not surprising at all.

There are three kinds of people in this world: Dicks, Pussies, and Assholes. Dicks like to fark Pussies; they will fark Assholes too if the occasion calls for it. Pussies hate Dicks because the Dicks are always trying to fark them, but they also love Dicks whenever the Dicks are farking the Assholes instead of them. Assholes shiat on everybody, whether they be Dicks, Pussies, or other Assholes. Assholes hate everybody and everybody hates them, and in short they make the world stink. So which of these delightful obscenities are you?

/seems like more poor people need to be dicks to assholes

It's self evident to me that acquiring wealth is a cut-throat enterprise. Even the lowest rungs of middle management are staffed with people that would sell their own grandmothers to make a dime. But they tend to be stupider than dirt. To really 'succeed' you need to be ruthless and somewhat smart. The fact truly ruthless people are oblivious to their own nature just makes it worse.

Most people with a conscience either think it's not worth it, or delude themselves with some platitudes about hard-work and determination.

It's anecdotal, but I've generally found that the people with the least are the most selfless and generous. I'm not talking about easy virtue that requires no more than a minor inconvenience, but real sacrifice, offered without hesitation and without any expectation of praise or reward. In comparison, I've seen too many instances where relatively wealthy people made what they considered to be a generous donation to a cause and then clearly expected (or desperately needed) to be told repeatedly how awesome they are.

What's the over/under on the percentage of comments in this thread that will be posted by the usual Fark IndependentTM trolls?

If it's anything less than 35% then put me down for two grand.

I should add this: My anecdotal experience does not break along political lines. R's and D's on both sides.

Not in the least surprised. My friend whose family had been evicted from their apartment last Christmas and who didn't have enough money to really buy any fun presents for her two teenage kids still managed to cobble together a few pieces of chocolate to give my family as a thank-you gift for all the help we had given them this past year. Most valuable gift I got this year by far.

The best part of that was that I had raised $250 in donations from other friends and was able to buy them each a cool present and give Mom $100 to shop for her own kids. Seeing her shop for her kids was the second best gift of the year.

Well yeah, how do you think they got the money? By being nice to everyone and giving out free hugs. I don't like to generalize and not all rich people are assholes (some do manage to make a good amount of money whilst still being reasonably decent at heart) but many make their money by screwing over others.

But not all poor people are wonderful either. Plenty of poor people have the asshole attitude but have just never managed to put it to good use to make themselves rich.

I can't find it in myself to screw others over so I remain relatively poor. But I don't delude myself by believing that hard work and a good attitude will get me rich. I know I'll always be fairly poor and I don't really care.

This.

People who will do anything for money will out compete people who will do almost anything for money.

You don't get rich by being nice to people. Compassion, empathy, and honesty are all obstacles to success

2011-12-28 10:06:42 AM
Anyone who's delivered food to houses knows the rich people tip half as much on average than regular folks.

2011-12-28 10:06:59 AM
Rich people do become somewhat "jaded" from the amount of people that continually hit them up for "support".

I have a cousin that would continually ask me for money. I'd loan him $200 "until next payday" and never see it back. Then it was $500. Then one time he tried to hit me up for $10,000 and I told him that I was done "lending" him money that never got paid back. So guess what, to him and some other members of my family I am now the asshole because since he has nothing (his own doing) and since I can "afford it" I am just supposed to give him money.

It's the same with very wealthy people, they are hit left and right by everyone under the sun, every charity, etc... and the ones that get nothing from them instantly label them as assholes.

2011-12-28 10:07:12 AM
Of course the rich are assholes. You can't do the things you need to do to become wealthy and still remain a decent human being. It just can't be done.

Rich people see the world as a zero sum game of dollars and cents. They perceive everything that they have to be the result of money, including the relationships in their lives, and thus money becomes the substitute for love, compassion, and all other things that real human beings experience.

It happens to a few exceedingly lucky people, who happen to be friends or associates with assholes that require their skills. Think Steve Wozniak. But that's pretty atypical.

No shiat... My clients that are wealthy are generally tighter than a fish's asshole when it comes to money. They will nickle and dime me death over proposals and expect a yard from me while only paying for an inch (and biatching about the price the whole time). Not all of them, mind you, but enough to make it noticeable.

Anecdotal evidence here as well - we live in a low income neighbourhood, with some blue collar folks, some on disability, some low income elderly and the like.

These people are the most excellent generous neighbours I have ever had the good fortune to live with. This is truly a caring little community, with lots of giving and sharing. Right now I am waiting for my neighbour to come by and work on rewiring this old house.

Earlier this winter, one set of neighbours had the tragedy of the death of a 40 year old furnace. They had no way to replace it, so a bunch of us got together and kicked in a bit of money. It was enough to get them started, and now they are warm and toasty. They even had enough left over to get a few little presents and the like.

I love this bunch of poor folks :) The stories of their generosity goes on and on.

I think you may have missed the point. I don't think the "kinder and more compassionate" folk they are talking about were referred to in that way because they continually loaned their deadbeat cousin money over and over, despite knowing he does not repay his debts. That's not kindness, that's just dumb.

Having no more parasites who get rich by stealing wealth created by others would give everyone an opportunity to benefit from their own labor.

I believe it. I'd also broaden the "rich asshole" category to include people who are just trying to be rich.

Go to any university and note the differences in how liberal arts majors treat their peers, versus how pre-med and business majors act. It's pretty startling.

If you think wealth redistribution in the Western world really goes from the top to the bottom, and not the other way around, you have a lot to learn about economics. People work their entire lives, struggling to break even, while those at the top reap the benefits.

Again, helping out your friends and neighbors is not equal to stealing. If the only reason you donate to charity is to keep as much of your wealth as possible from being "stolen", you aren't being charitable, you're being a dick.

oh yes the old "the govt uses armed robbery to steal my money" canard.

you made your money because you live in a society that allows you to be prosperous.
and it's only because of that tax money that you're not living in a lawless unimproved place like Ethiopia or Somalia.
so have a nice cup of stfu and get over yourself
