Tell you the truth, shark fin soup isn't all that great anyway. There really isn't much of a taste to it.

Shark fin soup is definitely not good enough to balance the harm it is doing to shark populations. Not even close. I have no problem with it being banned.

and no more "happy hour" in Utah.

was shocked to know there was a Happy Hour in Utah to begin with.

Sea turtle soup is still okay, right?

That's what I've heard. Isn't a shark fin basically cartilage?

Rather than ban it, though, they should just slap a hefty tax on it.

/I like taxing stupid people.

The article mentions 40,000 new laws in 50 states. They should make a law that for every two new laws on the books, they have to get rid of one old law -- and no sneaking the old law back in by fudging with the words a little bit.

Sure, the number of laws would still increase over time, but some of the worthless, outdated cruft would be cleared out.

I'm vehemently against things like foie gras bans, but this... I'm OK with.

//ban is for a different reason
//more along the lines of bans on whale meat

Indeed. I'm not a fan of foie gras or what they do to the birds, but at least they aren't being driven to extinction by essentially the equivalent of being caught, having their wings cut off, and then being thrown back into their environments. Shark-finning is devastating a lot of shark populations around the world. :(

One adds lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and disabled people, to a list of cultural groups whose contributions to the development of the United States must be portrayed in social science course material in public schools. The law bans teaching materials that reflect poorly on gays or particular religions. Already, opponents have begun seeking a ballot initiative to repeal the law.

The most annoying new state law in California is the ban on liquor sales in self-checkouts. This is going to make the already unbearable lines at my local Safeway much, much worse.

(Mostly because the only thing worth buying there is the booze.)

Does it make that much of a difference? Every time I see someone buying liquor in the self checkout it takes forever and a day for the self checkout prefect to notice them and punch in their approval. it is worst when the purchaser makes the mistake of scanning their alcohol first, preventing them from scanning or bagging any of their other items during that extended wait.

•Production, distribution and sale of beer to which caffeine has been added is prohibited.

...so California believes the canard that alcohol and caffeine is a lethal combination, a lie probably distributed by Anheuser-Busch and/or Red bull because Four Loko was severely cutting in on their sales. Of course it's a lethal combination! I mean, look at all the Jack and Coke deaths we have year after year!

They should have instead made self-checkout a privilege, not a right. You'd need to take a basic competency exam and get a license in order to use self-checkout. Seriously cannot express the amount of RAGE I've experience behind incompetent nincompoops who would have saved time by waiting in line and letting a competent checkout girl do the scanning for them.

California will be the new state haven for illegal immigrants once other states follow suit with Alabama and Georgia laws.

The droves of tax-paying citizens leaving the state to get political asylum in other states will produce a sucking sound so loud it will drown out the bass of the illegally modified low-riders

As if they're going to stop serving Shark Fin soup in San Francisco Chinatown as of Jan 1. It will just become an off-the-menu item for Chinese patrons only.

The Safeway by my house doesn't work like that. If you scan a "restricted" item, you just have to show your ID before you check out. Or, if the checkout guy recognizes you (or you look old enough) they'll hit the button and you don't have to do a thing.

Have you ever had a 4Loko? Not even close to a jack and coke.

Those things deserve to be banned. Something about them really messes with your system to the point that they are worse than mixing a vodka and a bit of Red Bull.

Anyone who eats shark fin soup should have their appendages chopped off while they're still alive and dumped into the ocean to die - just like what happens to the sharks.

All shark fin soup everywhere should be banned. I can't believe they're allowed to serve it anywhere in this country.

I wasn't commenting on the quality, I was merely commenting on the combination.

Sort of like people who predict the apocalypse every couple of years.

In Arkansas, clinics that perform 10 or more non-surgical abortions a month must be licensed by the state and be subject to inspections.

And they won't give out licenses or have asinine building requirements such as making the door 1 foot high by 1 foot wide and it have exactly 10.88975873450034640 inches of swinging clearance and/or force clinics to have a fire occupancy no greater than 1 person less than the minimum number of medical personnel required to perform said abortion.

I wish the non-crazies would put asinine building codes on churches just o get back to these asshats.

Just an FYI:

23.5 ounce can of 4Loko has 135mg of caffeine.
A 12 ounce can of Coke as 34.5mg of caffeine (or 67.6mg for 23.5 ounces).
A standard Jack and Coke is served in an "old fashioned glass" over ice and contains about 6 ounces of Coke.

I agree with the ban on shark fin soup. That said, why is California so retarded? Chico California made it against the law to detonate a nuclear weapon within city limits, punishable by a $500 fine.

Speaking of weird state laws (although not a new one), why the hell doesn't New Jersey let you pump your own gas?

I was pondering this on a recent drive across the Garden State. The only possible explanations I could think of are: (1) the state thinks its residents are such imbeciles that they can't even be trusted to pull the handle on the gas pump without blowing themselves up, or (2) it's an make-work program to artificially create jobs for thousands of gas station attendants.

Gotta scare off the terrorists. You gotta figure that after they spend all their money on their nuclear weapon and transporation they will not be able to afford a $500 fine. So, they will go detonate it elsewhere. Seems like a very well thought out and rational law.

So easy, even an Oregonian or Californian can do it.

"Some 40,000 laws were passed"

Remember citizen, ignorance of the law is no excuse. Disobeying a lawful order is illegal. If you believe you aren't a slave, it is just because you haven't done anything to draw your masters' attentions yet.

"New laws requiring voters to present photo identification will go into effect in Kansas, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas, the legislatures conference said. Supporters of the law say it prevents fraud; opponents say it will make it harder for minorities and seniors to cast ballots."

"Other states adopting E-Verify requirements include Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia."

Tennessee is going full-retard. (sigh)

I thought "poll taxes" we're illegal. WTF?
