Union goons and democrats raining shiat sandwiches on the unsuspecting public. Gotta love their optimism.

Democratic state Reps. John Richard King and Wendell Gilliard have filed legislation saying no state agency can force its employees to answer the phone with, "It's a great day in South Carolina," as long as state unemployment is 5 percent or higher.

I like the idea of a job barometer near the phone at some DMV.

"Oh please, oh please, oh please, stay above 5%.

YES!

farking hello, this is South Carolina."

Why don't you be fair and agree that both sides are truly stupid in this one. How about fixing things so SC has more jobs or access to affordable health care?

Instead they'll waste legislative time arguing over a farking phone greeting.

And "union goons"? Really?

But -- is my call important to them?

I forgot where I called here in Orlando - might have been House of Blues or some place at Disney - but they answered "It's a beautiful day here in sunny Orlando." I blurted out, "No it's not. It's farking hot and humid and disgusting."

Needless to say I had to call back and get a different operator.

Answering the phone with anything other than or 'Good afternoon, X agency' should be forbidden.

That 'it's a great day at..' whatever makes me want to kill someone, and at the very least, not do business with them.

"Doctor, this man has cancer."
"Yes, I see. Here, have him hold this flower."
"But doctor, his cancer will be terminal if not properly treated! Holding a flower does nothing!"
"Look, medicine is hard, OK? There's all kinds of drugs and fluids and sometimes they don't even work. Have him hold that flower, and at least everyone who interacts with him will have their spirits lifted in a minuscule and meaningless way. I've done my job."

Actually that would be the Governor Nikki Haley. And yes she's an idiot.

Some people don't need forcing. Their Ghod-given Spirit of Ebullience is enough.

And it's fscking painful to experience. I hate starting a morning of spawn-haulage, barely feeling the first effects of the first cuppa, listening to the repetitive litany of "Route X in service. Have a nice day!" over the radio. A pleasant but business-like tone is fine, but chirpy, TeletubbieTone is just too much.

It's a fecking business, not a revival.

Nikki Haley the idiot governor was the one who came up with that gem.

Haley's a tard, but there's gotta be better things to legislate in S.C. than this. I think I'd avoid working at places that require this bullshiat.

Removing a mandate is not a ban. No longer forcing you to say something is not banning you from saying it.

Also, this is some petty crap right here.

2011-12-30 12:59:06 PM
Yes, but forcing them to answer the phone with "It's a great day here in South Carolina as long as you ignore our unemployment rate and lack of healthcare!" takes too long.

2011-12-30 12:59:35 PM
If I were an employee, I'd be okay with answering the phone like this so long as after X number of calls I'm allowed to answer the phone with "Thanks for calling the state of SC. Now go fark yourself, assface" and then hang up.

2011-12-30 01:13:38 PM
I've never had a real, live government employee actually answer the phone when I've called a government office, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

2011-12-30 01:48:10 PM
At the very least some departments should be exempt. If I was calling Poison Control, the Emergency Management Division for info on a hurricane evacuation route or to get on the Next of Kin Registry, or the Department of Corrections for almost any reason I can think of, and was greeted with "It's a great day in South Carolina", things would probably get messy.

Make that two posts regarding unbelievably idiotic proposed legislation.

Pandering political nonsense is starting to become the norm. I wonder if we'll ever get legislators to spend time on addressing important issues?

As a South Carolina resident, I think the more apt headline would be: "in other news, there are South Carolina Democrats apparerantly".

/there are around Charleston, actually

It's a great day on Fark!

This is the kind of thing only the worst managers come up with. Professionals answer the phone by identifying their organization and/or themselves. This adds a distracting element at the start of what can be a complicated(voice only) communication while implying there is a problem with the employee's or customer's attitude. Telephone communications is an actual science. This is just phoney business bullsh*t.

She should change it to, "It's a great day in THE South Carolina!"

Not to mention it takes foreeeevvveeerrr to say all of that stuff. Ever call a Borders before they went under? It was two minutes of greeting with the phone person not taking a breath because they knew if they did pause to breathe, the caller would interrupt and they wouldn't get to finish it all. I just want "Company name, how can I help you?" or even just "Company name".

I don't care that your name is Brenda. I don't care that you have a smiley phone voice. I don't care for an upsell. I just want to ask my question and get off the goddamned phone.

gadian: I just want "Company name, how can I help you?" or even just "Company name".

This is the best policy for everywhere.

"Hello?" is just as unhelpful as "long stupid generic statement". Especially for government calls as all I really need to know is what department I was incorrectly transferred to.

Makes almost as much sense as this policy (new window).

Struck me as a case of
"Wait a minute...if we paint the deck chairs before rearragning them, everything will be OK!"

Said deck chairs being on the Titanic...

I grew up in Beaufort County. It's nice to see that nothing has changed in the 20 years since I left.

Hilton Head: nuke it from orbit. Three times just to be sure.

I'm a state employee in NC, and if I had to answer the phone every time with a saccharin sweet statement like that one in SC, I'd be saying it as sarcastically or as bored as I possibly could.

If someone at a state-run hospital has to call the next of kin for someone who just died, do they start off with "It's a great day in SC, oh btw your father just died."? What if the state patrol just discovered your son wrapped his head around a tree while driving drunk? Do they call his parents and start off with that statement?

It's a great day in SC but since you have reached the child rape reporting hotline, I'm guessing you've seen better. How may I direct your call?

There are studies that show people are more satisfied with their service if the person on the other end of the phone is happy. Of course, trying to make a work environment where people would ACTUALLY be happy is right out, that probably costs money. Platitudes, on the other hand, are free.

as a SC state employee I can testify that this mandated greeting was completely ignored.

benjamen13: as a SC state employee I can testify that this mandated greeting was completely ignored.

I suspected as much.

Let's face it, morans both Democrat and Republican alike: Nobody wants to hear a bored state employee droning "It's a great day in [wherever] how may I help you?" when you both know it's NOT a great day, you're NOT going to be helped, and neither of you wants to be involved in this transaction. That said, is this really the best use of our time and/or money?

I feel like long generic greetings should be outlawed for everyone. I work in an office, I get like 2 calls a week from the same person I have to say: " XX Bank Commercial Loan Services West, Complex, this is Robert how may I help you?"

Batch just cuts me off halfway through my mandatory greeting now.
