Career tip to would be copper thieves: Invest in a $40 power meter from Home Depot. CuLater.

Is it still stealing if its "abandoned"?

Copper is like what $3.50/pound at the most? These people are criminally STUPID ... for about 1/10th the energy they use scouting, obtaining, and scrapping copper, I could make 10x as much as they do.

How about "Don't ever try to get the copper from transformers. Ever."? People fail to realize that 'Electrical Insulator' != 'Won't conduct electricity". With enough volts, you can overcome the resistance of any material, and with enough amps behind said volts, it will kill you. Here's (NSFW!) what happens if you fark around with a live transformer. Needless to say, unless you want to die in a painful, gruesome, shameful, ball of flames, you don't fark around with live transformers. It's not worth the copper inside. Hell, if they made the transformer with pure gold, it still wouldn't be worth it.

I love it when thieves die violent and horrible deaths.

Darwin made solid contact.

That big ol' building was the textile mill
It fed our kids and it paid our bills
But they turned us out and they closed the doors
We can't make it here anymore

The Darwin Awards (dying before you can pass on your stupidity via children) are for the most part a young man's game, would need some confirmation this 46 year old didn't breed before being officially eligible.

How can it be a Darwin award when we don't know if he has reproduced?

Pe-what-ic?

I see someone is up on the current events...

Here in Flint, Michigan, they've been going into substations to steal copper. At a closed GM plant, they tried to steal the copper bus duct that handles 1500 amps at 480 volts while the power was still on.
Darwin is alive & well in Flint.

Yup, dead copper thieves are a good thing.

the opposite of charity is justice: The Darwin Awards (dying before you can pass on your stupidity via children) are for the most part a young man's game, would need some confirmation this 46 year old didn't breed before being officially eligible.

You can win a Darwin despite having reproduced. However, you can't win a Darwin for dying stealing copper--too many have done so.

There's still power going to the old mill? Smithers, to the main switches!

(Once again, Simpsons did it.)

.....thankfully nothing of value was lost that day. And all the copper was accounted for.

The end.

Yeah, I don't get it either. If you're going to steal something, steal something that's worth maybe getting killed for. If your big payday is a few hundred bucks you're doing it wrong.

Meth. Is there anything it cannot do?

Thieves and other criminals, particularly ones hopped up on meth and drugs, aren't all that smart or rational.

Griffin is full of these old mills (my hometown). Griffin and Thomaston used to have a large textile presence and then all the work went to China. They've tried renovating some of the mills for apartments and such but it hasn't worked out, especially since most of them are in not-so-nice parts of town. I'd love to own one and have a nice area built inside with a garage and shop (and maybe a micro-brew setup), but they just want too much money.
