Hey, at least they aren't re-releasing some terrible Star Trek movie in 3D.

Shat vs. Carrie -- funny. This? Not so much.

The only thing I got out of that article is that the Star Trek Fans seem to like Star Trek because it's an inspiring view of the future and the Star Wars Fans seem to like Star Wars because they enjoy dressing up in costumes.

Seriously, I am more of a Star Trek Fan than a Star Wars fan, but couldn't the guy find a bunch of Star Wars fans who don't come off as man-child morons?

/Granted, I stopped reading this about halfway through because I've been in these arguments enough time and I wasn't reading anything new.

The "Star Trek" vs. "Star Wars" arguments quit being fun around 2002.

After that, I think any rational human being could agree that both series were pretty farking stupid.

Star Trek Guy FTA:

It's about on par with a pulpy daytime soap, dripping with a Manichean, good-versus-evil philosophy where the show's secular (Empire vs. Rebellion) and spiritual (Sith vs. Jedi) realms square off with all the subtlety and charm of Rock-'Em-Sock-'Em Robots
Once you've seen the original series "Star Trek" episode "The City on the Edge of Forever," there's no going back. Loosely based on the titular classic Harlan Ellison novel, it was a stark and brutal commentary on the Vietnam War, drug use, peace activism and how good intentions are often the surest path to hell.

It's illustrative of the biggest difference between the two franchises: You can change the name of the characters, locations or even the films themselves in the "Star Wars" series, and it'll still be a modestly goofy and outsized take on the hero's journey monomyth. With Jawas and Ewoks.

"Star Trek" gave us something different: An idealistic vision of what a multicultural (and multispecies) future utopia could look like, and what this speculation tells us about the here and now. It's science fiction as social commentary in the grand tradition of Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Heinlein.

"Star Wars" gave us lasers, lightsabers, and action figures - in other words, science-fantasy. Maybe Harrison Ford said it best after reading a script for "A New Hope," dense with unpronounceable jargon and fantastical characters: "George, you can type this s-, but you sure as hell can't say it."

Me: excellent point, I wonder how the "Star Wars guy" will respond?

Star Wars guy FTA:

Really? You believe for one second that all "Star Wars" gave us is "science fantasy?" Wow, I would never want to see what you thought Einstein gave us. Yeah, I just did that: I compared "Star Wars" to Albert Einstein, he gave us the theory of relativity. If you ask me, that is as much "science fantasy" as anything you see in "Star Wars."

Me: *quizzical dog look* what the FARK is he on about? Is that sentence even English? Does it actually mean anything?

Winnar by a knock-out: Star Trek

Both franchises needed to be out out of their misery in the year 1999, and not touched again for at least 20 years. Also, no going back in time to retcon shiat for either franchise.

That would have been for the best.

Snapper Carr: Takei already covered this (new window)

Indeed he did, and it was mentioned in the article, and I agree:

Let the fans of all science-fiction properties, be they Star Trek or Star Wars, Babylon 5 or Farscape, Firefly or Battlestar Galactica (either of them), or yea, even any other, unnamed franchises, be they nationally syndicated or from the depths of hell that is Syfy's B-movie-of-the-week studio, band together in this, our darkest hour. Let us stand firm in our conviction that Twilight be a bane upon the existence of humanity, let us reach out to the others in the realms of Elves or Dwarves, Hobbits or Men, immortal starship pilots or World War II tank commanders. Let us swear solemn oath that we will not allow this blight to continue. For we should - nay, we MUST! - put aside our differences, bring every gun, sword, magic spell, laser cannon, missile launcher, and bomb to bear on this evil. We ride forth, secure in the knowledge that e'en should we not carry the day, that other men and women will see our example and rise where we fall, sharing the dream of a world...

...a world without sparkly vampires.

So let it be written.

So let it be done.

Bah. Wave the dork flag high, sister. To help encourage you - and to potentially make you seem hotter by comparison, I'll man up and post a couple of pictures of my own costumes. I have no shame. And no self-esteem either, but that's a whole 'nother story.

First, Jedi Knight costume, accepted as canon by the Rebel Legion.

Second, an older picture of my Viper jock smock. (I freely admit, I cannot fit into this thing anymore.)

And finally, a bonus picture of me, on deployment with the US Army, taking my unit patches off for a moment and putting on Stargate SG-1 insignia. Because that's how I roll.

Doctor Who is better at being science fiction than Star Wars. Doctor Who has a lot of things better than Star Wars. Doctor Who has wonderful music over its many series. But Doctor Who's theme is not better than any of Star Wars' themes.

=) Are you red?

My criteria for better is I would listen to the song outside of the film/TV show. I have listened to and enjoyed Duel of the Fates without watching the movie; I think John Williams is farking brilliant at creating a memorable, recognizable, and mood setting theme song.

BUT my DW #9 ringtone trounces my husband's Disco Star Wars theme ringtone and I couldn't see myself rocking out to the Star Wars movie opener. Then again, I fully admit that Star Wars isn't my thing so I don't get the jizzies when it comes on which I'm sure is part of it. Doctor Who and The Venture Bros. generally give me the jizzies so the music elicits a reaction before the show even starts.

/I enjoy this because my husband finds it amusing to get me agitated about things
