I guess using words to describe the pictures and perhaps a little history would have been too much trouble.

I think it's funny that the idea is it's fine to hit the livestock as long as you hit them 20 feet further away. Maybe it's more amusing for the crew in the locomotive to have it further forward so they can witness the moment of slaughter.

BTW, that little mustache on the front of a steam locomotive is called a "Cow catcher."

Every once in a while a link is greenlit for no reason. This is one of those times.

/although it would be interesting to be "guy who bangs on a cymbal to scare cows off train tracks" as a career

I thought that was the point of the cow catcher. You hit an animal and it gets pushed violently out of the way with little damage to the train.

In the old days, railroads had a steak in keeping livestock off the tracks. With the smaller size of the engines, the train would've derailed and then everybody would have to hoof it.

My example of an engineering failure is the style of locomotive pilot called the "Cowcatcher".

Failure? Hell yeah! Never has one of them come back home proclaiming, "I caught a cow!".

// got nothin'

shanteyman: railroads had a steak

Was that intentional? Because it's funny as Hell...

Yes, they had a stake in it, but these are just stupid, overly complicated inventions, the cow catcher is simple and effective, yet not as interesting as these, that's for sure...

Obvious answer is obvious.

Bet you never had to clean up after a locomotive rolled over a cow, or a person. Even when the pilot works, usually a leg or so gets under the wheels, the animal being so close and the wheels being so many. Damn what a mess. Small cars are bad too. Looks like a battered can of tomato sauce.

Look both ways and live you fools!

That little booger right there is actually a snow plow. But I'm sure seeing it interact with a cow could prove to be amusing.

Use this one if want Hamburger.
