Someone pushed over the cutouts. It must be hardened criminals. Call the SWAT team.

Or maybe it was the wind, call the NWS.

FTA: The law bans teaching materials that reflect poorly on...particular religions.

That's a toughie. Won't merely stating the facts concerning them also reflect poorly?

Wow, what an incredible display of vandalism.

I mean, I understand it's quite coincidental that the "normal" couple was left standing while the other two were down...but the wind over Xmas was incredible. Did anyone check that it might, in fact ONLY be a coincidence? Maybe the "normal" cutouts were better anchored or screened from the wind by something else?

Or are they worried it's a message from god? [OMINOUS MUSIC]

Disappointing, I was hoping that the Baby Jesus had been replaced by a cave troll.

FTFA: In 1993, the church made a decision to be a "reconciling congregation" which welcomes gay, lesbian and trasngender members.

It's refreshing to see a church that's willing to accept anybody's money.

Doesn't it all even out if they decide to leave it 'vandalized' and call it an evolving art piece?

I thought it was an interesting article on the church. But everyone here is reacting like the church is demanding that the federal government send in the armed helicopters to send the perpetrators to hell or to amend the constitution to prevent sign tipping (say - like an evangelical organization would do). They aren't. They just observed that not everyone is tolerant and most likely just put back up the display and went back to their business.

Find the christian bigot who did did this and nail their ass to the wall! (Figuratively, of course.)

Church officials came in before the Christmas morning service to find that someone had pushed over the two gay couples and left the heterosexual couple standing.

Awww... that's so cute. The rednecks tried to make a think.

Those Methodists and their tolerance. Can't have none of that here.

I keep hearing that God hates gays... maybe someone should be questioning Him?

Since He is all-present and all-knowing, so I know damned good and well that He was in the neighborhood when it happened and even if He didn't actually do it, He has names.

This one does because it doesn't preach enough hate. The other religious people have turned on them ... with hate of course.

When it's one of the churches preaching tolerance and actually questioning whether gays might actually be kind of okay people, yeah, they can be.

How can you tell male and female based solely on silhouette? Sexisim!

(also notice that they only defaced the man/man couple, not the woman/woman one.)

Claremont is hardly redneck country. The area kinda epitomizes the leftist college town, although lots of wealthy yuppies like to visit to shop at the small stores there. It makes them feel better about themselves when they patronize the little boutique shops that blanket the downtown.

Probably a couple of drunken college students.

Soon Right Away: I think every nativity scene is pretty gay.
That goes to the root of various groups' philosophical justifications for declaring gayness wrong-most also condemn heterosexual sex (unless they give written permission for it).

It wasn't vandals, it was kids. I think about all those years that I rearranged people's Christmas lights to say "EAT ME." Hell, just recently I set up their wire frame lighted deer so there was a daisy chain of ass sniffing.

I think it is a douchey thing to do, but isn't the prosecution of hate crimes awfully close to policing thoughts? This could have just been some random-arse teenagers breaking shiat, for all we know at this point.

They called the police. Because their cut outs were tipped over.

I am a vocal opponent of hate crimes for just this reason. Prosecute the dorks for trespass, destruction of property and even burglary if you like. Not for what may or may not have been inside their pointy heads.

Hate crime = thought crime.

An unusual nativity display at a Claremont church that portrayed gay couples was vandalized over the weekend in an incident authorities are investigating as a hate crime.

Never seen an act of really simplistic vandalism covered under hate crime legislation. Is this being pursued with possible additional consequences resultant from the target of the act or is this simply such a misused phrase anymore what we mean is a crime which involves hating a particular group? I also do not see what the damages are; parts of the display simply appear tipped over but not broken or otherwise defaced.

Thread over. CarriePrejean + ignacio + Gyrfalcon + Begoggle = summary of why the fark this is stupid. The church in question is as much to blame as the cops who arrived and wrote it up as a hate crime.

Under such silliness, the church should be equally culpable for a hate crime by defacing Christmas tradition using that line of thinking.

Well, we do have a long legal tradition of considering motive, as evident in the difference between 1st-degree homicide and 2nd-degree homicide, but my gut reaction is that this is different. I just can't think of any good reason why.

Trust me, there is absolutely nothing you could do to get the United Methodist Church to stop taking your money. Or asking for it constantly.
