It's funny because Denny's has low-quality food. Also racist waitstaff.

I suspect the police officer is lying.
Let's just get that out of the way.
Not saying this dude didn't deserve to get shot, but those facts match up exactly with what a cop would say to absolve himself of any guilt.
Maybe I wouldn't be suspicious immediately if cops weren't all such lying bastards?

So a pig is at a Dennys after a late night on the town when he and his brother & cousin pick a fight with some other patrons.
One of the guys the pig started the fight with "threatened" him with a knife and fork and the pig shot him repeatedly?????
phark the police.

Nothing unusual about this story. Off duty cop steps outside to retreive his
gun
cell phone. Hilarity ensues. Right.

If there were two Denny's in the town he could have said "Let's not go to that one, let's go to the good one"

But its important to remember that the off-duty officer fired more than once, hitting the man twice.

I worked the overnight shift at Denny' for a month in college. It was a madhouse.

Funny that you mention that. I was the host and we had a section in the back of the place and one in front. I was to rotate seating, place a group in the back section, then one in the front. Well this was the overnight shift, and nearly everyone who came in was completely trashed and wanted to argue. Any attempt at seating black people in the back section was met with comments about racism, so I eventually just started seating them all in the front, and seating white people in the back. I never got another complaint about racism after that. I really don't give a fark about the fact that I enforced segregation while working there. I just wanted to get through the night and get my paycheck. I didn't want any problems, and I worked my hardest to avoid them.

The Denny's just down the road from my old apartment used to serve beer.

Why do people on Fark always think that cops are lying all the time just to cover their asses?
Oh wait, it's because they are are cops and ARE most likely lying all the time just to cover their asses.

I have reason to believe that everyone involved was drunk as hell. Why else would anyone be at a Dennys at 3am?
I don't buy this cop's story. Smells like baby-food if you ask me.

Expecting good food from Denny's is like a guy walking out of a whorehouse saying: "I just didn't feel loved."

My son loves Denny's.
Myself, I like eating there. It's not the GREATEST place in the world, but it's not that bad.
Though I wouldn't want to be shot there....

True fact: Denny's that serve beer are always better than Denny's that don't. Beyond the fact that beer makes everything better, there is also clearly a corporate policy that slots the stronger managers to the these joints.

Oh and BOTH knives belonged to the victim? Yeah right. I'm betting one belonged to the cop's brother or someone else in his group.

Lopez, a five-year HPD veteran, fired at least two shots into the air.
That right there makes it so the cop should be suspended. Any person that actually farking paid attention in Gun Safety class knows that you never do this.
/Alcohol was probably involved on both sides.

Well... IDK. It's better than actually, ya know, shooting somebody. Mind you some of these young thugs play too many video games and think bullets don't hurt so bad.
I think Chris Rock had a bit about that. How in the movies people get shot and then go on to give calm sentimental speeches when the reality is more like "F*CK!! You shot me!!! OOOOOWWWWWW F*CK OWOWOWOWOWOW GET IT OUT GET IT OUT!!!!"

So, "off-duty" just means "until I decide to shoot an innocent bystander" then? Nice.

I used to tend bar overnight (lots of bars are 24 hours around here), and if there was anything I dreaded more than cocaine cowgirl skank strippers trying to hustle money for a new alternator on her unemployed boyfriend's Camaro, it was drunken off-duty cops. Seriously. And I'm typically not a cop-basher. I recognize that their jobs will often breed some resentment and deep cynicism, but that doesn't mean you have to a 'roided asshole everywhere you go.
It gets difficult to defend cops from people calling them "pigs" (as in this thread) when at least one a week shows up, trashes your place, and then demands a cop discount (we didn't have one). As a result, my lifelong sympathetic attitude about cops was badly damaged.
Bonus - it's the New Orleans Police Department. One of the worst in the civilized world in terms of being out of control. They're excellent at handling logistics like Mardis Gras and Super Bowls, but don't you dare look one in the eyes the wrong way.

Yikes! I've been a bouncer on occasion and generally helped out around my local pubs but I realized that I could never work full time at a bar. I've seen it consume far too many of my friends.
One night I was having a smoke outside the pub and some nutter came in and said he had a gun. I yanked him out of the bar and he started going into his knapsack. I screamed at the group behind me to get down. Turns out all he had were paper towels he had obviously been stealing from bars on the strip. Well someone called the cops. All of a sudden two cops come BOLTING down the street, grabbed him, SLAMMED him against a brick wall and threw him hard to the ground headfirst.
I will never forget the sound of that guy's head hitting the concrete. I know they can't f*ck around if they think someone has a gun but damn... that was one of the worst take downs I've ever seen.

You really charge Officers full price in New Orleans?
As far as I've observed, it's always a 100% discount everywhere here in California. Makes it interesting to try to stay in business near a large police station, I imagine.

A lot of places will fire cops for doing that. That said, happens all the time and everywhere. Most places, though, they're forbidden to do so.
/ I will happily give my local HPD some coffee or whatnot if they are around
// farking drug dealers that get the cops called a couple times a week live diagonally across the street now, but they haven't sufficient evidence to go in and are, as they should be, not of the 'make shiat up to get a warrant' type.

Coffee shops and such give freebies, and bars that serve food will typically knock a few items off the bill, but no, there was no discount for those 15 Miller Lites just because you flashed a badge and expected us to be impressed. We're in business to make money and not slobbing knobs simply because the motto is "protect and serve." Hell, that even described my job, and I was armed only with a Louisville Slugger and no backup.
Giving a normal cop a free sandwich at noon is one thing, but we weren't about to toss free drinks for some perceived level of protection. That badge didn't mean dick to me if unless you were arresting someone who tried to rob the place.

If a cop has even the slightest reason to presume a gun, even a libtard like me condones whatever non-lethal violence it takes to subdue the suspect and assess later. What we have in New Orleans is a systemic culture of unwarranted deaths. As mentioned above, I understand that being a cop in a notorious town can lead to extreme cynicism, but FFS we just convicted multiple cops of gunning down unarmed folks trying to cross a bridge on foot in the aftermath of Katrina. Shortly after that incident they beat an elderly man on Bourbon St. And the torrent of bad news just keeps coming every day, and the new Chief (same as the old Chief) has offered nothing more thant talk. No wonder the fed is always down here rooting through the NOPD. I think it's cute that people in Chicago think they have the dubious honor of the most corruption and violence.
Life in a wild town can get to your nerves. But if you can't stand the heat and keep your wits about you, maybe you have no business being a cop. Or go to the 'burbs and write traffic tickets. That job has dangers too (some crackhead pulls a gun when asked for a license) but it's nowhere near the bullshiat Orleans Parish street cops see every day.
But Parish or not, cops are supposed to be stewards of the community and not a threat. And that's why I would bristle when some drunk NOPD twatwaffle DEMANDED a discount, or my silence about his girlfriend. I don't owe you shiat, pal.
