Japan's football world cup championship rounding out at #10 was classy.

I'm flabbergasted by the fact that Ohio State is ranked 6th in the poll while Miami, whose scandal was probably 100 times worse, isn't even mentioned. And I say this as a Miami fan and Ohio State hater.
In relation, I'm also surprised that tOSU didn't follow our example and just self-impose a bowl ban this year instead of letting the NCAA hand them one for next season. Is it really worth going to the Urban Meyer Wash-up Bowl next week when they would actually be good next year and could've gone to a more decent bowl game?

I'm kinda betting that a self imposed ban still wouldn't have worked.

Not an LSU fan, but how is a team overrated when they are the only one to finish the regular season undefeated?

Jim Tressel made himself an easy target for the media. They didn't really have one at Miami.

That's true. One of the central themes of the Nevin Shapiro scandal was that, despite his huge influence on the Miami AD, the head football coaches (Larry Coker and Randy Shannon) were apparently not involved with the wrongdoing. In fact, Shannon was well-known for trying to get players to stay the fark away from Shapiro and the two hated each others' guts.

It's tragic really. Looking at this pic, you see two good friends at the peak of their profession.
You'd never think years later this would happen. Both men were outstanding coaches.

It seems to me that Top Sports Stories should be only narratives directly related to the execution of game plans and the subsequent favorable outcome, if any.
In other words, a team that develops, adheres to and works hard to achieve a goal - and achieves it - THAT'S a sports story. That means Packers / Cardinals / Mavericks / Japanese women are the only sports stories in the list. Everything else is news stories involving coaches.

Not sure where you expect a women's soccer event to show up. #10 seems a little high to me. People thought about for a day. The day it happened.

Actually I do agree with LSU's ranking. Alabama, on the other hand, is overrated

said they were going to tack on a bowl ban regardless and next year's team won't be much better than 8-4 anyway so I don't think going to the 2013 Insight Bowl is any better than playing in the 2012 Gator Bowl. Meyer's impact won't really be felt till the 2013-2014 seasons anyway so all in all tOSU got about what they deserve.
Tha U on the other hand is going to get blasted pretty hard by the NCAA but it may take a while to sort out that entire mess before it really starts to get traction in the media. It's coming though. Too bad really since Coker tried to steer away from that cancer and Golden deserves a chance to clean up the program without inheriting such a mess.

A team that's now in the top 5/10 and a team that's still in the top 25?
