The chest pains is an emergency. The dead dad isn't.

What an awful christmas. I think that one wins the prize.

If you have a dead body that you can't easily get rid of but aren't too concerned about causing an uproar among your neighbors, you can typically put them outside during the winter season to stave off decomposition. The release of gases from the rotting process is what makes the stench so bad, so if you can get the body frozen or near freezing before putrefaction sets in, you're golden.

He's not dead, he's resting.

RexTalionis: The chest pains is an emergency. The dead dad isn't.

I guess the inference is that he WAS an emergency...two days ago. Sounds like a great but-for hypo for 1L's, right around Halloween. "Is the son actually or legally liable for his mom's chest pains due to his failure to call in dad's death?"

My grandpa stays on the recliner for days. I can't tell if he's dead or not.
This guy's actions are totally understandable... totally.

Maybe we should start having people going around with carts looking for people who have died during the night.

Man, this really brings back some memories.

Why did this make the news? This happens all the time, sadly. Crappy elder care by family members who are overwhelmed, or just see them as a means to a social security check, means they're nice, stiff and dead.

/The best ones are the ones that are in full rigor in the Nursing Home. You know, that are supposed to be checked every two hours?

I'm not sure you are obligated to do jack-shiat if someone is dead in your general vicinity.

Well, that really assumes facts not in evidence, doesn't it? There's nothing to tie the chest pains to the father's death - in fact, the mother might not even be aware of the dead father.

"The son, who is about 60, might have had a brain injury that affected his mental capacity, police said"
I think that this is the important fact missed here. This was a elderly couple looking after their 60ish son who couldn't live on his own (presumed) and this is, all to often, a reality in our culture. There is more to the story here subby. Sad, really.

He has been mostly dead all day, but I am sure true love will bring him back.

ibscure?

I'm not sure I agree. I think all we can do is go through his pockets and look for loose change.

Exactly. My guess is that the father died in the recliner without observed signs of distress. The son didn't see a dead body as an emergency and so he simply let it be.

He died on Christmas eve. Maybe the mother did not want to upset her mental handicapped son on Christmas? More in need of a sad tag subby.
