Some Indian tribes aren't stopping at running casinos; they're also dabbling in loan sharking. Soon to be followed by hijacking Lufthansa cargo, being chased by helicopters while running guns and cooking veal cutlets

360% APR? Sure it's usury, but it's far from the record. I've heard of payday loans with a 4000% APR. Fun fact: Payday loans are illegal in many states, yet most online lenders will still grant them.

Richie loved to use 22s because the bullets are small and they don't come out the other end like a 45, see, a 45 will blow a barn door out the back of your head and there's a lot of dry cleaning involved, but a 22 will just rattle around like Pac-Man until you're dead.

My ex-wife, who always blamed ME for the money problems we had recently called me to look online for a few of these joints that you can apply online and just fax them paperwork.
I tried to talk her out of it, for more than a half hour. Told her we'd float her some cash, enough to get by on and she wouldn't do it.
So she took out a MASSIVE loan. And the payments on it are insane.

The thing with loan sharks, is the same with credit cards.... people never pay the full balance when it's due. They are content to just make the minimum required payments, and 'float' it month to month

Exactly. They're predatory. You need $300 so they don't take your car? Ok here. Next pay day just pay us back $500. Oh that leaves you a little short? No worries, we can loan you another $300.
You can say it's just business, and I suppose as far as the law goes it is (except where they aren't legal and do it anyway), but it's certainly not a practice I'd see outlawed entirely. Nobody has ever been `helped' by payday loans.

Don't people understand the damned nature of a loan anymore? The only times you take a loan out is:
a. Don't have the capital for an investment that you're reasonably sure will measurably benefit you enough to be worth the money+interest.
b. Unexpected emergency expenses, often medical in nature
You don't take loans out "Just cuz", I will never understand that line of thought. If the reason is purely hedonist in nature, then it's almost always stupid. No, you shouldn't get "that thing you want" unless you can buy it right out, or, if available, are sure you can pay back within the 0% APR rate time frame. Lenders are NEVER your friends.

I hate casinos. I really do. The stink of desperation and corruption permeate them. Its seriously farking evil. I went to one with a couple of friends several years ago, an "Indian" casino, really run by Bally's or whoever managed to include themselves in the contract to actually run the place and make all the profit. At any rate, my absolute, total disgust was set in stone when the second largest neon sign inside the place, was on the windows to a room adjacent to the casino, advertising "instant second mortgages" on your home or other property for instant cash. Up to $100,000. It was open 24 hours a day.
I was totally blown away at the sheer audacity of that. No wonder people are broke. I have no sympathy whatsoever for junkies, especially gambling junkies.

Someone in that situation is also the same demographic likely to be short next pay cycle paying it back. It's easy for someone on the fringes to get caught up in a never ending cycle of loans, and that's exactly what they count on. Eventually they give up trying to repay it but by then the lender has already made numerous times the original loan amount in profit. It's a dirty game exclusively targeting the poorest of the poor.

True. But many of them do. One of my friends is like that. He's at the mall on payday looking to blow his check on the first thing he sees, while the bills are piling up.
But when the collection agency calls, it's never HIS fault.

Mmmmm Veal Cutlets -
Ingredients:
* 1 pound veal cutlets
* 1/3 cup flour
* 3/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 3 tablespoons butter
* 1 tablespoon olive oil
* 1 clove garlic, finely minced
* 3/4 cup white wine, dry, such as Chardonnay
* Juice of 1 lemon, about 2 to 3 tablespoons
* 2 tablespoons capers, rinsed and drained
* Chopped parsley, for garnish
* Lemon wedges, optional
Preparation:
Put veal cutlets between sheets of plastic wrap and pound gently to about 1/8-inch thickness. combine the flour, salt, and pepper; dip cutlets into the mixture, coating both sides.
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute the veal cutlets for about 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until browned. Remove veal to a plate and set aside. Saute the garlic for about 1 minute, stirring. Add the wine and lemon juice; simmer for about 5 minutes to reduce slightly. Add the veal back to the skillet with capers; cover and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes. Serve veal cutlets with parsley and lemon wedges, if desired.
Serves 4.

Well payday loans are always a scam, student loans are only often a scam. There are circumstances under which a student loan may be favorable, though 18 year olds don't have a firm grasp on that and can make poor decisions. At least payday loans can be discharged in bankruptcy though, or just flat out never paid back with little consequence.

I think one of these places or something like it was being used by my ex GF. I got a call one day looking for her. Told them this was my cell and I havent heard from her in years they sounded pissed and started asking me how they would get their money back. After I laughed I told them how they probably screwed them worse than she screwed me. They were not amused. I did tell tehm to never call me again or we could get the states AG office involved in the matter.

you mean to tell me there are ignorant and desperate people out there willing to sign up to crazy loans?
I find the greatest amusement in the fact these people have never connected the events in their mind that the reason they can't get normal credit is because they've already defaulted on their bills. Pro Tip: rims and the new new of Jordans aren't "necessities".
Bigger picture time -- when you raise an entire generation in an environment of entitlement and getting stuff for free... why would anyone be shocked that they can't differentiate between normal and predatory lending?

I do, but by now I think we see what happens when mortgage lenders grant oversized loans to people who shouldn't get them, sometimes fudging the numbers to do so. And really, I'd rather get in over my head at one of these payday loan places than to get stuck with a mortgage I can't pay for a house that isn't worth what I owe on it. We got the outrage all proper over these mortgages, but did very little in the way of regulating them or doing away with the intervention that encourages and rewards such nonsense.
My point is I see our distaste for these establishments as some serious collective hypocrisy.
