50 eh? Wasn't that like, all of them?

Goddammit so much for inline'ing every HD youtube trailer for each movie.

2011-12-27 11:26:25 PM
I haven't even heard of 50% 60% 70% 80% 90% of these.

/yeah I know, doesn't mean they're not the "best"

2011-12-27 11:28:09 PM
Either this list is trying hard to be obscure or I need to get out more. Or I suppose it could be both.

2011-12-27 11:42:43 PM
Read enough to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes was on it... All I needed to know. "Best" might have been inaccurate.

I haven't seen any of em. Looks like we're gonna have to have a movie weekend. Second Earth, Hugo and Tree of Life look good.

W. T. Fark: /yeah I know, doesn't mean they're not the "best"

Actually it might.

I mean rotten tomatoes has a ton of incestuous documentaries about making movies that the critics eat up like candy. But they actually usually aren't very good unless you are currently IN that industry. And action movies are usually made bad on purpose.

I mean watch Drive Angry. It's a steaming pile compared to Casablanca. But it's actually a good action movie in that it fills all the requirements of an action film and does so very well. Some of the non-Cage quips are to die for. It's a horrible movie that's actually one of the best (because it's being horrible on purpose)

But claiming there's 50 best movies in a year? That's crap. There's one or one per genre. And there's only like 5 real genres.

I REALLY want to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. I have heard great things about that movie. Not to mention the cast list is amazing.

Tree of Life

I did not care for it. It was one of those "non story" vingette pictures. Just a bunch of little well done pieces that added up to nothing. Like making a jigsaw puzzle out of pieces from many puzzles cut to fit rather than set to make one unified picture.

31. Cave of Forgotten Dreams
3-D skeptics might have to rethink their stance after witnessing Werner Herzog's stunning tour of the oldest cave drawings ever found.

I'm still a skeptic, but it was absolutely the best use of 3-D I've seen yet.

2011-12-28 12:05:06 AM
29. Young Adult
Theron proved in her Oscar-winning role in Monster that she can play as ugly as she is beautiful, and here she demonstrates that transformation, for Mavis is a hot mess when she's not trying to woo Buddy, and the day-long prep it takes to get from before to after entails grody pedicures, faux hairpieces and tone-deaf outfits. (She wears a little black dress to a franchise sports bar.) Mavis is sexy and clever but also oblivious and cruel, and Theron embraces all of it, shoving her inevitable awkward humiliation at us. We can't turn away, and as a result, finally, we see her.-Annlee Ellingson

That's gibberish. Young Adult was not very good.

The Tree of Life was number one? Really?

I know some people really like Malick, but really?

Haven't seen it, but I quite liked the 3D in Avatar.

I would also like to see War Horse, but that's mostly because I'm a sucker for epic war movies with sweeping scenery and a John Williams soundtrack to tell me how to feel. I don't know whether I can drag her to a war movie though so I might have to see it alone.

I'm not the sort of person to get all flowery defending movies, so I'll put it this way: If you like 2001: A Space Odyssey, then The Tree of Life is arguably the second-greatest movie ever made. If you do not like 2001, well... I'm sorry.

It's definitely not a movie where your brain is supposed to shut off.

I like 2001, but I certainly don't think it's the greatest movie ever made.

I really loved Hugo. Saw it in 3-D, too.
A beautiful film.

I'd love to see the rest of the films on this list as well. Some of them I have seen and enjoyed (The Tree of Life, Another Year, Bridesmaids, etc.) But so many I haven't.

Certainly not, but it is one of the most unusual.

Goddammit, I just watched a soundtrack compilation of Atonement clips on Youtube. That last imaginary "what could've been" scene always has me bawling. Sonofa--

Thanks for the tip. I like mostly anything to do with outer space and futuristic movies so I'll have to check it out, even though I've never heard of it. 2001 was pretty cool, but the deal with the monkeys seemed out of place to say the least. Oh, and the light show at the end was neat looking, but I was like Wtf?

make me some tea: Certainly not, but it is one of the most unusual.

