If the Russian government swears that radiation levels are normal, well, that's good enough for me.

"Radiation levels are normal" which really means off the scale, which is normal for Russkie nuke subs.

Nothing to see here, oh no.

This is Russia, there are rules there. The submarine douses you, I believe.

Ahhh the Yekaterinburg... perhaps naming subs after towns where there was a military facility anthrax release accident (new window) isn't the best plan...

Captain Tom Dodge wanted for questioning, in what has become more widely known as the "Murmansk Brushing Incident". Last seen heavily inebriated at a local tattoo parlor.

According to the article, it happened in the shipyard. This happens a lot because there's usually a lot of a) welding and b) flamable stuff lying around.

That's why you post a damn fire watch.

They can't give in to the urge to name things after former leaders. You think too many things here are named Reagan? Try picking out which submarine Putin, or between sub, carrier and fuel tender Putin is the referent.

Being familiar with both subs and shipyards, I find myself asking why the yard was using wooden scaffolding in the drydock. Most shipyards here use metal pipe scaffolding with aluminum footboards.

I also wonder whether or not the sub is resting on wooden keel blocks such as we use here. If so, the Russians may have some serious damage to the boat when the keel blocks collapse in the fire- dropping the 500-meter sub onto the floor of the drydock. Possible damage to the sonar dome, screws, outer hull, sail, radar masts, periscopes, missile and torpedo hatches, etc. could effectively kill the boat.

Here's another thought: I realize Russia doesn't have any warm-water ports to operate from, but putting a billion-dollar asset in drydock in December ... in Murmansk ... doesn't appear to have been well thought out. Among other problems, the Russian winter has been known to kill people and equipment, and this drydock seems to be less than well-insulated against weather from the pictures in TFA. Welding may not have started the fire. The shipyard crew may have had burn barrels going to keep off the chill while they worked ... on the wooden scaffolding.

I'm not particularly worried about radiation release unless the actual reactor compartment was on fire. The reactor was almost certainly off-line before the boat went into drydock. The missiles would also most likely have been removed long before.

Not looking forward to the mishap report when it eventually comes out. The Russian ones (new window) make for really depressing reading.

How do we know they're not trolling us? It could be that once more, they play their dangerous game, a game of chess against their old adversary - The American Navy. For forty years, their fathers before them and their older brothers played this game and played it well.
