Like Rhode Island was going to be won by a Republican anyway...

2011-12-27 10:12:54 PM
And no one really cares what Rhode Island does with their 3/5 of an electoral vote.

2011-12-27 10:25:20 PM
"Your state doesn't matter anyway, so we aren't going to even bother setting up an organization there."
"Then we won't put you on the primary ballots."
"Whaaaaaat?! This is an OUTRAGE! You can't do this to Democracy!"

2011-12-27 10:36:21 PM
Obama's thugs are at it again!

2011-12-27 10:36:34 PM
But the law also forces candidates to declare by January 19, giving them just two weeks to secure 1,000 valid signatures on their nomination papers to earn a spot on the ballot.

I didn't know it was January 5 of next year already!

2011-12-27 11:22:40 PM
Come on guys!!! It's not that freakin' hard. You get an intern, review the rules and obtain the required signatures from your party loyalists. There are at least 1000 die hard republicans in the goddamned state. Stop trying out crazy each other and run your damn campaign as if yuo mean it. Sheesh!

2011-12-27 11:23:03 PM
Yeah, that does suck! Signing a law this late in the year that really screws the Republican candidates. I agree. This law does need to be reviewed!

The purpose of the legislation signed into law last spring

...

Are you farking kidding me?

2011-12-27 11:31:33 PM
So, what I'm hearing is that the Mittster and Mr. States' Rights (To Oppress You) will be the only two guys on RI's ballot as well. Fantastic!

2011-12-27 11:38:18 PM
Stupid is as stupid does.

2011-12-27 11:38:29 PM
Is there any Republican candidate who isn't taking a dive?

2011-12-27 11:47:01 PM
So, instead of organizing efforts to meet the state's standard, they're all whinin about it being soooooo haaaaaard. Isn't this supposed to be the Party of Personal Responsibility? They'll have 14 days to obtain and submit 1000 valid signatures. That's rather less than 100/day. Shouldn't their networks of bootstrappy supporters and entrepeneurial donors be able to pull this effort together?

Are these people that desperate to demonstrate their inability to run a 7-11, never mind a campaign for one of the most powerful, most difficult jobs on Earth?

2011-12-27 11:48:23 PM
stoli n coke: Is there any Republican candidate who isn't taking a dive?

Mitt Romney wants to be President so badly it's just terrifying. No man should hold that office who wants it so damn much. I remember a few candid speeches by Obama where he explained how he knew he was getting a crap economy and a War in Iraq that he didn't want. He stated that it would be hard and he was going to get knocked down. He wanted the office, but he at least knew it was going to have some really crappy days.

Mitt sounds like a rich guy blinded by delusions of grandeur. He really thinks that just by being President he can make everything all better. He's in it to win it and he has the best change on the GOP side. He's organized and well funded. The debates should be fun, but it'll be a toss-up. He's got that "I'm wealthy, white and have a large family. Of course you're going to vote for me!" thing that will get some independents.

It's always been Mitt. Everything else has been a puppet show.

2011-12-27 11:48:40 PM
For the 2008 primary Mr. McCain garnered 17,468 votes.

So the current crop of candidates must see very appealing.

2011-12-27 11:49:19 PM
seem, not see.

FTFM

2011-12-27 11:49:42 PM
Isn't there something like 1M people in Providence? Have reasonably attractive women walk down the street with a clipboard collecting signatures. Each candidate should be able to get to 1000 pretty quickly that way.

Providence College and Brown University must have Campus Republican organizations.

Truly, if a candidate can't get 1000 signatures they probably shouldn't be running in the first place. Hell I bet the Campus Democrat organizations would quickly fill up 1000 signatures for guys like Paul and Huntsmann just to troll the Republican party and would sign for the loony fringe (Michele Bachmann) just to give them the chance to embarrass the Republican Party and increase Obama's chances for re-election.

devioustrevor: Truly, if a candidate can't get 1000 signatures they probably shouldn't be running in the first place.

25k+ Rhode Islanders voted in the last GOP presidential primary.

2011-12-27 11:55:51 PM
Just go to Newport...I'm sure all the folks with the yachts sporting helipads would have no problem supporting the republican party.

2011-12-28 12:01:54 AM
Does the population of RI have some weirdly fervent opposition to signing things or something? It blows my mind that anyone could have trouble getting a thousand signatures for anything. Someone could probably make up a totally nonsensical document and get 1k signatures by Sunday just by going to the mall and a couple of bars.

2011-12-28 12:03:04 AM
Oh, please. A candidate for a university student government office can pull that many sigs in a matter of dies. RI is small, but it's not that small. Two weeks is plenty of time.

2011-12-28 12:03:39 AM
Matter of days, rather.

This, by the way, is how they do it.

any group worth it's salt should be able to get 1000 signatures in one day.

