This obviously means that Sarah Palin is now president

OK, so -- and I'm just wondering out loud here -- is it worse to 1) be rich and advocate a higher tax rate on oneself so that the entire society benefits, or to 2) be rich and adamantly oppose allowing another cent of your fortune to be spent on improving the entire society?

And while we're engaging in this mental exercise, could I get some of the Pelosi-haters here to tell me that rich people shouldn't spend money on themselves? I'd appreciate it if we could keep it general -- should rich people spend money on themselves, or should their money be used to benefit the entire society?

BTW, I spent last night in a $1000 a night suite. I paid $229, mind you. But the rack rate for the suite was a thousand bucks. Just something to think about.

Let me guess:

It's only bad for Democrats to be rich and spend money. But Republicans can have $500,000 lines of credit at Tiffany's, and that's all cool.

It's bad because only Democrats claim to represent regular people, while Republicans claim to represent only the rich.

Is that sort of how it's worse when a Republican is in a sex scandal because they are the `family values' party? Where a Democrat could just say "What? I'm FOR debauchery. I'm no hypocrite!"

Unless you are also gay, that makes you a hypocrite by Conservative logic. I believe in AGW/ACC but apparently I'm a hypocrite also because I use electricity.

Who are we kidding? Nancy Pelosi could vacation in Calcutta washing the feet of poor widows with AIDS and Republicans would still hate her.

That said, I'm sure she could have found a suitable place to stay for much less.

Plus, unless you have a copy of her bill, you have no idea what she is paying.

Did I mention that line of credit was a "special program" for "select customers", in which the usual 16% interest rate is waived. He had it for 18 months. While Mrs Gingrich was senior staff on a Congressional committee considering legislation that would have huge impacts inbTiffanys input costs.

$120,000 in interest fees waived. But that darn Pelosi, paying for an expensive hotel room, she's the problem!

You know what? I don't care if she, or any other representative for that matter, spends a million dollars per night in a suite, as long as that money was honestly earned, and as long as they advocate for working people in their public careers.

The point Republican voters seem to miss is that the OWS movement (because, let's face it, that's the subtext here) is not opposed to people having a whole lot of money or spending that money in a not-so-thrifty way. It's about the horrendously disproportionate overall distribution of wealth in our society. You have a million trillion brazillion bucks? Awesome. Good for you. Are you hoarding that million trillion brazillion bucks while millions of other people go without basic services, like healthcare? No? Then super.

Yes? Then we have a problem.

BravadoGT: And the flood of apologists for Democrat displays of obscene wealth begins...

Um.

So your argument is:

1) Democratic politicians hand people money to get elected.
2) Democratic politicians then inject their money back into the economy, but this is not good because they stole it from Republican voters.
3) Somehow, this is all a plantation and Lincoln was a Conservative.

I'm just trying to get my facts straight. Please enlighten me.

If anything, you get double points for promoting policies that (at least to the short-sighted) will cost you money.

Obama himself has been there less than a week.

By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, December 27, 6:24 PM (new window)

The Obamas arrived at Hanauma Bay on Tuesday

The president has stayed largely out of the spotlight since arriving Friday evening in Hawaii, the state where he was born and mostly raised. He spent a low-key holiday with his family, attended Christmas church services and visited service members stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, near Honolulu.

What in holy hell is wrong with these people? How can they have so much hate for the Obamas? I mean, politics aside, they always seem like genuine, caring, friendly, down-to-earth people. Jesus christ, this kind of hate will destroy a person.

As long as she's not using her fortune to subvert democracy, I could care less what she spends money on Subby. It's not the rich, it's what they do to politics. If the only thing the rich did was buy expensive hotel rooms there wouldn't be an farking problem.

That would be awesome.

ahh, another one of those things that "rightists" have allegedly been "pushing for years" that you made up.

If you're rich, please, help poor people. Give all that you can. Stay in the cheaper rooms and maybe put a homeless family up for the weekend with the excess you save. Don't "advocate" for the poor when you're engaging in over the top consumption with many poor people right under your nose. You deserve to be mocked for that - even if the good lil pack mules will come a-runnin' to carry your water.

Sure is. But I don't think it will work. I think most poor people would sympathize with the statement I made above about individual wealth vs. overall proportion of wealth. The poor people who would disagree are just dyed-in-the-wool Teabagger types anyway.
