So, parties are now illegal in Alabama?

2011-12-29 12:19:09 PM
This is clearly an outrage. No one should ever be allowed to purchase that quantity of Bud Light.

She'd have been fine if she hadn't turned on that getaway music.

there goes friday night...that's only 7 kegs of beer.

/it's probably only illegal because bama wanted the tax revenue.

I wonder how long 56 gallons of beer will stay good in the evidence locker. hurr.

Street value of the alcohol was estimated at 1.2 million dollars, so that was a good bust!

That is a dry county. She would have been fine if it was in the trunk and not the back seat.

Not sure I could fit 112 gallons of anything in my trunk. I would have to drink off the rest till it fit.

There are more succinct ways of getting blitzed... they call it moonshine...

So it's somehow bad to have it in the backseat but okay to have it in the trunk?

Man, laws are stupid.

For reference, a standard beer keg is 15.5 gallons, give or take a bit. Seems a bit inefficient to get eight kegs of beer in bottle containers.

Folks, she wasn't arrested for having 112 gallons of beer. This is Alabama. She was arrested for being Mexican-looking and having an illegal-name and having 112 gallons of beer.

15 Cases of 40s does not equal 112 gallons of beer.

For those of you keeping score at home:

12 (Number of Bottles in a case of Bud Light) X 40 (oz) = 480 oz

480 oz X 15 (cases) = 7,200 oz

7,200 oz / 128 (oz in a gallon) = 56

There were assuming, incorrectly, that a case of 40s has 24 bottles. Which it doesn't.

Because People in power are Stupid: I wonder if the Alcohol laws are some sort of voter suppression.

No, just dumb ass fundies. For some reason, certain fundy Christian types, Baptists mostly but others too, have decided that alcohol is evil. So they do what they can to eliminate it and that can arise as things like dry counties. Now you can't prohibit people from fetching it can taking it home from other places, but you prohibit its sales in your county, and restrict transport to a degree.

In terms of voter grouping and that thing it is because people who are not fundies often avoid those areas. They are not interested int eh dry county bullshiat and so go live somewhere else. As you notice it isn't as though you have to go that far, you can work in a dry county and live in a wet one with little problem.

Maybe the issue was in transporting across state lines?

I work for a Methodist church in which we are not allowed to have alcohol on the premises or at church functions. I went to an Episcopal Christmas Eve service where the pastor hosted a party afterward and I enjoyed an awful lot of vodka. Awesome people but I don't like the 'high church' worship style otherwise I might switch.

That . . . and it was forties, which you cannot legally buy in Alabama.

It could also have something to do with the amount. I think each person in the vehicle is only allowed a certain volumn of beer and liquor. Maybe she just needed more passengers.

40-ounce bottles are illegal in Alabama, meaning the state didn't get its cut of the sale. Beer cannot be sold (or apparently even had) in containers larger than 16 ounces, excepting kegs. It's one of the completely farked up liquor laws Free the Hops (new window) is trying to get changed.

Who the hell travels to Tennessee to buy Bud Light? Maybe the arrest was not because of the 112 gallons of beer, but because it was Bud Light.

Alcohol is forbidden in al-Abama.

2011-12-29 02:34:55 PM
When we were kids in WI my parents would buy 50 cases of beer from a friend that owned a bar and throw a party every summer. Picking up 50 cases of beer can be a pain in the ass so they would send me or my sisters to the bar with the cash and a note saying "my son/daughter is hauling the beer for parents. Any questions, call..." for us to give to the cops in case we got pulled over. This was around 2000. They actually called the cops beforehand to make sure it was cool, the cops said to write the note.

The old saying in those parts is that every election year the Ministers and the Moonshiners team up to make sure the dry counties stay dry

My in-laws worked for years to make their town a wet one. Every time it was on the ballot, they'd receive threatening phone calls, hate mail, you name it. Sometimes, they'd even recognize the voice on the other end of the line ("Dale, is that you?").

Their town just became wet during the last election. Because, of course, nobody in town had a fully stocked beer fridge with which to supply beverages to the annual block party or Christmas party or lawn mowing.

Too bad that article is almost a year old. Hopefully they'll have more luck in 2012, but I have my doubts here in the buckle of the Bible Belt.

The liquor stores in my town love the fact that several neighboring counties are dry; their sales are quadrupled from what they would otherwise be.
