That quote was partially stolen, pretty sure it was Sharpton, if not Jesse Jackson. It's written on a bookmark in one of my books somewhere, I know it.

So how many times have you voted for your reps since the Patriot Act was passed? You've voted for the Senator at least once and the House member what, 4 times?

Hey, his plan of 11 herbs and spices for everyone sounds damn good. At least we'll be getting jobs out of it!

Thankfully I was voting for Feingold. Too bad he's gone...lost to a guy whose only achievement was inheriting a business from his wife's daddy. Crazy times.

see, they'll keep getting voted for because the average voter will say 'maybe they voted for it with the best of intentions at heart' if they don't tell themselves 'oh they couldn't have. it's all those other idiots that want to undermine everything this country stands for'.

or maybe they'll just say 'better the devil i know than some schlub who talks big NOW about getting in there and fixing it, but when they get there it's more of the same'

or maybe they'll say(like most do) 'my vote doesn't count. why bother.'

Good news people, having done stupid shiat for years validates continued stupid shiat doings!

So Vote Obama 2012! We know he will use the power responsibly, and that we will never have a President that will misuse it!

I have to agree with the quote in the headline.

I well with pride at the thought that Montanans are attempting to recall both of their Senators because they voted for NDAA.

That's how it's supposed to be done. If our elected officials are no longer representative of our will, but are instead purchased or controlled by greed or fear, then they should no longer be our elected officials.

2011-12-28 06:09:30 PM
The problem is that it costs millions of dollars to get elected in America. So the 1% will almost always be disproportionally favored by every candidate. And when every single one of them is signing off on fascism/corporatism in America, people wind up deciding based on other issues. It's not like politicians are otherwise interchangeable. There do remain differences.

So, sure, it would be nice to get sane candidates and sane representatives from the various political leanings, if not the parties. But it will take actual campaign finance reform for it to happen with an effective frequency.

2011-12-28 06:09:34 PM
Internet activists were so concerned about people taking away their right to "free" movies and TV with SOPA that they gave a mulligan to NDAA. The rule here is that you can get away with what you want in government if you don't touch the bread and circuses. SOPA touches the bread and circuses. NDAA didn't - which is why it got up with minimal screaming from the digerati.

The most infuriating part of the current state of America and many other western countries making the shift to hard right politics is the people at the top are shooting themselves in the foot. They had a good thing going and nobody except so called "radicals" and "nutjobs" were calling them out on their sh*t. Now huge sections of the populace are getting angsty and rebelly because of their blatant greed and heavy handedness. The trick to being a good confidence man is to NOT LET ANYONE KNOW YOU'RE A CONFIDENCE MAN! Especially your marks.

Zero. But that's easy when John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchinson are your senators and Joe Barton is your representative.

U.S. voters as a whole do not elect based on voter history. They vote based on party affiliation, and nothing else. NOTHING else. They could have a Democrat who votes in step with Republicans every time, but will vote for them because they're a Democrat.

Want to change that? Make a law that prevents stating the party affiliation on the ballot. I would even put a couple of fake names on the ballot. This way you have to know exactly who you're voting for. Anyone voting for one of the fakes is not allowed to vote in the next election.

We have lifetime incumbents in this country because people tend to vote one way for years.

Sen: Russ Feingold (only senator who voted against) - Yes, I've voted for him since.

An individual vote is useless, because their party membership (and the financial and PR support that implies) depends on supporting the party. You vote for the party platform, and the local rep is irrelevant to a large degree.

I'd love to have parties be illegal - have nothing but independents, and let them vote a leader from within their ranks. No more parties.

I think there needs to be some clarification, because people talk about the NDAA as if it's the first time being passed. This legislation has been passed (and needs to be passed) annually in order to fund the Armed Forces. As usual, they are several months late in passing it this year. The bill, in and of itself, merely provides the budget for the military. However, this year they included the controversial provisions which have thrust usually mundane and routine bill into the spotlight.

tl;dr - NDAA is a necessary annual bill, but they scumbagged loss of liberty provisions into it this year

My voting strategy is simple: If you are currently holding an office, I'm voting for the other guy. No matter the party.

You, Mr. or Ms. Incumbent, have proven yourself to be incompetent. Get out and let someone else try it for a while. They cannot possibly do worse than you have.

I just read an article where a county tried to do that and a judge tossed it out, saying it disenfranchised black voters. If I find it, I'll post the link.
