Earth shattering. Did the earth just shatter? It should. Because metal back!

2011-12-28 06:20:03 AM
So this year I broke down and bought a macbook air, to see what all the osx fuss was about.

So far I have discovered it doesn't do WEP very well, and I still can't print to my network printer.

It doesn't "just work". I've spent more time scratching my head with this thing than with any windows / linux box I've built from scratch. Maybe just a learning curve...

WTF?! That's a common accessory in Hong Kong and plenty of stock at Amazon (new window).

You do realise that a cover is different to the unit proper having a metallic back, which is what the rumour-masquerading-as-news-article is positing, don't you?

Do you need my mailing address?
Also, who still uses WEP? Might as well not bother.

Its certainly possible that a place he might frequent (coffee house, school, etc) might offer a WEP secured connection.

When I went to an iPod Touch 4G, I had to upgrade my otherwise reliable
Netgear WGR614v6 to an N150 (not a biggie really since it was on sale at
the time), but the wifi on the iDevices seems to be rather problematic with
certain routers regardless of whatever security you use.

This would actually be a big improvement over the glass back (seriously, what kind of idiot makes a small, highly-droppable item with a glass back?), but I don't know if it'll actually happen. For all Apple's vaunted "design" skill, practicality is rather far down their list of priorities.

Verizon, for one. All their FiOS routers (at least the ones I've seen) have WEP
enabled by default.

You can change it, but 99% of people don't know to.

Carrying on with the threadjack.

I broke down and converted as well. As a Windows user going back to 3.1 I'm still working on getting to know the ins and outs of the OS, which I find to be a bit more challenging when you want to do anything other than simple tasks. So far I'm chalking this up to the learning curve as well. I did get a laugh over the fact that I had to go into the console to allow viewing of hidden files though. I'm putting Windows 7 Ultimate on this machine today but that's more for the occasional gaming session so I'm not giving up on Lion.

I will register my one complaint/annoyance so far, and that is the keyboard shortcuts. It seems totally random that some shortcuts use the apple key, others use the option key, and yet others use the control key. I suppose I'll get used to it but damn it's tricky to remember after just a few days.

My favorite so far has to be the touchpad gestures. Simple and intuitive, just like Macs are supposed to be.

Did you connect it to an apple router, apple printer, using apple ethernet/usb cables, while eating applesauce from an approved apple bowl and using apple approved utensils?

Seriously if the hipsters want to get on the new trend why haven't they switched to the unpopular devices.. Blackberry (because it is retro) or WinMo because it is obscure?

As for a metal backed iPhone... meh. They will do that add some feature that has been on the market for 2 years and call it revolutionary. A

Despite the product name on the amazon link, that's a metal back replacement and not a cover. It replaces the glass backing.

I wonder if it's worth pointing out that the iphone 4S got a new CPU, new graphics chip, and new software. The iphone 4 was the last time they upgraded the screen, though.

Obviously there are plenty of obnoxious Apple fanboys, but if you're going to take shots, at least do it for the right reasons.

/Still using iphone 3G because none of the upgrades are worth $200 / a new contract to me.

My biggest complaint about the Iphone is the bullshiat, mandatory $15/month PER LINE charged by AT&T. My mom got me and two of my kids Iphones for Xmas. I just got the first months bill. $322!!!

It is a pretty cool device, though.

/never thought I'd get a fruit device, ever.

This. I had a smartphone before the mandatory data plan. I put everything I wanted on it from the PC. Now, with wifi capable phones, why is this still mandatory? I'll connect from my hot spot. I don't need to be online all the time.

John Nash: I did get a laugh over the fact that I had to go into the console to allow viewing of hidden files tho

That used to be a Finder preference, as recently as Snow Leopard. I haven't looked for it since upgrading to Lion, because on the rare occasions I actually want to do something with hidden files, I'm probably using ls -a anyway.

John Nash: It seems totally random that some shortcuts use the apple key, others use the option key, and yet others use the control key.

I have to wonder what apps you're using. CMD is always the primary key for keyboard shortcuts. ALT is about bringing up extra options (alt+keystroke usually inserts a special character), and CTRL is usually a modifier on a keyboard shortcut using CMD (CMD+CTRL+key). Now a lot of XWindows apps won't follow that convention, but then they'll usually use CTRL.

John Nash: My favorite so far has to be the touchpad gestures. Simple and intuitive, just like Macs are supposed to be.

Best feature of Lion. I like the natural scrolling so much that I had to install a utility on my work computer to invert the mousewheel.
