They tried to cancel it, but Colm Meaney cut their balls off.

I think I've watched 3 or 4 too... not that it is "bad", but, it hasn't grabbed me enough like Breaking Bad that I really "need" to watch more episodes. If I get bored I might watch some more on the DVR.

The last episode was pretty good. They actually had action and wrapped up several of the less compelling plotlines. I'm still not sure exactly where they're going with it though.

I'm paraphrasing from somewhere (Slashfilm, maybe?) but the best parts of
Breaking Bad
come from telling small stories - a high school chemistry teacher gets cancer; meanwhile,
Hell on Wheels
is trying to tell a giganto-story about American manifest destiny, racial tensions with Indians, reconstruction after slavery, etc. The only thing
Hell on Wheels
should be about is Bohannon's quest for revenge. The last few episodes seem like he's forgotten all about his dead wife.
That said, I am enjoying it. Colm Meaney is awsomely evil, and Bohannon is like a dirty, scruffy hero. I'm not giving up on it just yet.

I like the tension in HoW.
None of the characters particularly like each other, but are chained by their motives.
Guy A cant kill guy B because A needs something from guy C. And guy C needs B alive... etc.
I'm curious how the dominos will fall.

As far as I'm concerned they can run the Yule Log until Breaking Bad comes back.

I dig it... I like the characters and how they're developing.
Definitely curious to see how it'll play out.

Its very existence taps into my Deadwood rage and renders me unable to watch it.

I will assert my independent thought:
I love this TV show. Each of the characters is fully drawn. The plots go in ways that I cannot predict. The actors (especially Colm) seem to be enjoying themselves.
The Swede is such an awesome bad guy that I can't not giggle with delight when he's on screen. But he's not just an asshole, he's a sympathetic character too. Like Jayne's asshole, he thinks the show is about him. He thinks he's righteous, and that makes him work.
Common is farking brilliant.
That is all.

I suspect it will be like most shows on AMC and tear through the last few episodes like a runaway locomotive.

I had high hopes for the show as well... and while it's good enough to keep me tuned in, it's just not as great as I thought it would be.
Christopher Heyerdahl is one of the best castings I've seen in a while.

Pretty much this. I have not been anxiously awaiting new episodes since about ep 3. In fact, I'm probably 2 episodes behind right now. If it doesn't get going soon, I'm going to lose interest.

I also somewhat lost interest after about the 3rd episode due to the slow pace. I gave it another shot and got caught up a few days ago and it's worth it; the last episode was intense. Also for anyone wondering where it is going you can look up the history of the Union Pacific railroad because thus far it appears to be accurately portraying the true events while fictionalizing the social dynamics (much like Deadwood).

Good actors, but it's probably the most boring thing I've attempted to watch this year. The writers can be fired and new ones brought in, but this will statistically just result in it being even worse.

My step-dad works at UP and he said they were more or less told by corporate that they didn't feel the company was well portrayed in the series. They weren't told not to watch it, corporate just basically insulted the series

Crooked railway barons, corrupt politicians, trigger-happy cutthroats, lynch mobs, whores, extortioners, post-civil war rage and murderous natives.....what's not to love?
Keep watching. It will only get better.
Yes, Deadwood was great, but it's history. Work with what you got.
