(Some Guy) Asinine Town bans non residents from sledding because "If the sled riders were to lose control or were unable to get off their sled, they could potentially go over the hill into the woods". Ostensibly to Grandma's house   (pittsburgh.cbslocal.com) divider line 35

if its for "safety" reasons.. then why do they care more about non-residents??

LOL

Meh. They are just limiting their liability. The article states that no citations were issued last year. They just want it on record that they told the residents not to go sledding there. If someone gets hurt, it is their own damn problem.

But my grandmother lives in a condominium.

Weeeee!

I remember when I was a kid and we had this sledding hill. Halfway down there was a lip. At the top, we'd run as fast as we could to pick up speed, fly down, hit the lip, and go sailing through the air and into the woods where we had this wicked packed snow/ice trail that we didn't even need to steer on. It was like a f*cking bobsled run, man.

It's a shame that today's kids can't experience the same awesome fun. Stupid wuss town. Poor kids.

My town has one of the best sledding hills anywhere. One of the reasons its so good is that it's a bowl so you have people from everywhere meeting down at the bottom.

/good times

You can still have fun. As long as you sign this waiver, pay the Amusement Surtax, and wrap yourself in bubblewrap.

My thoughts also. Behind nearly every asinine law/regulation/policy there is terror at the prospect of another lawsuit (usually a pretty legitimate fear).

I don't even blame the lawyers. I blame the idiots who can't man up and take responsibility for themselves or their poor parenting and the juries who award said idiots money.

Being a Pittsburgher, I live close to said area. Makes me want to pack up the wife and kid and go there. Just because.

But, right next to my suburb of Pittsburgh there is the best sledding hill around. Dormont Park.

Beaver. So slippery you can sled. So much win.

North of LA, there are mountains that get some snow every year. Usually the weekend after a snow, all the idiots with an innertube or inflatable ring for the swimming pool drive the 2 hours to go sledding. There aren't any groomed sledding hills or even hills designated for sledding. People just stop at the first incline they come to a push their 1 year old down the hill. So it is really no shock when the snowflake hits a rock under the 2 inches of snow and goes sailing into a tree. Then the parents scream that there were no warning signs or Rangers to stop them and everyone, except themselves, are responsible. I can see why a town would want to help midigate problems. Sad really that towns have to protect themselves from stupid.

I miss going sledding. Darn snowless Texas. back when I did live in a state that had snow, my favorite sledding hill had a somewhat hidden bump in the middle. If someone went down the exact middle, you could tell they were new to hill. Unless they were the crazy kids trying to get air. It would launch you 2-3 feet in the air. Good times, good times.

\Wheres the Christmas Vacation sledd pictures?

No sledding in Minnesota, as there has yet to be any snow to sled on.

I broke my left femur sled riding down "Morgans Hill" when I was 13 just up the river from Brighton, Pa. in the borough of Bellevue back in the early `70s. We were an unsupervised group of kids "just having fun".
I hit a patch of ice and couldn`t control the sled, I remember "bailing out" of the sled and riding behind it as I hit an oak tree spot on. If my brother and a couple of other kids hadn`t witnessed it and ran for help I probably would`ve died of exposure, the area was off the beaten track. 6 months later I discarded my crutches. My Dad was later approached by a lawyer who stated that he could sue the borough for "at least $100,000 dollars, that property was foreclosed by the borough years ago and they should`ve declared it off-limits". Dad asked what that would do to property taxes....
Judging from the comments thus far and Subby`s overall ignorance of the world in general I`m not surprised that everyone would jump on a small Pa. borough`s attempt to actually get people to supervise children sled riding, and in today`s legal enviroment to somehow limit their liability from litigation from the results of gravity.

What a bunch of putz`s you all are.........

Virginia Beach, VA has precisely 1 hill of any size, Mt Trashmore (ex landfill). Sledding is absolutely, totally banned, thanks to multiple levels of idiots.

"On Feb. 3, 1996, more than 5,000 sledders jammed the hill. It is 65 feet tall and sloped just right. Hundreds of riders hit the hill with vinyl tablecloths, inflatable boats, trash can lids and even a canoe.

It was a mess. The slope was packed. Sledders ran into fences and trees and parked cars: 20 were injured; 13 were taken to the hospital; two required surgery for abdominal injuries. Rescue workers reported broken bones and dislocated shoulders."

"Both hospital emergency rooms asked us to close it,"

"The following year, 1997, a committee recommended changes. No more sledding on the steep slopes. No more canoes, or surfboards, or car hoods. Bales of straw would be placed in strategic places on the hill.

That didn't last, either.

In 2000, after three years of allowing limited sledding, the city banned it altogether."

FTA: The ban on friends and relatives from other communities and non-residents using Roosevelt Park, says Brady, was recommended by the borough's insurance company.

Dicks. And they wouldn't return calls? Cowardly dicks.

Ya know, I imagine if you created a big enough pile of snow, and let it set and compact enough, that loop could be built, and it would be awesome.

Google search for "snow loop" just links to video clips and songs.

Talk about missing the point. You act as if "today's legal environment" is a force of nature that can't be bargained with, can't be reasoned with, doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and absolutely will not stop, ever, until we're all locked in padded rooms for our own safety. Who is ignorant of the world again?

Our beef is against the legal system itself...which CAN be changed. We would like that to happen. Personal responsibility and acceptable risk needs to be concepts that gain traction in the courts. And sometimes "your kid knew perfectly well what he was doing, and what might happen as a result" should be a viable defense.

Makes perfect sense. Residents there are the only people in the world that understand the concept of "bailing out".
