My god people! Is there anything left to tell that they havent spilled?! I've never watched the show! Not one single minute and I still know more about these people then I know about my cousins!!!

This.

I can't stand that I know anything about these people. I don't even want to know their names. They haven't done anything to deserve the attention. I don't understand people who are "fascinated" by them.

I have never watched Deep Space Nine because of those idiots ruining the show.

I came in here to ask, WHY on earth are we supposed to GIVE A DAMN about this family? what brought them into the spotlight, before the tv show/wedding/booty pics?

Was it a sex tape? a scandal? divorce? there's always something that puts the richies in the glossies, but please tell me why is this particular family is so popular...

also, star trek thread...

engage.

The nanny will probably get her payday, but the publisher will never recoup the expense. A tell-all book centering on the Kardashian household simply won't sell, as no one with a modicum of interest in the family could possibly be literate.

Unfortunately,Snooki's recent success as a best selling 'author' indicates otherwise.

I am sad to say that I, too know way more about these people than my own relatives without ever tuning in to the show. They are everywhere. I somehow manage to lay eyes on at least one of their makeup-caked faces every single day, sometimes multiple times.

At least Kim didn't become famous until she was in her late 20s, imagine if she had been in the public eye since her teenage years?

Not that this makes it better but considering how long we've been plagued with the Lohan family (12 years to the general public, 15 for me) I don't know who is the lesser of the two evils.

At least Lindsey once had a promising career.

I hate Kardashian threads as much as I love Kardashian/Star Trek mashup threads.

I keep waiting for the XXX parody where they slip a dude in there in Gul Dukat makeup. "Go-Dickit," perhaps.

All I ever think about when I see their name is "wow deep space nine is just awful." then I get this TNG gem of a headline and I don't think I'll ever have to think of DSN again while reading the entertainment board. Thank you kind sir.

/If you like DSN, cool beans for you. I watched them all. I personally feel that it's an awful series with a few great episodes, contrasted with TNG, which was a great series with a few awful episodes. To each their own.

I see them as two distinctly different incarnations under different stewardship. TNG was Roddenberry's last hurrah, and in a way he was given a sort of Professor Emeritus position; some creative involvement but overall just there as a figurehead as the creator of the series. The episodes had to fit his specific (and many sci-fi writers/fans claim narrow and unrealistic, even as a future utopia) rules as to what was allowed and what was not. I do not fault him for this because that formula made it great as it did the Original Series. Kirk was the swashbuckling space cowboy, Picard was the intellectual diplomat, representing a Starfleet now 80 years older and wiser. Q was a throwback to Trelane and various "hyperintelligent space beings" all of whom in one way or another were objective Torquemadas judging humanity for its sins. There were many great things in TNG, but also in many ways it lacked a certain gravitas with regard to the cold rules of life in outer space.

DS9 wasn't really a Roddenberry creation, and it gave writers a much different milieu in which to create stories. The characters weren't originally likable (except for perhaps Quark, who I always felt was a representative of 20th century "us") but once the writing picked up and the Dominion entered the picture, the sky was the limit. The series was gritty, full of pathos and character exploration (which was always the best formula for fan-judged classic episodes), but also explored the SFX technology to create very cool space battles. Anyone who didn't crap themselves when they saw the Defiant join the fleet when they evacuated the station wasn't really someone who would be impressed with what followed.

"In the Pale Moonlight" was what I considered one of the best episodes in Trek history, because it stripped off all the veneer of Starfleet's boy scout image and made them just as guilty of winning by any means necessary. You want to win an otherwise hopeless battle, you're gonna have to deal with the devil. Garak became for me one of the classic Trek characters, because he was everything you didn't expect in the team - an antihero exile with a checkered past who ultimately just wants to go home.

DS9 has it's own distinct appeal to Trek fans who didn't like the formulaic utopia of Roddenberry's "dream," and while many fans loved that dreamy aspect of the series (and it did indeed make the series a staple of pop culture), it made the future too unrealistic in many ways. I love both series for different reasons, and even their worst shows couldn't hold a candle to "Spock's Brain" or the Voyager 'take the cheese to Sickbay" episode.

You are a very insightful trek fan. I applaud you for that. I am in the middle of rewatching all the series again, chronologically. I am just past the DS9 season 4 finale, do maybe I'll see it more from your POV this time around.

At this point, I think the Kardashians could announce that their entire clan is really a cell of Al Queda terrorist operatives, and not only would people still watch them, their ratings would go up.

That's just when DS9 starts going from good to great.

Are you watching them chronologically in terms of release date, or chronologically in the Star Trek timeline? You will have a lot of switching back and forth between series if the latter, but I've always thought that would be interesting.

Ya know, I was going to make a snarky comment about someone taking the time to do that, but I'm guessing someone has. Kinda kills the funny.

/agrees about interestingness of that.