Oh, that's for sure. I like talking about the film, but it's sort of like LOST, where the show itself was occasionally fantastic and often entertaining, but sometimes it was more fun to talk about the themes and meaning of the show than it was to actually watch. That's sort of how I feel about 2001.

I like to watch stuff that stimulates the mind. 2001 is definitely one of them.

Indeed. I have not seen a single one of those movies, and I perhaps heard of maybe 5 of them. :-/

No way, brahski. Movies about outer space are like pizza. Some are better than others, but they're all good.

Oh well, at least my personal favorite movie of the year (13 assassins) made the list.

Seriously though, I'm a movie nerd and I'd only heard of about half of those, and seen maybe a quarter. The writer was clearly trying to go as obscure as possible.

No Bob, there was actually 52 movies made, but 2 of them went straight to video.

The Tree of Life is not about outer space but has some of the best astrophysics porn I've seen. The dinosaur shots.... not so much. But it really has its beautiful moments. I'd say it's a pretty sad movie overall.

You know, for a list loaded with indie movies,

HOW THE FARK DO YOU FORGET 'MARGIN CALL'?

/Best Wall Street movie I have ever seen. Ever.

2011-12-28 07:19:30 AM
As others have said, nothing I've seen, and very few I've even heard of.

Not that I see more than 1 or 2 per year in the theaters, but none seem like the type of movies I'd even like much.

Haven't seen Dragon Tattoo or Tintin yet but here's my top 10

The Eagle
Rango
Attack the Block
Warrior
Super 8
Hugo
Muppets
Mission: Impossible 4
Captain America
Drive, best I've seen this year

On any given day I never know which FARK I'm going to get in the Entertainment tab. Apparently today is the movie equivalent of the "I don't even own a TV" day.

Well, when the link seems to be the movie version of 'today on Masterpiece Theatre', you're going to get a lot a 'WTF is this?' comments.

Caught it Sunday and really enjoyed it. Casting was excellent and they stayed very true to the book.

"Goddammit so much for inline'ing every HD youtube trailer for each movie."

Agreed. Just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should. I think a better route would've been a text link to the preview on YouTube

It's very rare that I get excited about seeing a new movie anymore. There were more good movies being made a few years ago, IMO.

Agreed. That movie sucked harder than I'd thought possible. Then I saw Rampart and realized this style apparently passed for good.

That was an Artsy-Fartsy list, with an emphasis on the Fartsy.

2011-12-28 08:23:48 AM
It was run on a disappointingly low number of screens, but anyone who has the chance should get out and see Martha Marcy May Marlene. Elizabeth Olsen's performance is haunting, if for no other reason than seeing genuine talent come out of that family. If she keeps it up, there could easily be an Oscar in her future

2011-12-28 08:26:53 AM
The difference between 2001 and Tree of Life is that I actually gave a damn about what happened to the characters in 2001.

Another remake. You might check your local library for the Obi Wan Kenobi mini-series.

I didn't like "Attack The Block" because the characters were punks, I was actually rooting for the aliens to kill them.

I wouldn't call it the best movie of 2011 but it definitely had the best soundtrack.

robsul82: Drive - numero uno.

I feel like I'm the only man on earth who doesn't think that was a great movie. Didn't anybody else walk out of the theater thinking "Well... what was THERE was good, but where the hell was the rest of it?" I mean, it was artsy and I liked it and I can't say anything bad about the casting or performances or the soundtrack or the direction... but it just felt like there were huge gaps in the narrative. It was 100 minutes long, felt like 80, and seemed like it needed another 30 minutes to tell what happened between the scenes we saw.

To be clear, I have no problem with the [VERY MINOR SPOILER] ambiguous ending [/SPOILER], it was the entire narrative of the movie that felt half-done. Pretty much the entire 2nd and 3rd acts seemed like they were coming out of nowhere (and the first act seemed to set up an entirely different plot).
