Soooo, about 1/10th or less of what a CEO of a major corporation makes.

What does this tell us?

Read up about Juan Carlos's life sometime. He basically tricked the facists into creating a democratic state once Franco died. All while he had a fair shot at simply taking his place. Very admirable man.

So you're saying he earned his $300k/ year by not being a greedy pig and taking it all when he had the chance? That's fair, I'd say

Now what exactly do his kids do to earn their keep?

$382,600 a year? They're not trying hard enough. I'm sure we have 10 times the number of useless bureaucrats in the U.S. taking home that much or more per year.

Yeah, but what is the value of their entire estate? Salary paid by the government is nothing compared to the income they get from their various holdings, land, and other assets.

Its like how everyone lauded Steve Jobs for taking $1 salary, but ignored the eleventy billion dollars of stock he got and cashed in every year.

If I ran around telling everyone I was King because some old miser proclaimed me his successor 6 years before his death, they'd lock me away!

Still, it's very good money considering the aforementioned holdings and estates. Plus, there's the added bonus of people constantly kissing your ass.

That crown represents more theft, misery and hardship that any other symbol on Earth.

I would say that the worst is the Crown of England. I like to call it Scotland's Mexico.

Spain is doing a lot better than the UK for monarch value. The UK does not pay the Queen a salary, instead we pay for everything she needs to the tune of $23.3M p.a. (£15.1M made up of £7.9M plus £7.2 from "reserves") (new window)

Also I doubt this includes things like Prince Phillips recent stay in hospital as that would be covered by the "free for all" National Heath Service. In his case consisting of a helicopter ride to the best hospital, the attentions of a top specialist over the Christmas period and an immediate operation.

/Not that I'm bitter

I usually have nothing but contempt for royals, but I have a soft spot for Juan Carlos. The man could have been an absolute monarch and instead made Spain a democracy, and I respect that. Sounds like he really isn't too much of a financial drain on the nation either, unlike a certain royal family I could mention.

The Steve Jobs / William Clay Ford Jr. payment schedule seems like a good way to go for CEOs, at least the best option so far. Both took nothing in salary or bonuses but instead took stock options as compensation. Sure, they made a killing -- but only because they did their job well. Why is that a bad thing?

The atrocity are the CEOs who sit on each other's boards and collude to give each other obscene bonuses while their companies are dying.

It tells us the king does most of his business under the table....

TFA says that they're only publishing this info because of a scandal. The scandal is that certain members of the family were (corruptly) getting paid 500,000 a day for appearances, talks, etc.

FTFA: Only the crown prince receives a fixed salary. Everyone else receives compensation for expenses while performing official duties.

Also, note that the royal family resides in the smallest of the royal residences.

CSB time:

Back in 2001 in Jackson, Mississippi during the Majesty of Spain exhibition, the group sponsoring the event hung this giant banner featuring a photo of Juan Carlos and Sofia. While driving down the street next to that building, windows down due to the awesome spring weather, an old man looking at the banner stepped backwards off the sidewalk, in front of my car. Fortunately I noticed him and had already slowed down so I didn't mow down the old man. He spun around, holy crap, it was the freakin' King of Spain. He apologized and said he was embarrassed by the giant banner, saying he wasn't worthy of such a spectacle.
