interface, to pause a song or similar. That, and the fact that they make me use the physical control on my speakers to ignore ads, because hitting mute or turning down the volume on your PC below a certain threshold automatically pauses the ads. (But doing the same *doesn't* pause the music.)

Never had that problem on Grooveshark - but then again I don't listen to popular music.

I can find basically anything I want, and stream it free. I've had a song or two disappear from my playlist once every blue moon, but that's about it.

I never had one, but I always thought Microsoft just dropped the ball on marketing them. There should have been Zune minis given away with retail copies of Windows 7; Zunes packaged with X Boxes, Zune contests on every college campus.

It was a good product, but not enough people ever heard of it.

I'm not one to dislike ads, so the thought of ad revenue reaching the artists on spotify that I'm listening to made it more appealing then say, winamp. Heck, I don't even use local files unless it's a song that's not on spotify.

I also like the whole facebook thing. It's not like I'm ashamed of the music I listen to or anything.

Not getting the Spotify hate at all. Pretty sure the $10 a month is only if you don't want the ads. Also, if you don't want what you play showing up on facebook there's a really easy preference setting for it. Grooveshark should be on this list instead of Spotify.

We're still going to have to listen to "Stand" and "Shiny Happy People" another 4 million times before we're laid to rest or the Earth implodes,

I haven't heard either of those songs in almost a decade.

2011-12-30 02:35:47 PM
Not sure about metal, but I was pretty impressed with spotify's collection, it even has independent stuff like The Protomen which was a clincher for me when i was deciding what to use. As for the facebook thing, I have it linked with "post to my wall" disabled. I have a couple facebook friends who have extensive spotify playlists and I love the facebook integration. Their shared playlists appear right under their name in the sidebar without me having to lift a finger.

Not sure about foreign music either, the most foreign I get is Infected Mushroom, Arctic Monkeys, White Lies and Armin which spotify all has. Ah, no Zeppelin though, which they really should have.

Spotify would be more appealing if they didn't require you to have a Facebook account. When I went to sign up for Spotify and saw that they removed other account options so a Facebook account is required, I bailed.

What I don't get is the people who write these lists are cool enough to pass judgement on things they deem inferior - is this not the backbone of the Hipster movement? (besides spending money on what they think is currently in resurgence but not realizing they're being manipulated by corporate America)
All that nonsense aside, Michael Stipe is/was one of them. I could care less about REM, but to toss up a middle finger at them seems counterintuitive and out of place considering the rest of the list.
Methinks Lore Sjoberg is the bastard child of a woman Michael Stipe nailed while on tour in Europe and never got daddy's attention.

A lot of people are reporting issues with Spotify's Facebook linking becoming increasingly heavyhanded. I don't have this problem (maybe I got in before that), but fark that noise.

Still, Spotify has a satisfyingly broad selection and is great to listen to while I work. I've discovered a lot of awesome new music that way.

I'll admit Grooveshark isn't perfect. Occasionally I find a song that isn't labeled correctly, sometimes a song just don't play, and like you say, songs just disappear from my playlists sometimes. I keep an Excel spreadsheet as a back-up for that last one. It's a problem, but not a large one to me. But I find that Grooveshark has a much better interface and that it has a broader, deeper library than Spotify.

2011-12-30 02:44:37 PM
I'm glad everyone is pointing out that you don't have to share everything you listen to with a simple setting. The spotify hate really comes from the convoluted invite process after it initially launched in US. I got a bunch of invites to use and I sent them out, only 3 of them actually worked the rest of them were just links for people to buy the service. It rewarded the early adopters while leaving broke friends out in the cold.

It is awesome though. It integrates with your music and you can collaborate with other people in shared playlists. Also, you can do some naughty things with Replay Music 4 running in the background.

I've had a Zune HD almost since the came out, but just replaced it with Xmas presents (Sansa Clip Zip and Samsung Galaxy Player). However, I'm still going to use my Zune on occasion, at least until I can find a suitable replacement for Tiki Totems on Android. No luck so far.

It made something close to 300 million in places other than America, so yeah, not a bomb by any stretch. There's just not much of an audience for it here, and even more who've never heard of it. I think the last time I saw Tintin in any sort of public conscience in America outside of graphic novels in bookstores (and the "Ha Ha! Oh Wow" meme) was when the animated series was on Nickelodeon...about 15 years ago.

Maybe. It wouldn't surprise me if it's unhip to like REM anymore. They're old and they play guitar-driven rock. Not exactly the most popular genre anymore.

Just noting how obviously the writer has never heard any of their songs, but probably got stuck watching a couple of videos that got played ad nauseum somewhere.

If you weren't part of the first wave of spotify users - you can't use it without facebook. And even though it may not "post" anything - it still has access to your information. On top of that - you have yet another service tied to one account.
