For surveillance it seems like a shiatty tool, usually helicopters can't fly for that long. Seems like a blimp or something would be better.

I think the Mosquito would make a good platform.
Mount a couple of guns on that baby and it turns into a Wasp. Get a dozen of them and you have a swarm great for urban applications.

The Marine Core deployed the K-Max unmanned cargo helicopter in Afghanistan in November. So far seems to be doing well.

Except that standard choppers are notoriously vulnerable to small arms fire, and
that looks to be even less durable.

DNRTF, but to be fair... Probably to a certain extent. You know, if we know about it it's already been around for years, etc. I know that doesn't explain when this article in particular was written, but if their source is some technical spec manual for media use that WAS written some time ago, that would make sense.

I bought a cheap one a few months ago. It worked great for about the 30 seconds which it held a charge, then it just sort of hovered about half a centimeter off the ground until it died.
Seriously, the charge wouldn't even last for a minute. I think it cost $60. It got returned.
It was supposed to keep me and and my cat entertained for hours.

As far as the military knows, a 2 megapixel camera phone still costs about $10,000 each. Anything better starts to get a bit expensive.

Be nice to see the specs on how long it stays on station...however helicopters do refuel mid-air via probes.
DARPA did some autonomous refueling test a few years ago for unmanned fighters...pretty sure they are working on it because I really can't see some highly gifted engineers doing face palms years later...asking why they didn't think about aerial refueling...

This may be over a year old, but I think that most phones sold aren't smartphones. Or phones that have any significant features whatsoever.

From what I've heard about Jan Michael Vincent a drone probably would have come in handy during filming. Apparently if he wasn't passed out unconscious he was sleeping off a hangover most of the time.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron." - Dwight D Eisenhower

I think they should be cheaper to buy and use then real helicopters since they can be made smaller and carry less weight. If so, the local police of big cities would love the civilian version of this when it's available. It's going to be interesting to see if the "US vs. Jones" case decided next July will have any effect. When does general surveillance of public stop and tracking an individual begins once automatic tracking and facial recognition is widely available?

The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots.

Modern jet fighters don't dogfight anymore. They shoot each other from 50 miles away. Suggestion: Google "F-18" (AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile w/ 230mi range) and "Tomahawk missile" (1,500mi range).
