Relax citizens, the data is only being collected for toll-collecting purposes, and will never ever be released to law enforcement or under subpoena. So there's nothing at all to be worried about.

Whoops. I think I got it up to about 75 yesterday on the bridge. I was just so blown away by how little traffic there was yesterday morning, I just couldn't help but floor it in my powerhouse Nissan Sentra.

I'll let y'all know if I get a ticket...

What do you mean? Speeding, drunk driving, murder, it's all breaking the law and therefore equally evil, right?

Really, it's all about the money. They need accurate speeds so they can separate the cars and bill them for the toll accordingly. The police do not collect money from these tolls, so fark that agency.

No they don't (as shown on Mythbusters) plus if the cops find out that you were trying to obscure your plate, that's a bit steeper a punishment than a speeding ticket

I've never quite gotten people's obsession with the "right to speed". Provided the data collection can be shown to be as accurate as a hand-held radar gun (which are pretty iffy to my understanding)... I'm all for sending people tickets. I think the police should have better things to do than sit in a car all day running a speedtrap.

Personally, I'm quite looking forward to the day when traffic is actively managed by a computer. No more sitting at a red light when no one is coming the other way... just get in the car and say "take me to the grocery store" and off I'll go. I can read, text, talk, sleep, masturbate, whatever and let the car just take me there.

Yeah, I know... the idea has problems like how would it handle a kid randomly running out into the street... or a deer.

/speeds just like everyone else
//gotten two tickets in 20 years.. didn't argue with the officer, just paid my fines and left went on

2011-12-30 10:51:25 AM
How would this cut down on drunk driving Mrs. West ?

The sensors only track speed, not swerving etc. So as long as the drunk drives slower they aren't going to get picked out.

"They could use the money and it would save lives, especially during the holiday season when people are out drinking and driving, and not being as responsible as they should be," commuter Kathleen West said.

So why not just send 3 tickets' worth of fines along with your tax returns? If the state needs money so bad, do your part, citizen. Don't intrude on civil liberties (yes, I know you lose a lot when you drive a car, but you retain the right of passage without PC to restrict you, right?) just because your legislature doesn't want to raise taxes or plan responsibly.

Also, I missed the part where these sensors can measure your BAC.

Kathleen West, you are part of the problem.

I keep wondering when the New York State Thruway will start issuing tickets based on "your average speed between toll A and B implies speeding"

"The bridge will be the first in the state with all-electronic tolling rather than cash-collection tollbooths. The "Good to Go" pass allows automatic billing to pre-paid accounts. Those without the sticker will be billed by mail for the toll - plus a $1.50 surcharge. If the toll is not paid 14 days after the bill arrives in the mail, a second toll fee is charged plus $5. Should the toll not be paid 80 days after it initially was issued, a civil penalty plus $40 is charged. After that, the state sends the account to collections."

"Rates are based on the time of day and range from $1.10 late at night to $3.50 at peak times, in each direction."

Don't use the bridge if you don't have a pass I guess.

Til someone wants to sue you. then its all about what dirt they can get and what it can be made into. I guarantee you someone in a custody battle will use "put my child in danger" as a claim once they get that you drove 5 mph over the speed limit and can be proven.

Constant surveillance is not the idea behind a free society, but we don't seem too worried by that until it already happened.

In a related story, a knowing source told me that more than 30 years ago we had the technology to get the weight of a passing commercial truck (obviating the need for the pull-off scales, etc.), but that the trucking lobby would always be able to exert its influence to keep these from being installed.

rubi_con_man: I keep wondering when the New York State Thruway will start issuing tickets based on "your average speed between toll A and B implies speeding"

Oklahoma does this if your average speed is above the posted speed limit. Mostly because it's possible to have an average speed equal to the speed limit between toll plazas if you have a PIKEPASS. Cash fares, not quite so achievable.

Oregon has these, they're the metal plates across the two lanes trucks are allowed in. The arm overhead is a transponder reader, there's another that sends back a signal to the transponder about a thousand feet down the highway. ODOT issues truckers who want them a transponder with a signal that will show green if the scale is closed, yellow if they're cleared to continue on the mainline, and red if they're required to exit at the scale. If you have no transponder, you're required to exit at the scale when it's open. The mainline lanes are photo enforced (if it detects a vehicle with no transponder above a certain height or a red transponder in the mainline past the scale, it triggers the camera).

Generation_D: Relax citizens, the data is only being collected for toll-collecting purposes, and will never ever be released to law enforcement or under subpoena. So there's nothing at all to be worried about.

On the other side of the coin, having your speed and location recorded might come in handy if you ever find yourself in a situation involving silver bracelets and "your vehicle was seen leaving the scene of this crime". Proof of exactly where you were.

You really want to get your tin foil helmet on? Here's a great one: those traffic cameras that keep an eye on congestion and give live feeds to the news and 'net? The ones that're a good 25-50 feet in the air? The zoom on those things is amazing. Seen footage of an accident scene where they zeroed in on the action and you could practically count the hairs on the firemens' heads.

Makes you think twice about pulling off the side of the highway to take a leak behind your car, eh?

(On the cooler side of the traffic cameras, also seen footage of a hawk that was hanging out on the sign frame that the cam was attached to. Awesome to watch, but then they moved the camera to get a better look and the bird got spooked and flew off. Still pretty cool to see.)

I wouldn't be surprised if WSDOT wants to downplay the free time. No reason to have people going over it for free when you can trick them into paying for it, right?

Yeah, the whole thing missing from that story was the utter absence of traffic during rush hour yesterday. I was on I90 and it was definitely heavier than usual (although moving along fine).

Of course, with a peak cost of $3.50 each way during normal "heavy use" hours. That's a total of $7/day. Around $140/month for a M-F worker. I can see why, with the way food is skyrocketing around here and the cost of housing, people can't afford a sudden extra $140/month bill.

Now the question is, what government officials or other VIP's don't have to pay this toll? Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
