on
this page
, they are referring to a camera crew being photoshopped out of the picture and show before and after, but the before and after appear to be two shots in a sequence and not the exact picture.
Sure, Best Korea is likely to have done the photoshoppy stuff in the others, but this doesn't look like it...

uh, nevermind. I thought they were looking at a different group in the picture.

Compared to the average hight of the rest of the Korean soldiers, he only appears to be only 5'9".

His parents must have been thrilled to know their child would stand out so much in a place like that. Anonymity seems like it would be a key to getting by in NK.

I've heard something about this before, IIRC. Kim Jong-Il would find the tallest men in his country and put them on the DMZ, to awe the SK troops. Sort of like a North Korean version of the
Potsdam Giants
. Or maybe I'm completely mis-remembering this.

An army is generally thought of as more than just one guy, subby. People who think otherwise usually only do so for a very short period of time.

I'm not sure but I think it's the south that only uses soldiers that are 6'3" or taller to man the border at Panmunjom. The south Korean soldiers always look across the border while the best Koreans have two soliders watching each other to keep them form defecting and another with his back to boarder to make sure no one thinks about leaving.

Does North Korea automatically assign its citizens uniforms for occasions such as this? Rarely have I seen a photo or video coming out of this country with people wearing clothing that wasn't a uniform of sorts. The exceptions would probably be the prisoners working on the outskirts wearing rags that have been filmed accidentally as well as the farmers outside the cities. Some interesting video of North Korea on youtubes shot by official foreign visitors who entered through China. Sorry the link isn't handy.

The photo's emergence has led to widespread speculation as to who the soldier might be with, some online commentators suggesting the mystery figure is the 7' 8" tall North Korean basketball star Ri Myung Hun.
That comma is used one word to late. The way it's written it should be two sentences.

So in other words, a Marfan Army? Great idea, until they all die of heart attacks.

Recently watched a special about North Korea, about a humanitarian group going in and doing a thousand eye surgeries. According to the documentary, the South Korean soldiers on the DMZ are all over 5'8".

Basically. Do realize, there's functionally no capitalism. So, nowhere to buy clothes. No individuality. All clothes worn seems issued, or very basic. No patterns, prints, or silkscreen.

No, they are wondering who the photo is with.
