Ugh. They all look exactly like every other coffee shop I've ever been to.

"He's researched coffee for over 35 years." yeah, no. He's sold coffee for 35 years. There's a difference. Honestly, I wouldn't expect a coffee researcher to even know how to brew a decent cup. They might be able to draw a coffee genome from memory, but the new barista at star bucks can make you a better cup of joe.

Honestly, you can roll into any cafe and it will be fine.

Nothing in San Francisco. Good. The hipsters are going to get their panties all in a twist.

I'm not a serious coffee drinker, but am always amused by the staggering douchebaggery surrounding it.

When I do have a cup of joe, I like it like I like my women: dark and bitter.

My bad. I missed that Philz is in SF. They'll still get their panties in a twist because Philz is too well known to be cool.

On a side note, I'm going to have to agree with Wrong_Intentions on the Dunkin' coffee....The one thing I miss about Dallas...

Hell, I'm just happy to see flipnotics made the cut. That said, we have a coffee shop up here in the suburbs called Kenny's that makes a blueberry coffee during the fall. If any Austin Farkers are in the wells branch neighborhood & need a caffeine fix, I certainly recommend it.

How in the hell is KramerBooks and Afterwords (DC) not on this list? I mean, their website is terrible, but if you're drunk, awake at 4:30 am on a Saturday in Washington, DC and you need a decent breakfast with great coffee, odds are you've been there. And even though it's been years since I went, the bookstore was great. They always had a few big sellers and then nothing but eclectic books you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else, even in well run used-book stores.

Good coffee is good, who gives a shiat about the building?

I get my red eye in the winter and an iced coffee the rest of the time from M. E. Swing in DC every single freakin' day. I cannot tell you much about the interior, who cares?

M. E. Swing = great coffee.

On a serious note, if you can, treat yourself to some Stumptown Roasters coffee. It's much better than Starbucks, and since they roast their own coffees the quality is lightyears ahead of the coffee served by the cafes in the article (which are mostly brewing bulk Illy coffee, for the most part)

I've seen those on Amazon and wondered about them. Right now I'm looking to upgrade to a burr grinder an find a decent canister for storage so I can buy more than two lbs of beans at a time.

That is very good coffee, but I don't think it counts as "indie" anymore. I'm pretty sure an investment group bought them out, which makes it unattractive to hipsters.

As long as they keep the quality up, I'm happy to pad the pockets of those investors.

Is there a difference between a coffee house and a coffee shop? A coffee shop (house?) in my mind is a dark, intimidating, and dingy place with acceptable coffee, jazz ensembles, and weeknight open-mic poetry readings. The coffee is there to keep people going until the early morning closing time while washing down the tar and nicotine.

I like coffee, so I looked that up. It turns out I don't like coffee nearly enough to work that hard for it.

I got one of these for Christmas two years ago, and as long as you only drink a cup or two a day, it's about the best coffee maker for the truly lazy:

img171.imageshack.us

I mean, you have to remove the brewing cup if you want to make another cup of coffee, but otherwise it's the kind of invention that really comes into its own in modern-day America. I don't have to do shiat, and I get a pretty good cup of coffee. I got tired of refilling the reservoir so I hooked up a siphon to a 3 gallon plastic water jug, thus reducing my effort even further.

This made me think of rufus wainwright :

" If drinkin' coffee's your idea of really cool
You can't expect no crazy chick to notice you
Just sittin' there dreamin' instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure Instant pleasure, instant pleasure"

Irrelevant? Sure. Could just be the box wine playing dj?

If this was 1998 we'd have Insomnia in Deep Ellum (Dallas nightclub spot) on the list.

Sigh... I haven't even been around Deep Ellum in five years. But my hearing is too valuable, and there isn't a nightclub down there you can carry on a conversation at.

And my choice of coffee? QT.

Had time to kill waiting for some people, am a coffee addict, my bag was heavy, I wanted to sit down, so I went in there. Quite enjoyed some coffee, unfortunately my bag just got heavier because I ended up buying a buncha books, too.

Believe it or not, a burr grinder makes your coffee even better especially with a french press. Less mud.
