If only it was also spineless, then it would've been a natural politician.

Wowee. If you're interested in being totally overwhelmed with the 8 million plus wild and wacky ocean creatures check out the coml.org website (census of marine life). Through a world-wide effort involving hundred of marine biologists and scientits, they discovered and indentified over 1,200 new species of marine life IN ONE FREAKING YEAR. Of course the census wasn't comprehensive so who knows what's out there waiting to be meeted and greeted.

I saw a guy give a Powerpoint presentation on their findings, my mind was completely blown.

HA-ha. I knew it wouldn't be proper to put an American political joke here, since the creature was discovered in Scotland. Thanks for picking it up.

According to Wiki, this thing is really primitive: Lancelets have no respiratory system, breathing solely through their skin, which consists of a simple epithelium. Despite the name, little if any respiration occurs in the gill slits, which are solely devoted to feeding. The circulatory system does resemble that of primitive fish in its general layout, but is much simpler, and does not include a heart. There are no blood cells, and no haemoglobin.

It is spineless. It has a nerve cord, but no spine. Apparently the only thing that qualifies this as an animal and not a plant is...umm.....well actually I am not sure what qualifies this as an animal as opposed to a plant, now that I think about it. No respiration, no heart or blood, no brain...sounds like a sea banana to me.

Animals without backbones hid from each other, or fell down. Clambasaurs and oysterettes appeared as appetizers - then came the sponges, which sucked up about 10 percent of all life. Hundreds of years later, in the late Devouring Period, the fish became obnoxious. Trailerbites, Chickerbites, and Mosqwitoes collided aimlessly in the dense gas. Finally, tiny edible plants sprang up in rows - giving birth to generations of insecticides and other small, dying creatures.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone here is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I did some further reading:

Amphioxus, despite having no hard parts, is known from very ancient fossils dating to the Burgess Shales (that other critter above looks like it came from the Burgess Shales, also, which is not surprising since they are famous for the number of body plans that show up for the first and last time).

It is very useful for the study of the chordates and vertebrates as it is a very early example of a primitive proto-spinal cord. The basic body plan is that of a chordate or vertebrate, stripped down to the barest basics.

It is eaten in some places around the world (although probably not in Scotland). It's like an anchovy fillet with no inedible fish bits to cut off: no gills, no head, no tail, no fins, no waste.

The amphioxus lives in sand where it draws food in one end and craps out of the other. It doesn't really need a face or a brain for its simple tube-like lifestyle, but it has the advantage over worms in having some protection for its central nerve.

The name amphioxus means pointed at both ends. It is also called the lancelet. They are very small. You could hold a pile of them in your hand.

It really does look like some of the critters from the Burgess Shale. Sort of H.P. Lovecraftian.

What's the discovery? Is it a new species of lancelet, or living in an unexpected place, or what? "Amphioxus" in general is neither a new discovery nor a fish. Why can't writers of science-oriented articles do literally even a minute of the most rudimentary research, like looking up "amphioxus" on Wikipedia or something? There's even an old song about the thing (dating back to the 1920's or so, so don't rely on it for taxonomical accuracy).

It's A Long Way From Amphioxus (to the tune of It's a Long Way to Tipperary)

Oh, a fish-like thing appeared among the annelids one day,
It hadn't any parapods or setae to display.
It hadn't any eyes or jaws or ventral nervous chord.
But it had a lot of gill slits and it had a notochord.

Chorus:
It's a long way from amphioxus, it's a long way to us.
It's a long way from amphioxus to the meanest human cuss.
It's good-bye to fins and gill slits, and welcome lungs and hair.
It's a long, long way from amphioxus, but we all came from there.

It wan't much to look at and it scarce knew how to swim.
And Nereis was very sure it hadn't come from him.
The Molluscs wouldn't own it and the Arthropods got sore.
So the poor thing had to burrow in the sand along the shore.

Chorus

He burrowed in the sand before a crab could nip his tail.
And he said, "Gill slits and myotomes are all to no avail."
"I've grown some metapleural folds and sport an oral hood.
But all these fine new characters don't do me any good."

Chorus

He sulked awhile down in the sand, without a bit of pep;
Then he stiffened up his notochord and said, "I'll beat 'em yet!"
"Let them laugh and show their ignorance, I don't mind their jeers."
"Just wait until they see me in a hundred million years."

Chorus

"My notochord shall change into a chain of vertebrae,
And, as fins, my metapleural folds will agitate the sea."
"My tiny dorsal nervous chord shall be a mighty brain.
And the vertebrates shall dominate the animal domain."

Chorus
