I just watched the replay of that game when I woke up this morning (work night shift and, even though I am on vacation, still wake up in the middle of the night). Fun game to watch but I thought I was in some sort of time warp because I thought I had already seen the score as the numbers kept rising.

Lighten up, Francis. They don't all have to be 9-6 punt contests. That was an incredibly entertaining game.

Entertaining? That was the reality show if football games, after realizing their defenses just sucked that bad and it wasn't the result of good offenses is what made it boring.

There is nothing to lighten up from, the game was a big 'meh' from me.

Hey, I remember at the start of the game during one of those cut-aways to a basketball game that was tied 76-76 heading into Double-Overtime, the announcers said that it was likely that the score would turn out similar. Weird.

I agree that the game was pretty boring, but I prefer a good defense to no defense at all.

Considering the responses here, it appears that the NFL is headed in the right direction by banning defense all together.

As a WSU Coug fan my observations:
1) Keith Price is amazing! Wow, just wow.
2) Robert Griffin is not really ready for the NFL
3) How the hell is Baylor ranked so high with no defense.
4) Huskies, where was that offense all season.

5)Wow, if they don't fire Holt after that game, then they deserve everything they get from here on out. That was just disturbing.

Yeah you see how well that worked for the NBA, from a ratings high in the late 80s to a free fall in the 2000s now they are all gushing because of a slight uptick in their ratings that is still over 10 points lower than the average game used to get.

They are trying go get rid of the old adage "defense wins championships" to appease the idiots.

And no I'm not trolling here, I don't mind high scoring games if the defenses show up up but that was embarrassing for them. I like what herm edwards said this morning, "after a team puts up 30 in one half, the defense is allowed an extra player" he'll both teams almost put up 30 in a quarter. That was beyond a poorly played defensive game.

If you find that entertaining then just go watch the madden game highlights on youtube, that wasn't a good game last night it was madden on easy level.

That game was an absolute disgrace. I was personally embarrassed for both teams. It got to the point where I was just rooting for the clock to keep running. Washington was terrible and Baylor was slightly less terrible. What a clusterfark.

If Nick Holt (defensive coordinator, Washington) wasn't fired on the spot after the game and forced to find his own way home, something is wrong with the program. The defense was awful all year and this just capped it off.

Exactly, just like most called the bama/lsu a couple of bad offenses this was like two really horrible defenses playing but worse because nobody stopped anything, at least the offenses got on the other side of the field.

the nfl could just get rid defenses and let special teams defend, or have offenses stay on the field and defend if they turn over on downs

or just install random obstacles that pop up from the ground, turn it into wipeout, etc.

steamingpile: Entertaining? That was the reality show if football games, after realizing their defenses just sucked that bad and it wasn't the result of good offenses is what made it boring.

The better metaphor in my opinion would be calling this a Michael Bay football game.

Let's be real here. Baylor was 111th overall in total defense this year, Washington was 103rd. Baylor had the 2nd overall offense, Washington 38th. You pretty much knew both teams were going to be in the high 30's/low 40's before the ball was even snapped. That it went to another level is just icing on the cake.

Yes, the defenses were a travesty, but so what? We got to see an exciting game that was in doubt until the very final minutes; we got to see two big momentum swings in the first half (Baylor jumping out, Washington putting up 28 straight), we saw Baylor fall down big but claw their way back, then Washington come back themselves, we got to see the Heisman trophy winner and probably the #2-5 (depending on how the draft order shakes out) pick in the draft put on a show, and we got to see an even better performance from Price.

I guess I just don't really see why a good football game has to fall within a certain point range or have a requisite number of punts/turnovers/whatever. Was it entertaining to watch? Did you see something you're unlikely to see again for quite some time? What, it would have been better if Baylor had OU's defense and won by 30 points?

nmiguy: RG3 is the man. Wow.

Based on those terrible announcers last night, you'd think RG3 had cured cancer, the common cold, led Christmas services at the Vatican, delivered food to the poor, taught Tebow to walk on water, rescued children from a burning building, and won the game singlehandedly, with no receivers or other backs.

jayhawk88: I guess I just don't really see why a good football game has to fall within a certain point range or have a requisite number of punts/turnovers/whatever.

A game can be high-scoring and still good. Some players are just impossible to stop, and they're a joy to watch. But you can still see defenses executing. . . and it not mattering. I've seen linemen seal three defenders at once, tight ends abuse secondaries, running backs dragging three defenders with them, receivers so fast and shifty that no one can keep up with them, QBs threading a split-second window no bigger than the diameter of the football itself with a DE's paw in his face. They make games exciting. They'll get their 30+ points.

When two competitive FBS teams combine for 120 points, though, defenses aren't executing. That's a day of horrific assignment breakdowns. Jarred Salubi got 100 yards on FIVE carries and he was the THIRD-highest rusher that game FFS.

It's not the score; it's the sloppy play.

2011-12-30 10:14:31 AM
It is one thing to have a bad defense. I mean, kids get out of position or greatly underestimate the speed of their assigned guy, etc. Or some kids just aren't that smart and don't intuitively follow the play as it develops. That is where coaching comes in. Be here, if X happens, do Y, kind of stuff. But after you get burned repeatedly, by the same guys running the same plays, you have to think that the defensive coaches are just useless. That goes for both teams in this game. That wasn't football, it was a track meet.

You will never hear me chanting SEC or talking about how it feels like we won because our conference won, fark that shiat, if we dont win I hope every other SEC team loses.

jayhawk88: The better metaphor in my opinion would be calling this a Michael Bay football game.

Yeah, thats what I meant, all flash, zero substance.

This game was entertaining on the same level as the dancing shows, american idol, and transformers films, its football who just like to cheer for points scored and booed when teams have to punt the ball.

That's it exactly. It's one thing if big offensive plays happen because of great efforts -- spectacular catches, forceful runs, dominant blocking -- but this was a game full of missed tackles, passes to wide-open receivers due to blown coverages, long runs due to lost containment by the D-ends, and so on. The Baylor drive at the end of the first half was infuriating: "hey, let's just play 20 yards off the receivers and let them pick up 10-15 yards and get out of bounds on every play!" And at times in the second half it looked like Washington's defense had just quit. If you watch the replay of that last Baylor run, you'll see how the linebackers just kind of moseyed up to the line, leaned against the offensive linemen a little and stood aside, leaving the safety to go basically one-on-one. Story of the game right there.

The Huskies made a bowl game this year despite having, possibly, the worst defense they've ever put on the field. They gave up 50 or more 3 times this season, 40 or more an unbelievable 7 times in 13 games. And they still would've probably won 9 if Price had been healthy all year. Nick Holt is paid $650k/season and has had 3 years now to get his guys into the system. We could get 2 better defensive coordinators for what we're paying him.

I know he's your boy and everything Sark, but with a defense that gives up 40 points or more only 4 times in a season, you could have a 10-win team and be thinking about a real bowl game, not the "Meh, Stanford and Oregon are gone, let's throw a dart at what left between UCLA, UW, ASU, Cal and Utah" Bowl.
