It is spineless. It has a nerve cord, but no spine. Apparently the only thing that qualifies this as an animal and not a plant is...umm.....well actually I am not sure what qualifies this as an animal as opposed to a plant, now that I think about it. What's the discovery? Is it a new species of lancelet, or living in an unexpected place, or what? "Amphioxus" in general is neither a new discovery nor a fish. Why can't writers of science-oriented articles do literally even a minute of the most rudimentary research, like looking up "amphioxus" on Wikipedia or something? There's even an old song about the thing (dating back to the 1920's or so, so don't rely on it for taxonomical accuracy).
