A really good landing is where the plane can be used again.

Because no one was using their cell phone!

Gear extended, upside down airplanes always remind me of my kitchen floor :(

Depends. Does crawling out and immediately vomiting all over yourself count as "walking away"?

2011-12-28 11:08:18 PM
How did anyone survive this?

Answer: Nothing explody caught fire and the airplane is still more or less intact, protecting the passengers somewhat from impact.

Next question?

...That MUST have been some good beer, 'cause I took one look at the pics and now I'm imagining someone animating a hand coming down, scratching it on the underside, and having it wiggle a wheel happily like a dog.

Compared to many landings, this one sucks.

Fog and wind, pfffft... Try landing a 737 at Courchevel.

Looking at the windows on the aircraft, there seems to be a lot of extra non-passenger space between the entry door and the cockpit. If that was a US carrier, they'd have jammed another five rows in there.

It was just oriented for the wrong hemisphere.

Helps that it's a Russian aircraft. I know most of their military aircraft are usually designed to take off from less than perfect runways or even dirt strips. It would not surprise me that this feature is built into the civilian aircraft.

You're assuming the Soviets cared whether all passenger rows had windows.

Tupolev / Doompolev continues its ritual un-prosecuted pre-meditated killing of passengers world wide. From forcing Communist destroyed countries to buy Tupolev to get aid, to failing the Tu-334 100% working-parts test, Doompolev builds on its reputation for falling out of the sky. ILS landing, level and it "flips over". Ницца. Хорошие самолеты.

Worst case scenario would be a hard belly flop, which kills people by dislocating necks. This plane was already on the ground before flipping over, so worst impact on a person was the equivalent of a 20-30 foot drop against lap belts. I'd expect a lot of broken femurs and back problems.

Am I the only one who gets sick of the idiotic caricatures of BOTH sides of the regulatory battle? The people saying there are too many regulations, some of which are overly complex, generally AREN'T saying that all regulations should be thrown out tomorrow. The people saying that regulations that have the force of law behind them are required for some industries generally AREN'T saying they'd like to snuff out the businesses being regulated.

This. People wore seatbelts, so besides the head-bumping of being rolled onto the side, then upside-down, there likely wasn't a whole lot of stuff flying around inside the cabin.

/This is why personal belongings must be *securely* stowed before landing.
//Still not something I'd ever want to experience, but hardly as horrific as TFA makes it out to be.
///Why yes, I *have* watched way too many airline disaster shows, how did you guess?

When you stack people on pallets instead of giving them seats, they're already in a crash-survivable position, so naturally they're going to live through the crash. Plus, they can be off-loaded with forklifts at airports which lack jetways.

Damn, they don't build planes like that anymore. All these new flimsy planes just break apart -- they're just too small to be safe. That's some quality Detroit steel, there -- survivability!

Yoeman: Silly, drunk me, why is the belly all 'sploded? Just a result of the crash??

"'The plane skidded off the runway and turned to the left side. Its wing was smashed off. A loud explosion was heard.'"

I think it rolled over its left wing onto its back, smashing off the left wing, ripping its spar right out the belly of the craft, and in retaliation, all the fuel lines and tanks, now broken up, said f u and blew themselves up.

But that's my wild ass guess.

That's where the KGB used to sit ready to shoot the crew if they tried to defect.

Russian pilots were given a flightplan. If they deviate they were forced to land. The passengers continue by bus and the crew were never seen again.

Surprisingly I have, but I only read the first book when I was a kid. Couldn't remember the name of it later on to read the rest. Around that time I discovered Stephen King and that obsessed me for a decade.
