"If the Eagles don't cover this weekend Big Leon is going to break my thumbs?"

2011-12-29 12:59:25 PM
Gruden responded "Now that guy is a former official. The way that guy officiated is simply incredible. He is one great official."

2011-12-29 01:05:38 PM
The man is an empty windbag because he can't afford to offend ANY coach, player, executive, or official, because he knows he'll eventually coach again.

What's sad is, this is still the best MNF crew they've had in many years.

2011-12-29 01:08:28 PM
Gruden: That guy is a former official in the National. Football. League. He leads the National Football League in grit. When I was going through tape I saw that Mike Pereira does everything exactly by the playbook. Now over to Tedy Bruschi.

Bruschi: PATRIOTS PATRIOTS PATRIOTS PATRIOTS STROKE PATRIOTS PATRIOTS TOM BRADY PATRIOTS

"I respect his knowledge about the X's and O's when it comes to coaching and playing the game of football, but I have very little respect for him when it comes to officiating and his knowledge of the rules."

Isn't that one and the same? How can a coach be good with X's and O's and coaching if he doesn't know the rules?

If I'm Chucky who the hell would I want to come back to? Maybe to KC but then he has no say in personnel and would nee dto either make nice with Romeo or get an equally accomplished D-Coordinator. All the other openings are varying degrees of bleh.

Jaws is terrible. Trico is pretty good, though. Gruden is insufferably annoying. He has so many NFL players' dicks in his mouth it is amazing he can speak at all.

Yes, because the ensuing butthurt, apologies, and resignation that would ultimately follow are so worth it so you can hear a professional speak freely (caveat: only when you agree with it). I'll go easy on you; I will only damn you to 1 year of Dennis Miller commentary.

That will never happen again. The NFL and the networks that partner with them don't want announcers disparaging players like that.

How so? Maybe I don't watch enough, but I watch PTI every day, and he has a weekly 5-minute segment. He's damn smart, and can boil down complex X's and O's for the common fan.

And he's not 100% positive at all. He'll say a team doesn't have much of a chance and tell you why.

Now, if you want unprofessional, blow-hards yelling "This player sucks donkey balls!!!!"... listen to sports talk radio.

No, saying someone "sucks" or "need to be fired" is unprofessional. Leave that for the blow hards on sports talk radio.

I'd prefer an announcer that explains situations, explains that a player is missing this or that skill, is overmatched here or there. Or a coach is using the running/passing game in the wrong situation here.

And, yes, you do hear that.

You won't hear "The Bears need to fire Martz during halftime durrrr hurrrr!" And I don't want to hear that.

You do, but with those three, and especially Gruden, the actual analysis which may include a fair assessment of an incorrect decision or play gets drowned out by the overly effusive praise for the execution of a 4 yard run up the middle or a 5 yard slant to a WR that happened the play before. Turn the cockslobbery dial down from a "10" to a "5", and I really have no issue with that crew.

There was a link on here about a month or so ago, about how MNF was trying to hype the Chiefs-Pats game. Jaworski basically took on the challenge of hyping the Chiefs side, knowing full well that they sucked out loud. And of course during the game he made a comment about how he really liked Tyler Palko, thought he had the stuff to make it in the NFL...and two plays later Palko threw a pick.

Other than that, Jaworski is a damn good analyst. Watch Edge NFL Matchup (if you can find it, I think Sundays at 8am), he and Merrill Hoge know their stuff.

To each their own, I think they're pretty damn smart. Been a Kornheiser fan since his original ESPN radio show.

They rarely talk in cliche (and call themselves out on the rare times they do), which alone puts them above almost every other sports show on TV.

You have to admit, it is pretty funny when the MNF crew hits that tipping point in a truly bad game where they just completely stop caring.

Quasar: You have to admit, it is pretty funny when the MNF crew hits that tipping point in a truly bad game where they just completely stop caring.

Unfortunately it used to mean that they'd go off on random tangents and talk about the weather, local events, NFL news, or just riff on how useless the teams are. Now it's "we've got 4 seconds to kill let's see how many times we can say Tebow".

he just pushed the boy Mike-Mike in his hind parts, that all.

Well, yes but that will be half the distance to the goal and

But, the game's out there, and it's play or get played. That simple! (draws pistol) I don't know about no defenses, but I'm guessin' right here that these fo-fives is enough to beat that 3-4.

Uhh and now a word from our sponsors....

Gruden, just like Joe Thiesmann on the old Sunday Night games, just plays the role of shiat-stirrer. The difference is that Gruden is a little more likeable in real life than Thiesmann.

2011-12-29 01:58:05 PM
Meh, I really dont mind em all that much other than Gruden goes a bit over the top every now and then. I dont really dislike any of the announcers other than Theismann. Hes just horrible and spews his bias all over the telecast.

I love Jaws when he's breaking down tape. He's phenomenal. As an in-game analyst, he's worthless, because he gets caught up in the Gruden lovefest with every player on the field.

I love Jon Gruden not because he's a great announcer (he's not), but because half the stuff he says is so homoerotic and creepy. I watch MNF mostly for the ick factor.

A coupla weeks ago he kept repeating "power to the tight end side" and it was the repeating soundtrack to my nightmares.

All good. I don't watch much MNF unless I have a rooting interest. I hate ESPN (for the most part) with a passion.

2011-12-29 02:24:34 PM
I would say there are a large percentage of players that don't understand the rules. For example, the defense cannot score on the extra point or two point attempt, yet I see teams trying to do that almost every single time they have the opportunity. And then you have the personal foul penalties on quarterbacks and receivers which nobody except apparently Roger Goodell understands.

Anyways, why should the announcers be held to a higher understanding of the rules than those participating?

Tirico is alright, in the sense that I feel like I can watch the game without too much intrusion from him. this is also why I don't like Gus Johnson.

I don't enjoy Jaworski as much as say, the ramblings of Frank Gifford, but he dropped the S-bomb on live TV. I LoL'd.

This, with the caveat that I'll watch it if there's no good college basketball on. I used to want to work at ESPN since i love so many sports, but it just seems so biased I lost interest in non-satirical sports analysis.

I don't need announcers to hype the game for me as it's being played. I was watching Baylor/Miss St last night with the volume real low, and quite enjoyed it. Having someone yell at me every time a 18-footer is taken with over a minute left is not my idea of entertainment.

Gruden knows what all the hand signals and gestures the players do on the field mean. Not many broadcasters do. If you are a football player, Gruden loves you and gushes. I like the guy Mike Mayock on thursday nights nfl network games. He sounds like how John Clayton looks, but he is as smart about football too.

Say what you will but I would take Gruden over Billick any day of the week. Billick messes up player names and is quite boring to listen to. Gruden can at least read and fill dead air. Billick just sucks!
