Is it farm raised? There have been reports that farm raised fish (salmon especially) are much lower in omega 3 than their wild counterparts. If you're interested, here's a starting point of some kind (not enough time for me to go look for something more... accredited).

If fish is such great brain food, why are there no cats named Einstein?

/ for that matter, why did Einstein ignore the "I before E except after C" rule? ...... Weird.
// yeah, I know. Lame joke.

good to know.

Taking multi-vitamin pills 'does nothing for our health'

I've been enjoying purslane, which grows as a weed in my garden. Per Wikipedia, "Purslane contains more omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid in particular) than any other leafy vegetable plant." Free, delicious, and healthy -- what could be better?

Uh oh, hope zombies didn't read the above. My brain isn't that good, honestly.

I love me some omega-3s...mostly because I love the four main fish they're found in...but it annoys me that I can eat a TON of that...and still not get nearly as much as someone taking a supplement.

Polunsaturated fatty acids (found in fish oil)

Are good for you, your body uses them to build neurons (like those in your brain)

In the aquaculture business fish oils and live foods are proven to improve fish development and survival rates (probably by helping with neve development)

Why would people be any different?

DHA (Docosahexanoic Acid) is a good one to look up if you want to know more.

/Did my Thesis on this kind of stuff back in grad school, i think these articles get recycled a couple of times every year.

But you get more mercury!

Ummm... aren't there a lot of Omega-3's in canola oil? Which is a lot cheaper than fish? Not only that, some fish are only 1% fat by weight. Food cooked in canola oil should have much more Omega-3 content than the average fish.

AHHH thank you wikipedia. Canola Oil is a good source of alpha-Linolenic acid, which the body can convert to Eicosapentaenoic acid or Docosahexaenoic acid. But the fish has the latter two already, no need for your body to convert them.

Our diet USED to be full of omega 3 fats, which are healthy is a wide variety of ways. With the advent of CAFO livestock, the balance has been tipped over to omega 6 fats with disastrous consequences.

CSB time:

Before it was popular, I used to take many fish oil pills. My poop always smelled like dead fish and was slippery.

Yep. Fish omega 3s are way better. Even though Canola and Flax are loaded with Omega 3s, the kind found in fish is way better.

Omega 3 != multivitamins.

What? Salmon (without the fat removed), sardines, mackeral and herring have way more Omega 3s than fish oil does (if you take the recommended amount on the bottle). One can of sardines has, on average, 1.5g of omega 3s, which is about 5 fish oil pills.

I read somewhere that zombies actually prefer stupid brains.

2011-12-29 05:31:35 PM
I started taking Omega 3 some time back primarily for "brain" reasons (anxiety/variable character/hopelessly bad memory), plus the benefits for other organs such as the liver and heart and so on, it just seems like a no-brainer.

It makes it easier when you consider that you're really just helping to rectify a nutritional deficiency brought on by the modern diet. It's the only thing I take in pill form for anything, if I can help it, and only because I know I'll never really adjust my diet properly to make it work in a more natural fashion.

I just started supplementing my cats with salmon oil rich in that stuff. Rise of the Planet of teh Kittehs or death by mercury?

I take fish oil a couple hours before I go to bed. It knocks me out cold for some reason.

The best source of vitamin D is actually the sun. About 10-15 minutes a day on your skin is enough. Don't take supplements with vitamin D (or any other fat soluble like A, E, K) because it is possible to get too much.

Yep, it's the best way to "garden"! I eat my dandelions and chicory too.

And this. People are so silly with their buying of food and vitamins. Being cheap is actually much healthier, and more fun. :-)

Umm, guys, that's pronounced "omega MINUS three". That little hypheny-looking thing between the Greek letter and the Arabic numeral is not, in fact, a hyphen, but a minus sign. It all comes down to where the double bond farthest from the carboxyl group starts: alpha is the first carbon after the carboxyl, beta the second, gamma the third, et cetera. Omega is the accepted term for "the carbon atom farthest from the carboxyl group in a long chain fatty acid". So, "omega-3" is 3 carbons from the end. Thanks for playing. There will be some lovely parting gifts for you all.