It's how the LaRouchers try to do it at Metro stations in Maryland. But even with the hotties the crazy oozes through.

I would go on about how the Republican base must be outraged, but I suppose there's nobody on AM radio is has told them that yet.

2011-12-28 12:26:48 AM
If Obama can do one thing very well, it's run an organized campaign.

Obama's gonna drink their milkshake.

Guntram Shatterhand: I would go on about how the Republican base must be outraged, but I suppose there's nobody on AM radio is has told them that yet.

They're still working out how to blame "urban types", "illegals", and Taxbama for this cockup. It's almost as funny as Rick "Fed Up" Perry begging a federal court to override VA's election law and force them to place him on the primary ballot.

2011-12-28 12:30:17 AM
So wait, the LP will be on more ballots than the GOP? And I thought 2008 was the epitome of schadenfreude.

That is, they're TOTALLY screwed.

/should have spent more time getting their own arses on the ballot than preventing people from getting the damn things

Are these candidates that incompetent to get 1000 votes?

Obama was picking up minimums no problem in states that hate him.

2011-12-28 12:57:49 AM
Don't you love Republicans on this issue:

GOP: We need to make laws on voting strict as possible so no one can game the system. If you are crying about people being disfranchised you hate America. All votes need to be 100% verified with ID's, citizenship and legality to vote at that polling station!

After GOP candidates affected: OMG these rules are horrible it's worse than Pearl Harbor!!! Why can't our people just automatically get on ballots? Why do you have to verify signatures and make sure they are register voters. THIS SYSTEM IS SO UNFAIR!!!

2011-12-28 12:57:58 AM
It's as if they were more interested in publicity than running for office!

2011-12-28 12:59:49 AM
Guntram Shatterhand: I would go on about how the Republican base must be outraged, but I suppose there's nobody on AM radio is has told them that yet heard of Rhode Island.

/Fixed that is has too. No charge.

I like Rhode Island. Lived in Providence for two years while in college. (Not Brown ... one of the other two) I'd happily live there again if I could get a job there (or in Boston, a short train ride away). It's one of the nicest cities I've been in.

Fun fact! At an intersection, the street facing uphill has right-of-way -- recognizing that you couldn't stop on ice-covered roads.

2011-12-28 01:04:34 AM
Under the VA law, you can't write-in a candidate, so ONLY Romney or Paul could get votes.
I wonder if that same law is in effect in RI. If it is and no one is able to get on the ballot as the article suggests, could the state just cancel the primary and not spend any money on it - it'd be a clear case of fraud, waste, or abuse.

But seriously, 1000 signatures for the entire farking state? Pick an at least semi-attractive woman who's willing to be the only female standing in front of a Walmart in January wearing a low cut top. If she can't find enough men willing to sign a petition I'd be farking amazed. Hell, just go to the state colleges' chapter of Balls and Shaft and you'll get at least a few dozen.

Are you from somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon or something?

Huh, you actually are.

StopLurkListen: Fun fact! At an intersection, the street facing uphill has right-of-way -- recognizing that you couldn't stop on ice-covered roads.

You RISD types, always believing urban legends. Intersections at the top of hills work just like any other in RI--the most aggressive driver gets to go first.

2011-12-28 01:26:22 AM
I'm willing to concede that this is something that the candidates have a right to complain about. Mostly because it was fairly recent, unlike Virginia, so it wasn't something they could really plan for. THAT SAID, you should really be able to find 1000 people to sign a petition to put you on the ballot, and you still have over 20 days. It's difficult (you have to find volunteers or hire people, which takes time, then send them out and hope for the best) but it's not impossible.

On a related note: does anyone know if they allow write ins on the ballots?

2011-12-28 01:30:45 AM
Are there even 1000 people in RI?

It's 55 degrees in Rhode Island right now. At 1:30 AM. Any good New England girl wearing a low top right now isn't worried about frostbite, heck even the southern girls up for college will be able to make do with a nice sweater.

Local GOP leaders are warning that changes made to local ballot laws last spring could result in no Republican Presidential candidate ending up on the primary ballot in April.

Since 2010, the GOP has so hysterical about voter fraud that they couldn't change the voting laws fast enough. Talk about a circular firing squad.

Bucky Katt: Since 2010, the GOP has so hysterical about voter fraud that they couldn't change the voting laws fast enough. Talk about a circular firing squad.

Yeah, that veto-proof Democrat control of the R.I. legislature totally makes that "circular" bit super-accurate...ignoring, of course, that this has nothing to do with fraud in any way, shape, or form.

PlatinumDragon: So, instead of organizing efforts to meet the state's standard, they're all whinin about it being soooooo haaaaaard.

The same could be said about picture I.D.s for North Carolina voters.

Really poor candidates, in really poor parties have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works so they literally have -- they have no habit of showing up on Monday to collect signatures.
